Chapter 38
Chapter 38
Nyra's POV
I reached for my alarm the next morning. I could not afford to be late on my first day of work, so I made sure to have it ring at five in the morning.
Putting on a black floral skirt and a thin sea green material-like shirt that showed off one side of my shoulder, the dark green scarf was tied around my neck and along with a beret. If I was now a fashionista, then I should dress like one.
Leaving the house, I walked past the lawn and past the gate but at the end of the road was Fiona's car, honking at me to stop.
I smiled and walked up to where she had parked, glancing at my wristwatch. I still had 54 minutes more to get to work.
“I thought you would be in the office by now.”
“Really? And leave you here at home?” she arched her brows.
“Yeah, about that. I'm going to work on my own,” I said.
“Oh please, come on, we literally work in the same building,” she urged.
“No, I shouldn't”.
“You shouldn't? Why do you think you shouldn’t get a free ride to the office, more so in your boss's car?”
I looked away then at my wrist for the time, hoping I still had enough time to get to the office on my own, but Fiona had caught on.
“Oh my god Tina, we live in the same house, why do you care so much about what people will say?”
I pinched the middle of my forehead and sighed heavily.
“It's not about what people would say, it's about me getting to work on my own so they know that I don't have anyone licking my foot or anything.”
“And what does me taking you to work have anything to do with anyone licking your feet?” she throws her hands in frustration.
“It doesn't, I just want to make it on my own, I don't want anyone saying I made it to the top with your help.”
“That's silly," she laughed it off, but I started taking my leave, and she yelled again, “So what? You're just going to leave the house in a bus, whereas I own cars of my own”.
I kept on walking.
“Yes Fiona, you can go, and I'll take the bus.”
I heard the engine reviving, and she drove the car beside me as I walked towards the bus stop.
“Okay, this is how it is? You're walking away…. May I remind you that you have just 45 minutes to get to the office.”
“I'm pretty conscious of the time and I will get there in time if you just stop talking to me.”
I say with a frustrated tone.
“Oh really, and if you don't, consider yourself fired," she yelled at me as she drove off immediately, leaving me to wait at the bus stop.
I arrived at the office a minute late, it made my blood boil when I caught a glimpse of Fiona's car parked in the parking lot as well as other workers' cars.
I dashed into the building, past the corridors and into the elevators.
As I approached the office, Ella's face greeted me warmly.
“Oh Tina, you're right on time," she tugged at my arm immediately and led me towards the other side of the corridor out of the office.
It was then I noticed that everyone was moving in the same direction. I let her drag me to goddess knows where.
“Where is everyone going?” I whispered to her.
“A meeting, a very crucial one," she replied with a hushing tone as well.
Soon enough, we were in a different boardroom. Each one of the fashionistas working in this company stood in the well interior boardroom that had glass lights and marble tables. I admired the dressed-up dolls around each corner of the office, they were each looking explicit.
Soon after some minutes had gone past, a tall blonde lady walked in, with her red bottom heels hitting the floor.
She held a smile that made me doubt she was going to make this meeting crucial.
“Good morning, everyone,” she said out loud, then paused.
“I hope you all slept well…. I am Mrs. Williams, for the new ones who don't know me, and I am your coordinator for the magazine event.”
Every one clapped, making her smile grow even more. Though she kept a serious face, immediately the ovation had died down.
“Today, we have some people from Vogue coming," she spoke as she walked around the room.
“And”, stopping at one of the workers to help readjust the mistake she made while knotting her scarf. “We need special designs to show it to them," she continued.
“So, the first task of the day is to create designs that we will show to them. They are very important people, and we need these designs to strike a contract deal with them as soon as possible.”
I had heard of Vogue and if these designs were going to be used to strike deals, then this was more than crucial, especially since I was new, this was my time to make a good impression.
“I am very sure that you guys know what striking a contract with Vogue means to this company?” Her brow arched.
“Yes, we do,” everyone thundered softly.
“Good, I am glad you know. Now hurry up. Materials will be sent to your desk; I trust that you can turn that paper into an artwork.”
With that she smiled again, and it gave me enough time to lean into Ella to ask...
“What does she mean by papers?”
“It's for sketching design, create yours.”
“Ohh”, I said.
I had never designed on paper, and I was sure it would be as easy as it was said, but I was used to dressing up mannequins or myself in my own style.
Sketching my own design was something worth trying… but as we were moving back to the office, a cold prickle ran down my spine, because the idea that had just flashed through my mind could either crown me a genius before Vogue or destroy every chance I had at surviving this job.
