Chapter 92: The Unexpected Anniversary
Sophia was drinking her morning tea in her bright kitchen. She couldn't get the preceding several weeks out of her head, the anonymous warnings, and the anxiety around Grace's new connection. However, it was the third anniversary of her marriage to Alexander, and she wanted to emphasize the happiness of their journey together.
She was thinking when her phone chimed. When she picked it up, Alexander had left a message:
"Let's meet at this location, be there at 5:00 PM. Put on your best clothes. Have faith in me.
The heart of Sophia fluttered. It was their retreat, a particular location in the garden. What could Alexander be preparing?
This fascination persisted throughout the day for Sophia. On their first anniversary, she donned a flowing, white garment that had special meaning for her. The sun was sinking, and the walkway was golden as she walked to the garden as the clock approached five.
As she got to the garden's entrance, she saw that it was filled with rose petals even to the whole garden . The air was filled with gentle music, and the trees were adorned with fairy lights. It was a captivating sight.
Framed photos hung from the trees as Sophia followed the petal-strewn walkway. Their ten years together, their wedding day, their vacations, the birth of their children, and their calm moments of laughing were all recorded in one picture. She shed tears as she let go of each memory.
Alexander, wearing a well-tailored suit, stood at the end of the walk. He was accompanied by a small group of their closest friends and relatives as well as an officiant. Grace stood with a joyful smile on her face.
Alexander, with love in his eyes, grasped Sophia's hands.Three years ago,we made a vow to support one another through all of life's pleasures and hardships. I want to celebrate our common journey and restate those vows today."
With warmth, the officiant grinned. "Hi everyone. A tribute to Alexander and Sophia's unwavering love, we are gathered here to see them reaffirm their vows.
Alexander spoke in a steady, sincere tone. "Sophia, ever since we first met in this same garden, you have served as both my inspiration and my rock. I pledge to always love you, to encourage your goals, and to develop my love and understanding for you."
With some visible water in her eyes,Sophia answered. "Alexander, you have been my greatest love, my companion, and my rock. I promise to be there for you, to strengthen our relationship, and to welcome whatever the future brings."
Nodding, the officiant said. "May these renewed vows strengthen the bond you share and remind you of the love that brought you together."
As the ceremony came to an end, the yard was turned into a joyous space. A big table with flowers and candles was waiting for them. While guests ate a delicious lunch, laughed, and shared tales, gentle music played.
Grace walked over and gave Sophia a firm embrace. "I'm really glad for you two. This was very lovely.
Sophia grinned, her heart bursting with appreciation. "I appreciate your presence. Your assistance is much appreciated.
Sophia followed Alexander on the dance floor as the evening wore on. The world faded away as they rejoiced in their love, swaying under the starry sky.
As the evening wore on, Sophia took a moment to gather her thoughts. As she strolled into a quiet area of the garden, the cold air felt good on her skin. She heard people talking quietly as she rounded a corner.
She looked through the leaves and saw Grace talking to a guy who was facing away from her. There was tension in the body language and a serious tone. Straining to hear, Sophia's heart pounded.
Grace said in a forceful tone. "As I said, this is not the right time or location. We can't talk about this here."
With a quiet, desperate voice, the guy answered. "But the truth must be told to her. She needs to be protected.
Sophia's breath caught. Were they discussing her? Which truth? What's at risk?
Sophia identified him as Ethan as the guy turned slightly before she could comprehend any more information.
A feeling of perplexity and fear swept over her. In what way did Ethan participate? How was she concerned about it?
Sophia flattened herself against the tree trunk, listening for more, her heart racing. The intensity in Ethan's tone was clear, even though his voice was no more than a whisper.
"Grace, you're not understanding. Ethan remarked, his posture stiff, "It could be disastrous if she finds out too late."
With trepidation, Grace looked around before yelling, "I warned you, not here! Sophia and Alexander are the focus of this evening. Right now, she doesn't need this load.
With her heart pounding, Sophia balled her fists. *What weight?* What had Grace concealed from her?
Ethan gave a quick breath, clearly frustrated. "There isn't much more time to wait. The more she remains in the dark, the more exposed she is. He is observing.
Sophia felt nauseous. Was he the one observing her? A chilly shiver went through her body.
With her arms crossed, Grace's face was inscrutable. "I'll let her know when it's appropriate. "I simply need more time."
After a moment of hesitation, Ethan grudgingly agreed. “All right. Grace, nevertheless, don't wait too long. This is larger than you may imagine.
With her thoughts racing, Sophia stepped back. Alexander's voice rang out from a distance before she could face them, even if she wanted answers.
Sophia? Where are you?
She winced, then swerved to gather herself before emerging from behind the tree. Approaching her spouse, she attempted a grin.
She glanced over her shoulder and murmured gently, "I just needed some air," Grace and Ethan were no longer there.
Alexander, unaware of her distress, put his arm around her. "My dear, return inside. We are the focus of tonight.
Sophia nodded, but her mind was far else. Her mind was filled with questions, which clouded the pleasure of the celebration that went on around her.
Sophia sat on the balcony of their bedroom later that evening after the visitors had gone and their children gone to bed and gazed at the city skyline. Behind her, Alexander wrapped a warm shawl across her shoulders.
He said, "You've been quiet," and planted a kiss on her temple.
After hesitating, Sophia turned to look at him. Does it ever seem like something is hiding in plain sight? As if you should know a truth, but nobody wants to share it with you?
Alexander studied her intently and scowled. "Did something happen tonight?"
Sophia's mouth opened, then shut. She wanted to share with him what she had heard of the mysterious exchange between Grace and Ethan. However, she was impeded by something.
Her response was a sigh. "I simply feel like something is about to happen. I'm not sure whether I'm prepared for it either."
She put her hands in Alexander's. "We'll confront it together, no matter what. Constantly.
Leaning into his hug, Sophia nodded. But she felt in her heart that their anniversary party had been ruined.
And that was only the beginning of the storm
