Chapter 132 Very Low Pregnancy Rate

Chapter 132 Very Low Pregnancy Rate

After a night's rest, Evie had fully recovered.

Since she was already at the hospital, she figured she might as well get a gynecological checkup.

Though she'd been working on her health lately, her period had been delayed for quite some time now, leaving her constantly on edge.

James waited outside until the examination was over before coming in.

When the doctor handed over the report, her tone was somber. "Your endometrial lining is thin, hormone levels are low, and there are signs of declining ovarian function. It can be treated, but results vary from person to person. The chances of conceiving naturally will be fairly low."

Hearing this, Evie's heart plummeted.

She looked down at the dense rows of data and conclusions on the paper, her fingertips gripping the edge tightly.

"But I've never had an abortion. Why would pregnancy still be difficult even with treatment?" Evie asked.

"I've reviewed your other test results as well. I don't know what you've been through, but your body has sustained serious damage. Abortion isn't the only thing that affects fertility," the doctor said.

Evie clenched her fists, her nails nearly digging into her palms.

She wasn't fixated on becoming a mother, but the fact that Vivian and Jasper had robbed her of the 'choice' to be one—that felt unbearably unfair.

Just as the pain welled up inside her, James reached over and gently uncurled her clenched fist, lacing his fingers through hers.

"Don't worry. The odds are just lower, right? If you really want a child, I'll do everything in my power to help you," James said softly.

Evie sighed, her expression still troubled.

Seeing her like this, James smiled and tapped the tip of her nose playfully. "What's with that look? Are you doubting me? Don't forget—you married one of the top doctors in the country. You think I can't handle something like this?"

Evie shot him an irritated glance. "You're a surgeon. What do you know about gynecology?"

"I may not specialize in gynecology, but I've got money. If you don't trust my medical skills, at least trust my 'financial healing' skills."

Evie couldn't help but laugh at that, and her mood lightened considerably.

Back in the hospital room, Evie leaned against the headboard, watching James bustle around—pouring her water, peeling fruit.

After a long silence, she finally spoke. "Honestly, I'm not set on having kids. After everything I've been through, I'd rather focus on myself. But…"

She paused, looking at him seriously. "If I really can't have children, and you suddenly decide you want to be a father someday… will you regret it?"

James sat on the edge of the bed and pulled her into his arms with a smile.

"Is being a father some kind of glorious career? Why would I regret it? Besides, 'you're' the one who'd be having the baby. If you want to, I'll be a father. If you don't, I'll just be your husband. The decision is entirely yours."

Hearing this, Evie felt a wave of emotion and squeezed his hand tightly. "Thank you, James."

"I should be thanking you—for walking into my dark life." James pressed a tender kiss to her forehead.

After leaving the hospital, Evie returned to her peaceful, fulfilling campus life.

Following the incident with Tyler, James didn't feel comfortable letting her stay in the dorms, so he arranged for her to live off-campus.

Ever since moving out, every day brought Evie a new surprise.

Sometimes it was James waiting for her after class with dinner already made.

Sometimes it was waking up in the middle of the night to find him slipping under the covers and pulling her into his arms.

And even when James couldn't get away from the hospital, he'd have a huge bouquet of flowers delivered to her.

One evening, the two of them lounged on the couch together, Evie nestled in his arms. The TV was on, but neither of them was watching.

James's hand rested on her shoulder, his fingers tapping lightly in a slow, rhythmic pattern—like he was petting a calm, contented cat.

The atmosphere was warm and easy, so much so that when James said what he said next, Evie didn't process it right away.

"I'm leaving for Thailand tomorrow."

Evie froze. "So soon?"

"Yeah. It's been scheduled for a while."

Evie's expression dimmed. She leaned back into his chest, falling silent.

But gradually, her face grew more troubled. "I'm a little worried, though."

"It'll be fine." James looked down at her, brushing a soft kiss across her forehead.

"But we don't know what the situation is over there. Maybe… maybe we shouldn't dig into it anymore. I think things are pretty good the way they are now."

Evie meant it.

Even though she hated the pain of those three years—even though she'd wanted nothing more than to drag everyone who hurt her straight to hell—maybe her life now was just 'too good'. So good that the memories of that suffering were starting to fade.

She didn't want to risk losing the stability she had now. She'd been through too many uncertainties. All she wanted now was to hold on to what she could.

James looked down at the top of her head, gently smoothing a strand of hair over her shoulder.

"If we don't eliminate the problem at the root, Thailand will be like a ticking time bomb. I don't want to see you in danger again. And this trip is also to find information about your parents."

Evie stiffened, a complicated feeling rising in her chest.

She opened her mouth, wanting to say she wasn't as fixated on it anymore—but in the end, she said nothing. She just buried her face deeper into the curve of his shoulder.

Evie knew James was doing all of this for her.

"Then please… be careful," she said, her voice muffled.

"I will."

Evie stayed still in his arms, her fingers lightly clutching the hem of his shirt. She closed her eyes and listened to his heartbeat.

The room was quiet and peaceful.
