CHAPTER 220. THE WEIGHT OF SIX MONTHS

CHAPTER 220. THE WEIGHT OF SIX MONTHS
CHAPTER 220. THE WEIGHT OF SIX MONTHS

The air thickened, dense with the unspoken aftermath of shared skin and whispered sighs. Five minutes of profound silence stretched, a heavy blanket draped over the alleyway, after the quiet rustle of clothes being donned had ceased. Gloria leaned back against the rough brick, her head resting on its cool surface, eyes drifting upward to the indifferent sky. Beside her, the fleeting companion of her recent surrender pulled out a lighter, its small flame momentarily illuminating the nascent cigarette before he brought it to his lips.

A tendril of smoke, acrid and unwelcome, snaked towards her. Instinctively, Gloria clamped a hand over her nose, a small, involuntary gesture that spoke volumes. The fellow noticed. His brow furrowed in a quick, apologetic frown.

"Oh, oh my God, I'm sorry," he murmured, the cigarette still smoldering between his fingers. "I didn't know you didn't smoke."

Gloria shook her head, waving a dismissive hand, the gesture more weary than emphatic. "No, it's fine," she managed, her voice a little hoarse. A small smile touched his lips, a flicker of understanding. Without a word, he snuffed out the lighter, then carefully dusted the tobacco from the cigarette before flicking it away, the forbidden act halted mid-puff. Gloria exhaled, a long, slow release of breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

He watched her for a few more minutes, his gaze surprisingly empathetic, before letting out a soft sigh. "I understand how you feel, okay?" he offered, his voice gentle.

She shook her head, a sharp, almost defiant movement. "No, you don't."

His smile softened, touched with a hint of melancholy wisdom. "No, I actually do. And I know that right now you feel guilty after engaging in this with me. You feel like... you know, that Tristan guy was meant for you, that he was the only one you were supposed to get entangled with." He paused, letting his words sink in. "But I need to let you know that you don't need to feel guilty about not blowing off steam. I mean, it's really been so long. You can't keep holding yourself back because of someone who might actually not care about you. If he actually really did, he would have looked for you."

Gloria scoffed, a bitter sound that escaped her lips before she could stop it. She shook her head again, a knot tightening in her stomach. "Don't just make conclusions if you don't know the entire story. My parents and my family made it impossible for him to look for me, so I don't really blame him." The words tumbled out, a defense she'd rehearsed a thousand times in the lonely chambers of her mind.

The man looked at her, his head nodding slowly, absorbing her confession. "But you can't really blame them, can you?" he countered gently. "You saw how the entire news shook the entire world. I would literally go and dig my own grave if that kind of scandal enveloped everywhere about me." He finished, his expression a comical mixture of horror and dramatic flair.

Gloria, who had been staring blankly ahead, slowly turned her head to look at him. The sheer absurdity of his declaration, the wide-eyed earnestness on his face, was so unexpectedly funny she couldn't help it. A burst of laughter escaped her, bubbling up from a place she hadn't known existed moments ago. He smiled, relieved by her unexpected mirth.

"Yeah, I'm actually saying the truth," he insisted, a chuckle rumbling in his chest. "I wonder how you went through that and you were still alive. You must really be a very strong woman."

She shook her head slowly, the laughter fading into a soft sigh. "Well, I just had to do what I had to do to go into hiding." The memory of those desperate, frantic days still clung to her, a phantom chill.

He exhaled, a long, drawn-out sound, and nodded slowly. "What is your name?" she asked, the question feeling oddly intimate after their shared vulnerability.

He smiled, a genuine warmth radiating from him. "I thought you would never ask."

She scoffed, a playful roll of her eyes. "My name is Charles. It's nice meeting you, though." He extended a hand towards her, his fingers long and strong. She shook it without looking at him, her gaze still fixed on some distant point above. He didn't seem to mind, his smile unwavering.

A few more minutes of silence settled between them, a more comfortable quiet this time. "I want to ask you something," he finally said, breaking the spell.

She nodded, a faint tremor running through her. "Go ahead."

"What would you do if you were to see him right now?"

The question struck Gloria like a physical blow, a sharp, sudden pain that resonated deep within her chest. Her entire body trembled, a silent earthquake rocking her composure. She shook her head slowly, the words catching in her throat. "Honestly, I don't know." The admission hung in the air, heavy with uncertainty.

"It's been a very long six months, and I'm just trying to wrap my head around everything. It's just... it's really so crazy. I just can't... I don't know, it's confusing." Her voice was barely a whisper, raw with the weight of her fractured world. "But I'm very, very sure about one thing."

Charles looked at her, his gaze prompting. "And what is that?"

"I truly miss him so much." The confession was a quiet ache, a truth that had gnawed at her soul for half a year.

He exhaled, a sympathetic sound, and nodded his head slowly. "Yeah, I get that."

The silence returned, a shared understanding settling between them, before Charles finally glanced at his wristwatch. "Anyways, I gotta run. Thank you so much for that relief, Gloria." He paused, his gaze softening. "I'm really sorry for making you do what you didn't want to do."

A small, wry smile touched her lips. She shook her head, a hint of sarcasm in her eyes. "It's fine, just get out."

He laughed, a rich, genuine sound that filled the alley. Then, with a playful bow, he turned and disappeared from view, leaving her alone once more with the ghosts of her past and the lingering scent of his presence.

Five minutes later, after she had meticulously gathered her composure, pushing away the swirling thoughts and conflicting emotions, Gloria stepped out of the alley. The city air, crisp and indifferent, brushed against her skin as she headed towards where Annabelle and Adrian awaited now outside the family home.

She rolled her eyes and took a deep, shuddering breath, her eyes fixed on the ground, her entire world tilting precariously on its axis. A confusing kaleidoscope of emotions swirled within her, a tempest she couldn't quite name or contain.

But the moment she got a few meters away from them, a strange pull, an inexplicable instinct, made her lift her head. And the sight that greeted her, the tableau unfolding before her eyes, made the hairs on her arms stand on end, a shiver running down to her very toes.

"Well, well, well, look at what we have here, Gloria."

Annabelle's voice, laced with a familiar, teasing lilt, was what finally jolted Gloria, making her head snap up fully. Her eyes went wide, disbelief warring with a sudden, dizzying hope. Standing beside Annabelle and Adrian, bathed in the harsh, afternoon light, was a figure she thought she might never see again. He looked so handsome, as always, but a subtle change had etched itself upon him. He was a little slimmer, his usual robust composure softened, as though he hadn't been eating properly, as though life had drained 30% of his vibrant essence. A wave of profound recognition, mixed with a gut-wrenching pity, washed over her. Her body began to tremble, uncontrollably, a tremor that started deep within her core and shook her to her fingertips.

"Tristan," she whispered, the name a fragile breath.

Tristan's eyes, those familiar, intense eyes, met hers. A profound relief washed over his face, a raw, aching vulnerability that mirrored her own. "Oh my God," he muttered, the words thick with emotion. "I finally found you."

Gloria didn't know what to think, what to feel, what to do. She just stood there, rooted to the spot, her entire body shaking, disbelief rocking through her very being. Oh my God. She didn't know how her feet propelled her forward, a silent, desperate urge overriding all logic. Tears, hot and unbidden, streamed down her face as she moved towards him, a gravitational pull drawing her closer. And then, she was there, wrapping her arms tightly around him, holding him as if he might vanish, holding him as if her life depended on it. "Oh my God, I've missed you so much," she sobbed into his shoulder, the dam of six months of longing finally breaking.

He chuckled, a ragged, emotional sound, and rubbed his hand against her back, a familiar comfort. "Of course, I did too. You have no idea how long I have been looking for you."

"You have got to be kidding me." Adrian's voice, dry and laced with sarcasm, cut through the emotional reunion. He and Annabelle exchanged glances, eyebrows raised, a shared, knowing smirk playing on their lips as they watched Gloria and Tristan clinging to each other. "Okay, well, well, well, before we take this thing too far, I guess you both know what the next thing to do is, right?"

Tristan slowly turned his head, still holding Gloria close, to look at Annabelle. A grateful smile spread across his face. "Thank you so much," he said, his voice husky.

Gloria felt a jolt of confusion. She glanced at Tristan, then at Annabelle, her brow furrowed. "What are you thanking her for?"

He chuckled, a sheepish glint in his eyes. "Well, I, um... in some weird way, managed to get contact of her, and I had to plead with her and beg her. She was the one that gave me the directions to find you."

Gloria's head snapped back to Annabelle, her expression transforming into one of profound gratitude. Annabelle, ever the queen of nonchalance, scoffed and shook her head, waving a dismissive hand. "Yeah, yeah, right, whatever. Don't give me that look. Don't thank me, okay?" Her voice held a mock exasperation, though a faint blush crept up her neck. "Do you know how hard it was sitting here, looking at you getting miserable day by day all because of one person who almost wrecked your reputation? Goodness, it was killing me, okay? I wasn't going to just sit down and do nothing."

Gloria moved away from Tristan, her eyes still shining with tears, and embraced her sister tightly. "Anyways, thank you so much," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. Annabelle rolled her eyes dramatically, but a small, almost imperceptible squeeze of Gloria's hand betrayed her true feelings.

"Yeah, yeah, right, whatever."

Gloria laughed, a joyful, unburdened sound. She knew that her proud sister was feeling so high and mighty right now, unwilling to admit she truly cared, but Gloria was going to savor it.

"Yeah, right," Annabelle continued, pulling back slightly, her expression turning serious. "But you know that nothing else can happen between you two until Mom and Dad get back and you introduce him to them."

Gloria's eyes went wide, a sudden dread replacing her joy. "Oh, hell no, that is really going to be so bad," she groaned, the memory of her parents' wrath still vivid.

Adrian laughed out loud, a booming sound that echoed through the street. "Yeah, well, what do you expect? You can't just get entangled with him again without proper clearance. Mom and Dad have to get to know him, and you also have work to prove to them that you both are actually right to be together because, girl, that scandal was huge, and you can't blame them if they meet the two of you and disapprove of this reunion."

Gloria closed her eyes, inhaling a shaky breath, then exhaling slowly, bracing herself. She looked at Tristan, her gaze searching, apprehensive. "Are you sure you'll be ready for this?"

Tristan took a deep breath, his hand finding hers and squeezing it reassuringly. "Well, I've spent the past six months scouring entire countries and the entire world looking for you, and preparing myself for anything that comes my way. At this point, I don't think there's anything that can hinder me from getting what I want." His conviction was palpable.

Annabelle, ever the skeptic, looked at him with a raised eyebrow, a smirk playing on her lips. "Yeah, yeah, right. Don't feel so good about yourself, Mr. High and Mighty. You haven't met my parents yet." Her sarcastic tone was so perfectly delivered that Gloria and Adrian threw their heads back, laughing out loud, unable to control their mirth. Tristan, despite the warning, merely smiled, his eyes twinkling.

"Nevertheless, it feels so good to finally meet you," he said, pulling Gloria back into his arms, wrapping them tightly around her.

She smiled, a soft, content expression on her face. "Me too."

"Oh my God, this lovey-dovey activity is killing me," Annabelle declared, rolling her eyes for the umpteenth time. She got up, a dramatic huff escaping her, and began walking away. Adrian, still chuckling, raked his fingers through his hair and smiled. All of them laughed out loud, a wave of genuine happiness washing over the small group.

"Do you mind heading somewhere where we can talk privately, Adrian?" Tristan asked, his gaze fixed on Gloria. She nodded, her heart quickening.

A few minutes later, Gloria found herself back in the familiar, shadowed alley where she had just moments ago sought a fleeting comfort with a stranger. She tried to shake that thought away from her mind, to banish the memory of Charles, but it lingered, a faint echo. That was never gonna happen, she thought to herself, her gaze lifting to Tristan, a certain happiness blooming within her, a joy she hadn't known she still possessed deep down.

Tristan was smiling at her, a knowing glint in his eyes. "If you have any confessions to say, you can say it right now," he teased, his voice low and intimate.

She ground her teeth together, a flush rising to her cheeks. She closed her eyes, taking a deep, fortifying breath. He chuckled, a warm, resonant sound. "It's fine. I understand if you felt you needed to blow off some steam."

His words made her frown. "Really?" she asked, a hint of suspicion in her voice.

He grinned, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Yeah, because I kind of lost control and had to blow off some steam too."

She looked at him, her frown deepening, then dissolving into a playful indignation. "Are you serious?" she said, slapping his shoulder lightly, a burst of laughter escaping her.

He chuckled, catching her hand. "I'm going to feel guilty if you tell me that you actually didn't move with someone else."

She closed her eyes, shaking her head, a smile playing on her lips. "You're right. Fine. We are both guilty."

Tristan laughed out loud, a joyous, unrestrained sound, then chuckled, pulling her closer. "It's okay, baby girl. I understand, okay? We are both messed up. There is nothing good about us, okay? That's the reason why we are meant for each other. It's okay. We just need to assure ourselves that from this moment henceforth, it's just going to be the both of us and nobody else."

Gloria looked at him, her smile blossoming, trying to keep the blush from scorching her face. "Yeah, right, fine," she conceded, her voice soft. He grinned, his eyes raking over her face.

He glanced around the alley, then back at her. "What about John?"

Gloria's smile widened, a mother's pride shining in her eyes. "Well, John is with my parents. Ever since I brought him back home, they've been so fond of him. I haven't even had the time to play with him. He's always with his grandparents, you know, and well, he seems happy with them."

Tristan smiled, a wave of relief washing over him. "I'm happy to see that David wasn't able to lay his hands on him."

Gloria nodded, her expression firm. "Of course, my family wasn't ever going to allow that. After explaining the scenario to them..." She trailed off, the dark memories still raw.

He smiled, understanding. "That's very good."

She looked up at him, her gaze tender, filled with a longing that had been stifled for too long. "I've really missed you."

He smiled, his thumb stroking her cheek. "I've missed you too, baby."

She grinned at him, then moved closer, her fingers tracing the strong line of his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her touch. "I've really, really missed the old times."

He raised an eyebrow, a teasing glint in his eyes. "Really? Do you care to tell me what about the old times you have missed?"

She smiled, a slow, sensual curve of her lips. "The parts when you bent me over and fucked my pussy like your life depended on it."

Tristan's breath hitched, a low growl rumbling in his chest. His eyes darkened, heat flaring within them. "I like where this is going," he murmured, his voice thick with desire.

She smiled, her gaze challenging, inviting. "What are you waiting for, baby? I'm right here, and I'm ready to surrender my all to you without any care that anyone can come in here and catch us in this illicit act."

Her audacious words hit him like a physical blow, igniting a primal fire deep within him, making him very, very hard. "Fuck you, baby," he breathed, his voice raw with need.

She laughed, a low, throaty sound that promised delicious sin. "No. Fuck me like you mean it."
