Chapter 75: Picking Up Amelia for Work
"Shut your mouth!" Mabel's threatening words were cut short by Amelia's cold voice, her face dark with anger.
Before she got James, he absolutely couldn't find out about this.
"You just want money, right? Five hundred thousand dollars. I'll transfer it to your account right now. Take the money and get the hell out of Imperial City immediately. Mabel, don't say I didn't warn you—you better keep your mouth shut, or else—"
"Or else what? You're going to kill me?"
Mabel was angry too.
Still acting all high and mighty?
Threatening her?
Since they'd already fallen out and she had no plans to come back anyway, what could five hundred thousand dollars even do?
From Amelia's reaction just now, she was terrified of James finding out.
That was actually unexpected.
But either way, the more afraid Amelia was of being exposed, the better it was for her.
"Five hundred thousand dollars? What am I, a beggar?"
"Amelia, I want five million dollars. Not a dollar less, or I'll tell James everything you've done, and you can wait for him to come settle the score with you, one thing at a time!"
Mabel hung up right after saying that.
This was the first time Mabel, who had always been submissive in front of Amelia, had ever held her head high.
Mabel felt completely refreshed.
She never thought that in her lifetime, she'd be able to step on Amelia's head.
……
"Bitch!"
Hearing "five million dollars," Amelia was furious and threw her phone to vent her anger.
The car's interior was too small. The phone hit the partition and bounced back, landing right on her injured leg.
The pain made Amelia's face even more twisted.
The pain in her leg also reminded her of what she'd just been through.
She'd deliberately cut her own leg when James was helping her deal with those people who came looking for trouble.
First, to make him feel sorry for her. Second, with her leg injured and unable to move easily, James would naturally take her home.
Once she got him into her house, with her charm, just a little seduction would be enough. James, who loved her so deeply, would definitely lose control, throw Mia to the back of his mind, and become completely captivated by her.
Right when Mia was hit by the people Mabel arranged, lost the baby, and was fighting for her life in the hospital.
James would be in bed with her, lost in passion.
Mia would have only two outcomes: either die right there on the operating table, or if she was lucky enough to survive, she'd wish she was dead!
And after James had a taste of her, he'd definitely become even more obsessed with her.
Without the baby as leverage, Mia was destined to be defeated!
Being a perfectionist, for this perfect plan, she didn't hesitate to hurt herself, to mar her own perfection.
All for this perfect plan to succeed.
But it was all ruined by Mabel!
She hadn't even gone after her yet, and Mabel had the nerve to come threaten her!
Demanding five million dollars right off the bat.
What nerve.
If she wanted five million dollars, she'd better see if she had the life to spend it!
Amelia's nails dug into the leather seat, breaking through the surface, gripping tightly as if wringing Mabel's neck.
……
The black Bentley drove down the road. While driving, James glanced at Mia in the passenger seat.
Her cheeks were puffed out in anger, her face slightly turned toward the car window, refusing to look at him. Clearly still mad.
There was a red light ahead, and the car slowly stopped.
James suddenly raised his hand, his slender index finger gently poking her puffed cheeks.
The puffed cheeks deflated at his poke.
Mia was stunned. She didn't expect James to do something so childish. She turned to look at him in shock.
Meeting James's smiling eyes, her anger somehow disappeared. It really wasn't that big a deal anyway.
James reached out to pinch her face. She'd gained back some weight recently. He chuckled and asked, "Not mad anymore?"
Mia huffed proudly, "Who says I'm not mad? You're too domineering. Benjamin saved me and the baby. What's wrong with me going to see him?"
What right did he have to forbid it!
Earlier at the hospital, after the checkup confirmed the baby was fine, she wanted to go see Benjamin.
But James pulled her back and wouldn't let her go.
When she insisted, he just picked her up in a princess carry, carried her out of the hospital, and put her in the car.
"What's there to see?" James glanced at her, disliking that she was thinking about another man. "Didn't I tell you? He's fine."
Benjamin saved Mia, and he'd thank him in his own way.
Mia was speechless.
No getting through to him.
Mia just stopped talking. Tomorrow when he went to the office, she'd go see Benjamin herself.
……
The next morning, when Mia woke up, James was already gone from the bed.
This was the first time in over two weeks.
After James moved back to the master bedroom, her sleep quality had been good like before. The only difference was she no longer slept in.
Every day when James got up, she'd get up too, have breakfast with him, and see him off to work.
Yesterday her emotions had been all over the place, which was why she overslept.
She turned to check the time—almost 8 o'clock. James was about to leave.
Mia didn't bother washing up and just walked out in her pajamas.
Downstairs, James stood in the entrance hall. His phone rang.
He glanced at the caller ID. Amelia.
His hand touched the answer button and he picked up immediately.
He looked back at the stairs before putting the phone to his ear.
"James, have you left yet?" Amelia's gentle voice came through.
Her eyes were full of satisfaction at how quickly James answered.
"No."
James was brief, taking shoes from the shoe cabinet.
"Perfect timing then. Can you give me a ride to the office?"
James frowned slightly. "If your leg's injured, rest at home. You don't need to go to the office."
"I'm fine. It's just my leg that's hurt, not my brain. Will you come get me?"
James had just finished changing shoes when he heard footsteps behind him. He replied, "Okay."
He hung up, turned around, and pulled Mia, who was deliberately walking quietly to surprise him, into his arms.
His gaze fell on her composed face. As she complained about him not playing along, he held her chin and kissed her.
He kissed her until her cheeks were burning hot and she kept patting him. Only then did James let go. "I'm heading to the office."
"Okay!"
Mia kept shooing him away. So annoying! The servants could come out any moment, and he was still kissing her like that!
After James left, Mia stood alone in the entrance hall, covering her cheeks with both hands. It took a while for the heat to go down.
She smiled and called a servant to prepare breakfast, but her steps suddenly stopped.
'If your leg's injured, rest at home. You don't need to go to the office.'
'Do you know how much he cares about Amelia? He can't live without Amelia anymore. He arranged for Amelia to work at his company to be with him.'
It all added up!
So Amelia really was arranged to work at his company?
And he hadn't said anything!
The color drained from Mia's face bit by bit. Without even changing clothes, she grabbed the down jacket hanging in the entrance hall, put it on, opened the door, and rushed out after him.
