Chapter 32 Chapter 32
ALPHA XANDER'S POV
I was a bit nervous as I walked into Adriana's hospital room. The last we'd seen each other, I had refused to listen to what she had to say and I accept full responsibility for what happened to her. The guilt was eating me up, there was no way to stop it. I doubted she wanted to see me anyways but that wasn't about to stop me.
With a heavy heart, I turned the knob and pushed the door open. Adriana was lying on the bed, her eyes opened and she was staring ahead. Apprehension ate at my insides seeing her like that, I was overtaken with joy, she was awake and fine and I wanted nothing more than to wrap my arms around her. The mate bond pushed me to do that, common sense had me taking small tentative steps towards her bed. I've never been this careful or cautious with anyone. I never had to be, so it was slightly overwhelming.
I was a few feet away from her bedside, Dacian pushed herself forward and took her arm, she whispered something to her that I didn't pay attention to, I tried to say something when I heard the unmistakable sound of a growl. It was a low, rumbling sound that filled the room, confusing me. The doctor, who had been standing at the foot of her bed, looked up at me with a concerned expression and asked if we would let her rest, I wanted to argue every fiber of my being wanted me to fight her but I just nodded and exited the room, Daciana hot on my heels.
"Are you okay?" she asked, concern etched on her face. "You should have expected that."
"I don't know," I replied, my voice tight. "I don't know if that's her own way of getting back at me. At the end of the day she will still come back to me. Or maybe she's just responding to primal instincts, or maybe she's gone nuts." The words flew past my lips, in a flurry of panic.
"Fuck off, Xander." Daciana said. "You know you caused all this. Your presence is why she's reacting like that." She grumbled, glaring at me. I didn't have anything to retort with so I stayed silent. She was right about it, there was no use fighting. I needed to figure out how to get Adriana to at least see me so I could explain, not that there was anything I could say that would make any of this better.
We sat down on a bench along the passageway, but my eyes remained on the window, watching as the doctor and nurses tended to Adriana. I wanted nothing more than to leave this place and put this entire ordeal behind me, but there was no way I would bring myself to leave her side. She was my mate, and I needed to make sure she was okay.
My mind raced with a thousand different thoughts, all centered towards how to fix this thing with Adriana. The door to Adriana's room opened a few minutes later, and a group of nurses walked out, all going to different places, they returned not long after, each carrying strange-looking syringe cases. My brows came together as I watched the doctor take one of the syringes and approach Adriana's bedside.
My stomach dropped as I watched the needle pierce her skin and the clear liquid slowly make its way into her bloodstream. At first, nothing seemed to happen. Adriana's growling continued, and she continued to thrash around on the bed. It was like that for almost five minutes before her growling slowly began to subside, and her thrashing became less intense.
She slowly began to calm down. Her breathing became more steady, her body went limp on the bed. The doctor must have administered a sedative since she wasn't calming down
I watched with longing as Adriana finally drifted off. Her heartbeat was more steady now, I focused my attention to hear it clearly.
The nurses left the room after and the doctor turned off the lights before following them out.
The doctor stepped out, closing the door behind her she turned to find me standing behind her, an expectant look on my face. "Alpha Xander, if you and your grace, can please follow me to my office," she said, her voice polite but firm.
Without hesitation, Daciana and I stood up and followed the doctor down the hallway. We walked in silence.
Once we were seated in her office, the doctor turned to face us. "I understand that this has been a difficult and confusing time for you," she began, her voice softening. "And I apologize for having to ask you to leave the room because of Adriana's behavior. It wasn't safe for either of you."
"What do you mean?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest. "What was wrong with her?"
The doctor hesitated for a moment before replying, "It seems like a normal wolf reaction but we can't be sure for now. She hasn't responded to any of our treatments." I nodded, trying to follow along although it didn't make much sense to me. I made a mental note to speak to Donovan about it. He would surely frustrate me but he had to know something.
"We had to sedate her for now, but we'll need to run some more tests to figure out what's causing this behavior."
"But, will she be okay?" Daciana asked, the lines at the corner of her eyes tightening.
The doctor lips pressed into a thin line, "It's hard to say but the good thing is that she is awake. So we can monitor her reactions more closely, but I can't give you a definite answer this time."
"This is not the answer I wanted to hear. I want to know when she will be back to her normal self." The doctor gave Daciana an apologetic smile.
"Hopefully, everything will be alright. We're doing our best to make sure she is back on her feet soon." Davis wanted to argue but I shook my head. It wasn't going to help. The doctors obviously didn't know any better than we did, at least they were keeping her safe. It was the only posting part of this.
"Thank you, doc." I stood up and offered her a tight lipped smile. I motioned for Dacian to follow me and she stood up dejectedly.
She fell in step beside me as we made our way back to the bench outside Adriana's hospital room. We sat down silence, both lost in our own thoughts.
A familiar tingling in the back of my mind jerked me out of my thoughts. Someone was trying to mind link me.
"Alpha, we just sighted a group of rogues near the east border. What are your orders?" The head of warriors' voices filled my head. It was hilarious hearing that these rogue wolves would dare to come anywhere near my pack. I wasn't in the mood to play games and they sure as hell chose the worst time to try something like that. Fucking dumb wolves.
"Get in position, if they get close don't hesitate attack." I wasn't ready to start a way but if they wanted one, I was sure to give them that.
hell ready
"Noted, alpha."
