Chapter 60 A Mother's Sacrifice

Chapter 60 A Mother's Sacrifice
Lily POV
The abandoned factory loomed before me like a tomb, its broken windows staring down like hollow eyes. My legs trembled as I stepped out of the car, but I forced them to move forward. Somewhere inside that crumbling building, my baby girl was waiting for me.
"Lily, please reconsider," Agent Morrison's voice crackled through the tiny earpiece hidden in my ear. "We can find another way."
I touched the wire taped to my chest beneath my shirt. "There is no other way. He'll kill her if I don't come alone."
"We'll be right behind you. The moment you have Emma, we move in."
I didn't answer. We both knew Alex wouldn't make it that simple.
The factory's metal door shrieked as I pushed it open. Rust and decay filled my nostrils. My footsteps echoed through the vast, empty space, each sound making my heart pound harder.
"Lily." Alex's voice drifted from somewhere in the shadows. "Right on time. I always appreciated your punctuality."
I squinted into the darkness. "Where's my daughter, Alex?"
A light flickered on in the far corner, illuminating a small circle. Alex stood there, and my breath caught, he was holding Emma. Even from this distance, I could see her tiny face was flushed red with fever, her little body limp against his chest.
"Emma!" I started forward, but Alex raised his free hand.
"Stop right there." His voice was cold. "Come any closer, and I drop her."
I froze, my arms aching with the need to hold my baby. "Please, Alex. She's sick. She needs a hospital."
"She needs her mother." His laugh was bitter. "Funny how things work out, isn't it? You were supposed to die quietly, and instead, you destroyed everything I built."
"You destroyed yourself." I kept my voice steady despite the rage burning in my chest. "You chose to hurt people. To kill innocent women."
"Innocent?" He spat the word. "Rebecca was a nagging shrew. Michelle questioned every penny I spent. And you, you were supposed to be different, Lily. Quiet. Obedient. Grateful."
"I was never yours to control."
His face twisted with fury. "I gave you everything! A home, a life, purpose! And you threw it away for some billionaire fantasy."
Emma whimpered, a weak, pitiful sound that tore through my heart. Her tiny hand clutched at Alex's shirt.
"She's burning up," I said desperately. "Whatever you want from me, I'll give it. Just let me take her to the hospital."
Alex's smile was cruel. "What I want is simple, Lily. Everything you have."
He gestured to a table beside him where papers were spread out. "Your inheritance. Your trust fund. The life insurance payout from your supposed death. Sign it all over to me, and maybe, maybe, I'll let you take the baby."
"You're insane. The FBI knows you're here. You'll never get away with this."
"Won't I?" He pulled a phone from his pocket. "Judge Morrison was very understanding when I explained my situation. Turns out, everyone has a price. Mine cost two million dollars, but it bought my freedom."
My stomach dropped. "You bribed a judge."
"I paid for justice." He set the phone down, still cradling Emma with one arm. "Now sign the papers, or your daughter dies right here in front of you."
I moved slowly toward the table, my hands shaking. The documents were legitimate, transfer of assets, custody rights, everything. My signature would make him a millionaire and give him legal rights to my child.
"The wire," Alex said suddenly. "Take it off."
My blood ran cold. "What wire?"
"Don't insult my intelligence." He shifted Emma in his arms, and she made a weak crying sound. "I know the FBI is listening. Take off the wire, or I start hurting her."
Tears streamed down my face as I reached under my shirt and ripped the wire free. The tape tore at my skin. I dropped it on the concrete floor and crushed it under my heel.
"The earpiece too."
I pulled it out and threw it away, watching it skitter across the floor. Now I was truly alone with him.
"Good girl." Alex's voice dripped with satisfaction. "Now sign."
I picked up the pen with trembling fingers. "If I do this, you let us go. Both of us."
"Of course." But something in his eyes made my blood freeze.
I signed the first document. Then the second. As I reached for the third, I looked up at him. "Why, Alex? Why did you become this?"
He laughed, a harsh, broken sound. "You want to know why? Because the world is full of people who have everything handed to them. People like Tony Stark, born into wealth and privilege. While people like me have to fight and claw for every scrap."
"So you killed for it."
"I took what I deserved." His grip on Emma tightened, making her whimper. "And I would have gotten away with it if you hadn't ruined everything."
I signed the last document, my hand shaking so badly I could barely write. "There. It's done. Now give me my daughter."
Alex looked at the papers, then back at me. His smile was the coldest thing I'd ever seen.
"You really thought I'd let you walk out of here? After everything you've done?" He pulled a gun from his waistband. "You destroyed my life, Lily. You took Sarah from me. You took my future. Now I'm going to take everything from you."
The gun pointed at my chest. Time seemed to slow. I saw Emma's feverish face. I saw the madness in Alex's eyes. I saw my death approaching.
"FBI! Drop the weapon!" Agent Morrison's voice boomed through the factory as armed agents poured in from every entrance.
Alex's face contorted with rage. "No!" He grabbed Emma more tightly and ran, not toward an exit but toward a metal staircase leading up.
"Alex, stop!" I screamed, chasing after him. My weakened body protested every step, but I didn't care. He had my baby.
We burst through a door onto the factory's roof. Wind whipped around us, and I could hear the distant wail of sirens. Below, red and blue lights flooded the street.
Alex backed toward the roof's edge, holding Emma like a shield. "Stay back! I swear I'll drop her!"
"Alex, please." I held up my hands, inching closer. "Don't do this. She's innocent. She's just a baby."
"She's leveraged." He dangled Emma over the edge, and my heart stopped. "Tell them to get me a helicopter. Now!"
Emma's weak cry cut through the wind. Her little face was so red, her breathing labored. She was dying, and he didn't even care.
"Look at me, Alex." I kept my voice soft, even though every instinct screamed at me to rush him. "Do you remember when we first met? You were charming. Thoughtful. You brought me coffee every morning, exactly how I liked it."
"Shut up.."
"You could have been good." I took another small step. "Somewhere inside you, there was a man who could have been happy without hurting people. What happened to him?"
His hand wavered slightly. "He never existed. That was always a lie."
"I don't believe that." Another step. I was fifteen feet away now. "I think he got lost. I think the world hurt him so much that he forgot how to be anything but angry."
"Stop." His voice cracked. "Stop trying to make me human."
"You are human, Alex. You're broken and hurt and angry, but you're human." Ten feet away. "And humans can choose to be better. Even now. Even after everything, you can choose to be the man who saved a sick baby instead of the monster who killed her."
Tears streamed down his face. "It's too late for me."
"It's not too late to do one good thing."
For a moment, one impossible moment, I thought I'd reached him. His grip on Emma loosened slightly. His eyes met mine, and I saw something almost human flicker there.
Then a shot rang out. The gun flew from Alex's free hand, blown away by a sniper's bullet. Alex screamed in pain and surprise. Emma slipped from his arms.
Everything happened at once. Alex lunged for the baby. I dove forward, my arms outstretched. Time fractured into fragments, Emma's falling body, Alex's desperate grab, my hands reaching, reaching, reaching.
My fingers closed around Emma's tiny body. I had her. I had my baby. But my momentum carried me forward. I was going over the edge.
A hand clamped around my wrist. Agent Morrison had me, pulling me back from the brink. Emma screamed in my arms, a strong, healthy scream that told me she was alive.
Alex wasn't so lucky. His lunge for Emma had taken him too far. He teetered on the edge, his arms windmilling.
"Lily.." His voice was almost pleading.
Our eyes met for one last moment. I saw the man he could have been and the monster he'd become. Then gravity claimed him, and he fell.
I turned away before he hit the ground, pressing Emma's fevered little face against my chest. "It's okay, baby girl. Mama's got you. You're safe now. You're safe."
Emma's weak cry against my neck was the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard. Behind me, I heard the terrible impact. Alex Morrison was gone. And finally, after everything, it was over..
