Chapter 194
Chapter 194
Eve’s POV
"What...?" I turned my head and stared at Amy.
"Although I don't know the reason, I'm not stupid." Amy smiled. "If you were afraid that I would stop you, then why did you keep me?"
I covered my wound and my face gradually turned pale.
"Let me guess. You wanted me to give the other 'Underworld' members a message, making everyone think 'Eve's given up,' so you kept my life, right?"
"Underworld?" Lila and Clara looked at each other in bewilderment, completely oblivious to what she meant.
"You are indeed very smart." Amy nodded. "But you miscalculated one thing. That is, I don't care at all whether you will collect three thousand six hundred Holy Grails, and I won't stop you either."
My expression was extremely grim. I never expected that all my thoughts had been seen through by her.
"Although we are all members of the underworld, each of us has different pursuits." Amy took a rubber band from her wrist, tied up her loose hair. "Some people are keen on spoiling games, some like to destroy Holy Grails, and some pretend to be locals on the street, but I'm different."
"What's different about you?" I asked.
"I enjoy experiencing different games and watching people scheme against each other." Amy replied without any hesitation. "Although the 'extremists' are all a group of lunatics, con artists and gamblers, each of them is protecting this place with their own strength. And the way I protect this place is to incite those normal people to participate in games."
"So... are you a 'shill'?" I asked to the point.
"Shill...?" Amy thought for a while and nodded. "According to what you say... I'm really a shill, but no one gave me any money."
For a moment, I was at a loss for words. All I could do was keep pondering one question in my mind - what exactly was "the ultimate way"?
"So what about you?" Amy asked. "Are you really going to give up?"
"What do you think?"
I let go of the hand covering the wound and then showed Amy the bloodstain between my fingers. "Can you heal me?"
"I really can't do that." Amy shook her head. "I can't figure out the 'logical relationship' that would make you recover. Otherwise, I would definitely have saved you... after all, you just saved my life."
Seeing that the three of us were still looking at her warily, Amy no longer made fun of herself. She stretched, revealing her curves, then asked, "Are you going to kill me? If not, I'm leaving."
I was never a vicious person to begin with, so there was no reason for me to kill Amy. On second thought, I didn't even have a reason to keep her.
"Am I really leaving?" Amy confirmed again.
Seeing that I still didn't respond, she shook her head helplessly, causing a chime to ring in the distance.
Hearing this soul-stirring sound, I couldn't help but ask, "What exactly does the bell sound represent?"
Amy turned around, thought for a while. "Considering that you saved my life, I can make an exception to answer your question, but you also need to answer one question for me."
"Okay." I nodded.
Seeing that I agreed, Amy spoke up. "At present, it's known that there are only two situations for the bell to ring. The first is 'hearing the echo,' and the second is 'the echo disappearing.'"
"What is 'echo'?" I asked again.
"This is the second question." Amy shook her head. "Is our relationship really that good?"
I covered the wound, and my expression gradually darkened.
Amy seemed to feel a bit reluctant. "This time, I'll make an exception and answer you one more question. Here, 'echo' is a very abstract thing. Some people can never understand it throughout their lives, while others, even if they do understand it, still cannot use the power of 'echo'... I was very lucky today and successfully 'echoed' twice in a row. That's also the reason why you guys have survived until now."
Clara seemed to have thought of something. "Sure enough... the person I killed with glass was manipulated by you..."
"If your understanding still remains at the level of 'manipulation,' you may never understand 'echoes' in your entire life." Amy turned around and was about to leave. After taking three steps, she suddenly thought of something and stopped. "Eve, don't suppress your own sadness. People only hear the 'echo' when they are in extreme emotions."
With that, Amy pushed open the hotel door and walked onto the street.
"Hey, don't you have a question to ask me?" I shouted from afar.
"Just keep it for now." Amy didn't look back; she just waved her hand.
Her words left others confused, but I felt as if I'd caught some clue.
In my understanding, "Echo" seemed to be some kind of superpower.
This superpower would randomly appear in some people.
After all, this wasn't reality; it was a surreal world set up by "God."
At this moment, the huge clock would also ring, and the screen would prompt "I heard the echo."
In other words, every time the bell rang before, it meant that someone had obtained this superpower called "Echo," and the second bell rang, indicating that the user had hidden the superpower, or... the user lost his life.
"Murphy was an 'Echo'..." I muttered to myself.
"Murphy?" Lila and Clara looked at me at the same time.
"Before Murphy died, the first bell rang, and after his death, the second one." I tried to combine Murphy's strange actions at that time with this superpower. "This shows that he obtained this ability before his death, but his performance was very strange."
I took out the old metal lighter from my pocket and said to Lila and Clara, "He was like a magician at that time, taking out a cigarette from an empty cigarette box and a lighter from an empty pocket."
"What?" Clara looked at me puzzledly. "Weren't these two things you brought to him?"
"No." I shook my head. "At that time, I was afraid that you would focus too much on these issues, so I kept it a secret. But now that I think about it, he did obtain this superpower for a short period of time."
"So you mean..." Lila stretched out her hand and gestured. "This superpower called 'Echo'... can it make people conjure up things out of thin air?"
"No." I shook my head again. "If we understand Amy's words carefully and combine them with all that has happened before, we might as well make a bold assumption... this thing called 'Echo' is divided into many categories, and the abilities each person acquires are also different. Currently known ones include 'bringing disaster' and 'framing,' as well as Murphy's 'summoning objects from a distance.'"
Clara also nodded and chimed in at this moment. "That Amy's ability is also a bit different from Murphy's... it seems that she can control the 'logical relationship' of something..."
