As the oppressive silence of the underground corridor pressed down on Briar and Angelo, they felt the weight of their fragmented group’s survival resting squarely on their shoulders.
The path ahead was illuminated by faint, flickering torches that seemed to stretch endlessly into darkness. The air carried a metallic tang, sharp and foreboding, a stark reminder of the Caller’s influence over this unnatural realm.
Briar broke the silence, her voice subdued but firm. “We can’t afford another misstep. Whatever trial lies ahead, we need to be prepared.” Angelo nodded; his expression thoughtful. “The Caller feeds on doubt, on fear.
They’ll throw everything at us to break us apart.” The corridor widened into a vast, cavernous space. The ground beneath them shifted, giving way to a platform that extended over an abyss.
In the center of the chamber, suspended by chains above the void, was a glowing crystalline sphere. It pulsed rhythmically, as if alive, its light refracting in hues of blue and white.
Angelo tightened his grip on his blade, scanning the area. “Another trap.” Briar approached cautiously, her eyes narrowing at the intricate runes etched into the platform’s edge. “No… it’s more than that. This is… a test.” As if on cue, a voice boomed through the chamber, echoing with cold amusement.
The Caller’s presence was undeniable, though their form remained unseen. “You’ve made it this far,” the Caller said, their voice reverberating like a sinister melody. “But progress comes at a cost.
To claim the shard of truth before you, you must sacrifice something of value.” The crystalline sphere began to spin, emitting a haunting hum that sent shivers down their spines.
A second platform emerged from the darkness, carrying Lia and Max, bound and unconscious. Angelo’s breath caught, his instincts screaming to act, but the Caller’s laughter held him in place.
“This is your choice, Angelo,” the Caller continued, their tone mocking. “Save your friends or claim the shard that will lead you closer to freedom. But know this: hesitation seals your fate.
” Angelo’s jaw clenched, his mind racing. He turned to Briar, who met his gaze with unwavering determination. “They’re baiting you,” Briar said urgently. “We have to think this through.
” “They’re going to kill them if we don’t act,” Angelo replied, his voice tight. “I’m not leaving them to die.” As they deliberated, the platform holding Lia and Max began to descend, inching closer to the churning darkness below.
The sphere’s glow intensified, casting long shadows across the cavern walls. Briar’s eyes flicked between the two platforms. “What if… we don’t choose?” she said suddenly, an idea forming in her mind.
“What if we break their game?” Angelo looked at her, skepticism and hope warring on his face. “What are you thinking?” She stepped forward, addressing the void. “You want sacrifice, but we refuse to play by your rules.
We’ll take the shard and save them.” The Caller’s laughter rang out, sharp and cruel. “Bold words, but empty. Do you think defiance will grant you victory?” Without waiting for a response, Briar grabbed Angelo’s hand.
“Trust me.” They sprinted toward the edge of the platform, leaping toward the one holding Lia and Max. The moment their feet hit the surface, the entire structure trembled. Angelo slashed at the chains holding Lia, while Briar focused on Max, cutting through the bindings with swift precision. The Caller’s voice grew louder, angrier.
“Fools! You cannot defy the balance!” With a final strike, Angelo freed Lia, and Briar hauled Max to his feet. The platforms began to crumble, the void below roaring like a living beast.
The crystalline sphere’s hum reached a deafening pitch. “Now!” Briar shouted, pointing to the sphere. Angelo threw a dagger with precision honed by countless battles. The blade struck true, shattering the sphere into a cascade of light.
The chamber shook violently, and the Caller’s scream pierced the air. The platform beneath them gave way, and they plummeted into the abyss. Just as darkness enveloped them, they felt a strange pull, as though an unseen force was guiding their fall.
They landed roughly in a new chamber, the air cooler and still. The four of them gasped for breath, their hearts racing. In the center of the room, the shard of truth floated, untouched, waiting.
Max groaned, rubbing his wrists. “What… the hell just happened?” Lia sat up, her eyes sharp. “We broke their rules.” Angelo approached the shard, his expression wary. “But at what cost?” Briar stepped beside him; her gaze fixed on the shard.
“We’ll find out soon enough.” She reached out, her fingers brushing the shard. A blinding light enveloped them, and the scene shifted once more, plunging them into the next stage of their harrowing journey.
