Chapter 199: Miss Me? I'll Come to You Tonight
"Amelia?"
Uri hadn't spoken in years. His voice was hoarse as he softly called out Amelia's name.
Amelia, who was buried against his chest, pinched herself hard on the inner thigh. Once tears successfully welled up in her eyes, she quickly lifted her head, her hand touching his gaunt, protruding cheekbones. Large tears rolled down her face as she choked out, "It's me, I'm Amelia."
"Uri, thank God, you're finally awake. All those years I spent watching over you weren't for nothing—"
Orla had just been pulled away by Amelia. Ignoring her bruised shin, she immediately rushed out to call the doctor, once again forgetting she could just press the call button by the bed.
After running to get the doctor, she couldn't wait for him to come back with her.
She ran back as fast as she could, but when she reached the hospital room door and heard Uri call out Amelia's name, she stopped abruptly.
She stood in the doorway, tears blurring her vision as she watched the tender scene between the two people just a few meters away. Enduring the heartache, she bit down hard on her lip.
She raised her hand to wipe away the tears covering her face.
It's okay.
As long as he's awake and can live well from now on, nothing else matters.
The doctor arrived shortly after and strode into the room.
He asked both of them to leave so he could give Uri a full examination.
Only then was Amelia forced to "reluctantly" get up and step outside the room with Orla.
The moment the door closed, Amelia's expression changed instantly.
Orla didn't notice Amelia. All her attention was on Uri. She stood at the door, looking through the glass into the room, both nervous and worried.
She had waited so long that even though his eyes were open, she was afraid he might fall back into unconsciousness again.
Orla's love for Uri was too obvious—it was written all over her face.
Amelia saw it and suddenly laughed coldly.
At her laugh, Orla's expression changed slightly.
She bit her trembling lip and slowly turned to look at Amelia's arrogant face.
Uri had called her name first when he woke up.
"Orla, what's Uri's status, and what's yours? Do you think you're worthy of wanting him?"
"I..."
Orla wanted to say she didn't.
But she couldn't get the words out.
"You better remember this—I'm Uri's fiancée and the woman he loves most. If I don't allow it, you'll never see him again for the rest of your life."
Orla's pupils dilated with shock.
Her eyes filled with panic as she reached out to grab Amelia, who dodged her with disgust.
Orla's eyes instantly turned red as she pleaded with Amelia. "Ms. Martinez, please don't send me away."
She couldn't leave. She had to stay and take care of him.
She couldn't trust anyone else to look after him.
She wasn't asking for anything else. She just wanted him to recover and be like he was before.
Amelia didn't respond immediately, just looked at Orla.
"Ms. Martinez, please, let me stay by Mr. Smith's side to care for him. As soon as he's better, I'll leave immediately. I promise I won't say anything!"
She knew what Amelia wanted.
Actually, her worry was unnecessary.
She knew her place and understood that even if she said something, it wouldn't mean anything.
She understood the coldness and ruthlessness in his bones.
It wasn't just that she wasn't good enough for him—he simply wouldn't be interested in her at all.
Before the accident, even when they were being intimate, he never really looked at her.
He looked through her at someone else, and he never hid it from her.
From the very first day their intimate relationship began, he told her bluntly: you smile like her.
She actually couldn't see how her smile resembled Amelia's.
But if he said it did, then it did.
Orla swallowed her bitterness.
"You better remember your words, or else—"
Amelia didn't finish her sentence, but it was full of threat.
Time passed minute by minute, and the examination inside finally finished.
When the door opened, before she could speak, she immediately sensed the gaze sweeping over from beside her. She stepped back, letting Amelia go forward.
She listened as Amelia asked anxiously, "Doctor, how is Uri?"
Orla didn't dare show too much, but her clenched fists gave her away.
"Although the patient has been lying here for four years, thanks to you massaging him day after day all these years, his muscles haven't atrophied."
"With proper care and treatment from now on, it won't be long before he can get out of bed and walk normally."
"Really?"
Amelia cried tears of joy and rushed to the bedside, gripping Uri's hand. "Uri, did you hear that? This is wonderful!"
Before long, she could return to Imperial City with Uri.
She would let James know that she was still the most dazzling woman in Imperial City!
There was nothing she wanted that she couldn't get!
Uri looked at the tearful Amelia and said with effort, "Amelia, have you been taking care of me all this time?"
"Yes!"
Amelia nodded emphatically.
"You've had it hard."
Amelia shook her head through her tears, threw herself into his arms and held him tight, choking out, "It wasn't hard. As long as you wake up, I'm willing to do anything!"
Uri, having just woken up, seemed too weak to hug her back and just let Amelia hold him.
As Amelia cried in his arms, he didn't look at her with heartache or comfort her. His gaze wasn't even on her.
Instead, he looked at Orla, who had seen the doctor out and was standing a few steps away from the bed.
Watching her clenched fists and trembling body, he said gently to Amelia in his arms, "Don't work so hard anymore. Let Orla do this kind of dirty, tiring work."
Hearing this, Orla quickly looked up.
How did he know she would?
Could it be...
Her eyes, red from crying, looked at Uri.
Seeing the coldness in his eyes, still without any warmth, she quickly lowered her head again.
Her heart felt like someone was squeezing it hard—it hurt so much she couldn't breathe.
What was she even hoping for?
He was just feeling sorry for Amelia.
...
Imperial City, the next day was the same.
Flowers in the morning, afternoon tea in the afternoon.
She refused the flowers, but the afternoon tea was "forced" on her by the secretaries in the secretarial department, who insisted it must be delivered.
Day five...
Every day brought different surprises. They were all things Mia liked, mixed with treats the other secretaries enjoyed.
In just five days, all the secretaries had switched sides to support this mysterious admirer.
As they ate, they asked her if this person spending so much money and effort pursuing her was her ex-husband.
Mia said she didn't know, but deep down she knew perfectly well.
She had been holding back since day one.
She knew that when he denied their relationship that day, he was upset.
So he was using this method to assert his claim.
But she thought he was just being childish and would stop after a day or two.
She didn't expect it to go on and on.
Day five was her limit.
While her colleagues in the secretarial department were eating desserts, Mia took her phone to the quiet stairwell and called James.
He answered almost instantly. "Miss me? I'll come see you tonight."
"James, what exactly do you think you're doing?"
Mia didn't respond to his comment but questioned him directly.
She had just warned him not to cross the line, and now he was practically making it known to everyone that she and James had a relationship.
"Mia, I'm pursuing you. Isn't that obvious?"
