Chapter 52 The Heir Clause Revealed (Brynn POV)

The cold air of the North Woods hit my face like a physical blow, a sharp, pine-scented contrast to the sterile, blood-slicked floor of the infirmary. I didn't stop to breathe. I didn't stop to look back at the shattered glass of the window. My feet moved with a predatory grace I hadn't possessed an hour ago, the "Alpha Sickness" having forged my muscles into something leaner, harder, and terrifyingly fast.

The Mate Call was a physical cord, a golden frequency vibrating in my marrow, pulling me deeper into the mist. I found him near the Ravine the place where he’d promised me a head start. Jaxon was standing by a jagged outcropping of limestone, his Lead Hunter cloak heavy with rain, his gold eyes burning through the gloom.

"You're awake," he breathed, stepping toward me.

I stopped ten feet away, the Silver Rose thrumming in my bag. The violet light of my tracking rune cast long, rhythmic shadows against the wet bark of the trees. "Miller tried to harvest me, Jaxon. The Council wanted my marrow before your father could get his hands on it."

Jaxon flinched, his jaw tightening. "I knew they were closing in. That’s why I called. I had to break the connection to the staging area to reach you."

"Why?" I stepped closer, the rain lashing against my face. "Why did you call me back? To save me, or to make sure the 'investment' didn't get spoiled?"

The words were poison, but I couldn't stop them. The memory of the "Heir Clause" from the diary the one he’d admitted to knowing back in the dorms was a jagged shard in my chest.

"Brynn, don't," he whispered, reaching out.

I slapped his hand away. The contact sparked a violent, electric snap of shared power that made the air smell like ozone. "Tell me the rest of it. Not the parts about the debt or the land or the 'protection.' Tell me why your father is so calm about the fact that I’m running."

Jaxon looked away, his silhouette looking small against the vast, dark canopy of the woods. The silence stretched, filled only by the rhythmic drumming of the rain.

"The Heir Clause isn't just a legal loophole, Brynn," he said, his voice barely audible over the storm. "It’s a termination event. My father doesn't just want a hybrid. He wants the debt to end. He wants the Bloodrose line to be officially, legally absorbed into the Steelclaw dynasty."

"And how does it end, Jaxon?" I asked, my voice trembling. "What is the 'termination event'?"

Jaxon finally met my eyes, and the grief I saw there was so profound it almost made me stop. "The debt is considered paid in full the moment a Steelclaw heir is born from a Bloodrose mother. Not just any child. A male heir with the Command."

I felt the world tilt. "So... I’m not just a vessel. I’m a trade-in. I give him a grandson, and I get my 'freedom'?"

"He thinks that once you have the child, the bond will lock you into the pack," Jaxon said, stepping forward, his hands open in a plea. "He thinks the biology will do the work that the laws couldn't."

A horrible, cold realization began to dawn on me. I looked at Jaxon at the man who had stabilized my soul, who had kissed my forehead, who had sat with me in the cafeteria. "The mate bond. It’s not a miracle, is it? It’s not 'fate.'"

"Brynn, please"

"It’s a genetic trap!" I screamed, the sound tearing through the woods. "Your ancestors and mine... they didn't just write a Treaty. They engineered a biological tracking system. They made sure that no matter how far a Rose ran, a Steelclaw would always feel the pull. It was never about love, Jaxon. It was about ensuring the hunters always had their prize. You were born to find me, and I was born to be found. We’re just two pieces of a machine designed to keep your father in power!"

"I love you!" Jaxon roared back, the gold in his eyes igniting with a desperate, tragic fire. "I didn't choose the bond, but I choose you. Every time I look at you, I’m fighting the script. Why do you think I gave you the map? Why do you think I risked my life in the conservatory?"

"Because you wanted to be the one to catch me!" I countered, the Bloodrose Command roaring in my throat. "Even now, you're standing here talking about 'choice' while your father’s marksmen are closing in. You're the Lead Hunter, Jaxon. You’re literally the man who is supposed to bring me to my knees to fulfill that clause."

I backed away, my heels hitting the edge of the ravine. The mist was thick here, a white void that threatened to swallow us both. The violet light on my arm was a frantic, pulsating strobe.

"The bond is a trap," I whispered, the rage turning into a hollow, aching betrayal. "And you’re just the bait."

"I am trying to break it," Jaxon said, his voice cracking. "The soul-link... it changed the frequency. It's not just their bond anymore, Brynn. It's ours. We can use it to find the gaps in the perimeter."

"I don't want your gaps," I said, reaching into my bag and feeling the cold, razor-edged petals of the Silver Rose. "And I don't want your 'freedom' if it costs me a son to your father’s house. My mother didn't poison her blood so I could become a broodmare for a tyrant."

"Brynn, wait "

"The hunt is on, Jaxon," I said, my eyes flashing a brilliant, sovereign violet. "And since you're the Lead Hunter, I suggest you start tracking. Because if I see you in these woods again, I won't be looking for a mate. I'll be looking for a target."

I didn't wait for his response. I turned and leaped into the darkness of the ravine, the wind catching my hair as I vanished into the mist. I left the man I loved standing in the rain, clutching at a bond that felt like a noose.

The "Heir Clause" was a death sentence, but not for me. My mother had poisoned the legacy, and I was going to finish the job. If the Steelclaws wanted an heir, they would have to find one in the ashes of their dynasty.
