Chapter 51
Chapter 51
Nyra's POV
I spent days trying to convince Fiona that I was okay and what had happened was only an episode of sadness, but she demanded for more information.
It made it less easy to ask her not to include me on the camp list. I tried to fake illness once, but she offered to take me to Ethan, which I humbly declined and drank some tea to say I was all better.
It was easy to lie to Fiona. Most times I told myself that she just wasn't nosy enough or didn't care about other people's personal lives, not that much that she would want to pry into the secrets they were hiding.
I washed my face in the bathroom sink before using a face towel to wipe the water off. The transformations had suddenly stopped, and I could have been more relieved, but instead, I panicked on the insides. Letting out a small sigh, I gathered myself and went downstairs for breakfast.
“Oh hey Tina, Good morning.”
The usual happy morning face of Tina greeted me but this time she was in formal sexy clothing, one she wouldn't wear to the office.
“Where are you headed?”
“On a date with Ethan,” she smiled.
“By 8am?”
“Right? When he said to come have breakfast with him, I thought the same thing, but then the doctors made misquoted demands, like writing a prescription.” Then she paused and whispered. “I sometimes go to another pharmacy just to ask them what they wrote on the paper.”
Then giggle lightly
“Oh,” I say, watching her slide her hand bag over her shoulders as she headed for the front door.
“Should I tell him you said hi?” She said while closing the door behind her.
“Oh no, that's not necessary,” I yelled back.
“Silly,” she laughed it off. “When I come back, we are packing for the camp.”
Arrrgggh but I couldn't show her my discomfort.
“Oh alright”
The second she left the door, I slumped on the couch and sat there till I could think straight. I rose up and went to the refrigerator, taking out a jar of peanut butter and some bread.
One of my favorites since I came to the human world. I strode towards the living room to take the knife Fiona had used for Goddess knows what and walked back towards the kitchen.
“Oh my Goddess,” the knife flew from my hand and onto the floor as I stared in horror at my illusions.
“What?” The girl on the counter scoffed, “Never seen a brunette eating a sandwich at the counter?” She rolled her eyes.
“No, I mean yes.”
There was no way I was seeing Celeste eating a sandwich on the kitchen counter. “You're not real, are you? I'm just seeing things."
I move over to the kitchen sink to wash my face again.
“And why would you be seeing things?” She said with a mouthful of sandwich.
“I don’t know, maybe because your weird prophecy has been on to me like a leech.” I wipe my face with my sleeve.
“Mhhm fair point,” reaching out for another slice of bread with a thumb filled with peanut butter.
“What am I even doing? There's no way you are even sitting here right now,” I shook my head and pressed my palm against my head.
“I'm a witch, Nyra. Of course, I can be here and there at the same time,” she informed as she swung her legs in amusement.
I sighed.
“But why are you here?” I demanded.
“Oh, excuse me if it doesn't bother me that a threat to wolf species is running loose and planning for camping,” she replied sarcastically.
“Wolf species?” I clarified. “Why does that even bother you?” I crossed my arms.
“Hello,” she waved the slice of buttered bread in my face. “Mr Ethan is a wolf and I still need his mother's Gilmore for my spells, if he dies, bye Gilmore.”
I rolled my eyes
“Um, well I don't care.”
“I know you don't, but I do, that's why I can't leave a threat…”
“Can you stop calling me that?!” I cut her off.
Well, you didn't believe it when I said a powerful royal bloodline, so you relate more to being called a threat, considering the fact that you thought of killing your taxi driver.
You wretched spy
Couldn't believe she was the one spying on me and telling everyone
“I watched you go home, Nyra, it's a basic thing to do,” she shrugged.
“As well as telling everyone about it,” I rolled my eyes yet again.
“Pst," she climbed down from the counter. “I don't know what you're talking about, but I do like the sound of camps.”
“Well, if you must know, I don't want to be there.”
“I hope so because…”
“Isshh, can you not talk to me about this? I'm sure I've spent all of my day pondering about the worst that could happen”
“Well, if someone doesn't….”
Suddenly, the door opened, and my heart stopped, but it was Fiona. I sighed in relief, then quickly turned around for Celeste, but there was no Celeste, then I wondered why I didn't hear the sound of her car when it drove in.
She slumped on the couch and I hoped no one saw me while I talked to Celeste from anywhere, especially now that I think I'm being spied on.
“What happened to your date?” I walked up to her as she took off her shoes.
“He had an emergency call,” she groaned, then thrashed out on the couch. “Why is it so fucking hard to be with a doctor?”
She whined.
“Then leave him,” I suggested in a tone I hoped she didn't hear.
“Nope, he's smart. Nothing turns me on than smart guys” she smiled even more widely, then rose up from where she sat and said
“Who were you talking to?”
What?
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“Kinda heard your voice seconds before I entered. It was pretty intense.”
I chuckled awkwardly.
“No one,” then I took her arm. “Let's get packing.”
But the moment my fingers brushed her skin, I felt it, a chill, unmistakable and biting, and from the kitchen came a whisper I couldn’t mistake: Celeste’s laughter, low and dangerous, echoing where no one stood.
