CHAPTER 40

CHAPTER 40
DALTON

The shower water cascaded down our bodies. My back was pressed against the wall, while Blair had her head resting on my chest, held tightly in my arms. Our breaths remained uneven as if we had just run a marathon.

"This is too much, even for us," Blair said first.

"Why do you say that?" I murmured against her hair.

"Seven times in one night. That's too much for me," her tone and scent indicated that she was slightly upset.

"It's too much for me too. I just wanted to know what you meant," my fingers started wandering across her lower back, near the curve of her buttocks.

"You recover quickly, huh?" she asked playfully.

"You're married to an alpha, darling. What did you expect?" I gave her a playful smack on the behind, and she flinched slightly.

"I'm going to leave you," she said, looking into my eyes.

The world stopped at those words. It couldn't be possible that she had discovered about Elsa, it couldn't be. I couldn't let her see that I was hiding something. I tried to appear calm.

"What did you say?" I asked with a weak voice.

"I'm going to leave you, but I meant the shower. While you finish up, I'll check the mail and prepare some dinner," she stepped out of my arms, grabbed one of the towels, and disappeared from the bathroom.

I leaned my arms against the wall, letting the water flow down my neck. It was such a spontaneous moment that it almost made my heart stop. This was just a confirmation that I had to tell Blair everything. I couldn't continue living in fear of her discovering the truth at any moment. I had to tell her, and I had to find a way to do it.

BLAIR

I put on only a pair of panties and one of Dalton's shirts to go downstairs and prepare dinner. Our relationship was on the right track. I walked to the kitchen, took the envelopes from the table, and carried them with me.

As I walked, I left the envelopes on the kitchen island and headed to the nearly empty fridge. There was only some cooked rigatoni, a bit of meat, and a little cheese.

I can make a good pasta with this. I took everything out of the fridge and placed it on the island. I grabbed a pan, added a bit of oil, and put it on low heat so it wouldn't get too hot too quickly. I approached the envelopes that I had left on the island.

I went through each one, seeing bills, promotions, a book subscription... books? I guess they're Dalton's. Suddenly, I found a beige envelope with very elegant handwriting that said, "Mrs. Black."

I left the rest of the envelopes on the island, opened one of the drawers to grab a small knife, and used it as a letter opener to extract the contents, which turned out to be another card written with the same handwriting: "Mrs. Black, you are cordially invited to tea time on the afternoon of next Friday when you are supposed to be back in town. Greetings to your husband. We'll be waiting here. Katherine Le Blanc."

"Le Blanc," that surname sounds familiar, quite familiar. Katherine Le Blanc.

The distinct scent of Dalton invaded my nostrils, and I immediately knew he was coming downstairs. I felt his footsteps behind me and sensed the moment he entered the kitchen.

"Do you know someone named Katherine Le Blanc?" he asked, placing a hand on my hip.

"Yes, she's the mayor's widow," I said as he kissed me on the forehead and went straight to the coffee maker.

"She has sent me an invitation for tea," I said, looking at the card.

"Oh, that's just Katherine, she has a somewhat old-fashioned style," he said, making a disapproving gesture.

"What do you think she wants?" I approached the stove again and started placing the rigatoni in one of the pans.

"Maybe she found out that you're my wife and wants to meet you."

"Do they know about us?" I gestured with my hand referring to the two of us.

"Of course, in fact, in the past, the pack leadership used to be in charge of our species, but it was decided that a human family would be best for the position," he paused by my side.

"And do you think she simply wants to get to know us?" I grabbed a plate and handed it to him along with the cheese grater.

"I suppose so, my mother once told me that she had also been invited," he shrugged and passed me the cheese, which he had already grated. "Do you need help with anything else?"

"So, do they do this with every woman who takes on the Luna role in this pack?" I handed him the pan and gave him the rest of the pasta.

"Yes, I suppose so, as a way to get to know them better."

"Then I'll do that with my future daughter-in-law," I said, laughing.

Dalton burst into laughter as I handed him a jar of sauce to open. It was something strange because it was not that he couldn't open it, but it was a normal act of marriage.

After the night when Dalton and I prepared our dinner, I was nervous about our meeting with the mayor's wife. I had a lot of nerves, mainly because I was younger than Dalton, and other silly things that crossed my mind.

Now I was indecisive about what clothes to wear to meet her. I didn't want to look too formal or too informal. I pulled out a black pencil skirt from the closet and a white long-sleeved blouse with a boat neckline that exposed part of my shoulders and my entire collarbone. I also chose black high-heeled stiletto shoes.

The bathroom door opened, and steam came out, gradually revealing my very own Greek god, only wearing a towel wrapped around his waist, exposing that magnificent abdomen.

"What time do you have the appointment with Katherine?" he asked, leaning his hands on the bathroom door frame.

"Why do you ask?" I whispered.

"Because I'm seeing you in lingerie, and you're driving me crazy."

I glanced at the wall clock and saw that I had half an hour.

"I have thirty minutes. What can you do with that?" I smiled mischievously.
