Epilogue

5 Years Later.

The sun crept over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the rolling hills that surrounded their home. The countryside was quiet, peaceful—so unlike the city where Dominic and Ava had built their lives in the shadow of danger. Now, that life felt like a distant memory, one that had been replaced by something Ava had never dared dream could be hers.

Ava stood at the large kitchen window, watching as their five-year-old son, Nico, chased after a butterfly in the yard. His laughter filled the air, and she couldn’t help but smile, her heart swelling with love and contentment. Just beyond the yard, Dominic was tending to the garden, looking more relaxed than she had ever seen him.

Their home, a beautiful farmhouse nestled in the countryside, was everything she had once thought impossible. It was filled with warmth, light, and most of all, peace. There were no more shadows, no more lingering threats. This was their life now—quiet, idyllic, and safe.

A soft tug on her leg broke her reverie, and Ava looked down to see their two-year-old daughter, Emilia, peering up at her with wide, curious eyes.

“Mama,” Emilia said, her voice sweet and soft, “pway?”

Ava’s smile widened as she knelt down, brushing a curl of Emilia’s dark hair behind her ear. “Play? What do you want to play, sweetheart?”

Emilia held up a small stuffed rabbit, one of her constant companions, and pointed toward the kitchen table, where a tea set had been carefully arranged. “Tea party.”

Ava laughed softly, standing and taking Emilia’s tiny hand in hers. “A tea party, huh? Alright, let’s set up for a very fancy tea party. But you have to be the hostess, okay?”

“’Kay!” Emilia giggled, toddling off toward the table as Ava followed behind.

As they settled into the small chairs around the tea set, Ava poured imaginary tea into the delicate cups. Emilia’s eyes sparkled with delight as she offered her stuffed rabbit a sip, her tiny hands mimicking her mother’s movements. It was moments like these that Ava cherished the most—the simplicity, the joy that came from watching her children grow in a world free from fear.

“Thank you, ma’am,” Ava said in a posh, playful voice as she pretended to sip the tea. “This tea is simply delightful.”

Emilia giggled again, holding up her cup. “More tea, Mama!”

Ava poured another round, her heart light. Five years ago, she never would have imagined this. There had been times when she feared she and Dominic would never escape the violence that had once consumed their lives. But Dominic had kept his promise. He had severed all ties to his former life, building a legitimate business that allowed them to live in peace.

The sound of the back door creaking open caught her attention, and she glanced up to see Dominic stepping inside, wiping his hands on a towel. His eyes found hers, and the smile that tugged at his lips sent warmth flooding through her. He looked so different now—calmer, softer. The hard edges that had once defined him were still there, but they had been smoothed by years of peace and the love they had built together.

“Tea party, huh?” Dominic said, his voice warm as he crossed the room to join them. He knelt beside Emilia, brushing a kiss against her cheek. “Can I get a cup, too, little miss?”

Emilia beamed at her father, holding up her empty cup. “Daddy, you need tea!”

Dominic accepted the cup, playing along as he took a pretend sip. “Mmm, the best tea I’ve ever had. Thank you, Emilia.”

Ava watched them with a soft smile, her heart swelling with love. There was a time when Dominic had been a man feared by many, a man who had built his life on power and control. But now, he was just Dominic—her husband, their children’s father, and the man who had fought harder than anyone to give them this life.

“Where’s Nico?” Dominic asked, glancing toward the window.

“Outside,” Ava said, gesturing toward the yard. “He’s chasing butterflies.”

Dominic chuckled, standing and crossing the room to peer out the window. “Well, I guess I’ll go give him a hand. Maybe I’ll catch one for him.”

Ava smiled as she watched Dominic step outside, the sight of him walking across the yard toward their son filling her with a sense of peace she had never thought possible. Emilia, satisfied with her tea party, climbed into Ava’s lap, resting her head against her chest.

“Mama, Daddy happy?” Emilia asked, her voice soft.

Ava’s heart warmed at the question. She kissed the top of her daughter’s head and whispered, “Yes, sweetheart. Daddy is very happy.”

Outside, Nico was still chasing the butterfly, his laughter ringing through the air as he darted across the yard. Dominic watched him for a moment, his heart swelling with pride. Nico was everything he had ever wanted in a son—bright, curious, and so full of life.

“Hey, buddy,” Dominic called as he approached, crouching down to meet his son’s excited gaze. “You having fun?”

Nico grinned up at his father, his green eyes—so much like Ava’s—sparkling with mischief. “The butterfly’s too fast, Daddy! I almost caught him!”

Dominic chuckled, ruffling his son’s hair. “Well, maybe we’ll get him next time. Want to help me in the garden for a bit?”

Nico nodded eagerly, his small hand slipping into Dominic’s as they walked toward the garden together. Dominic’s heart tightened slightly as he looked down at his son. Five years ago, when Nico had been born, Dominic had held him for the first time and realized that everything he had done—every sacrifice, every fight—had led to that moment. And now, with both Nico and Emilia, he understood that the life they had created was worth every struggle.

As they reached the garden, Dominic handed Nico a small watering can, watching as his son carefully poured water over the flowers. It was a simple task, but there was something peaceful about it—something grounding.

“Daddy, did you always live here?” Nico asked, looking up at Dominic with wide, curious eyes.

Dominic smiled, shaking his head. “No, buddy. Your mom and I used to live in the city.”

“Did you catch butterflies there, too?” Nico asked.

Dominic laughed softly, shaking his head again. “No, no butterflies in the city. But we had to leave because it wasn’t safe. Now we live here, where it’s much better.”

Nico nodded, his little brow furrowing as he processed his father’s words. “I like it here. It’s pretty. And we can always be together.”

Dominic’s heart swelled at his son’s innocent words. “That’s right. We’ll always be together.”

He crouched down beside Nico, his voice soft. “You know, your mom and I didn’t always have it easy. But we worked really hard to make sure you and your sister could grow up somewhere safe. That’s why we live here now—so you don’t have to worry about anything.”

Nico looked up at him, his expression thoughtful. “You’re like a superhero, Daddy. You keep us safe.”

Dominic smiled, the weight of his son’s words settling over him. There had been a time when he had believed that his only way of protecting his family was through power and control. But now, standing here in this quiet garden with his son, he knew that real strength came from the love they had built together.

“I guess you could say that,” Dominic said softly, brushing a hand over Nico’s head. “But you and your sister—you’re the real heroes, you know that? You gave me and your mom a reason to fight for something better.”

Nico beamed, his small chest puffing with pride. “I’m a hero?”

“You sure are,” Dominic replied, pulling him into a tight hug. “You’re our hero.”

Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the house, Ava and Dominic sat together on the porch, watching their children play in the yard. Emilia toddled after Nico, her laughter filling the air as they chased each other in circles.

Ava leaned her head against Dominic’s shoulder, her heart filled with contentment. “Five years,” she murmured softly, her voice tinged with disbelief. “Can you believe it?”

Dominic smiled, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “I can’t believe how far we’ve come,” he admitted quietly. “There were days when I didn’t think any of this would be possible.”

Ava nodded, her fingers lacing through his as they watched their children. “I didn’t think so either. But you kept your promise, Dominic. You gave us a life free from all the darkness. I’m so proud of you.”

Dominic’s heart swelled at her words, but there was still a part of him that carried the weight of his past. He had walked away from the violence, from the empire he had built on blood and control, but he could never fully erase the man he had once been.

“I couldn’t have done it without you,” he said softly, his voice filled with emotion. “You and the kids... you saved me, Ava. I was so lost before you came into my life. I didn’t know what it meant to have something worth protecting, something worth living for.”

Ava smiled, lifting her head to meet his gaze. “You were always worth saving, Dominic. I always knew you had it in you.”

They sat in comfortable silence for a while, watching as the last light of the day faded into twilight, their children’s laughter still echoing around them. The shadows of their past would always be there, lingering in the background, but they no longer felt so heavy. They no longer defined who they were.

“I still think about it sometimes,” Dominic admitted quietly, his voice barely more than a whisper. “The things I’ve done, the people I’ve hurt. But when I look at you and the kids... it feels like it was all for something. Like maybe I can finally let it go.”

Ava turned to him, her eyes filled with love and understanding. “You don’t have to carry that weight anymore, Dominic. We’ve built something beautiful together. We’ve created a life filled with love. That’s what matters now.”

Dominic looked down at her, his heart swelling with gratitude and love for the woman who had stood by his side through everything. “You’re right. This... this is what matters.”

Ava smiled, resting her head against his shoulder once more. “We’ve earned this, Dominic. We’ve earned this life, this peace. We don’t have to be afraid anymore.”

Dominic wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close as they watched Nico and Emilia play, their hearts full of hope and love. The future was still unknown, and there would always be challenges, but they had built something unshakable—something that would last.

They had built a family.

And for the first time, Dominic truly believed that they could live the life they had dreamed of, free from the shadows of the past. Together, they could face anything.

Together, they had found peace.
