A sunny afternoon on campus. Celeste is sitting on a bench outside the library, scrolling through her phone, trying to distract herself. She looks up occasionally, watching Angelo and Briar work together at a nearby table.
Celeste sat on the bench, her heart heavy as she watched Angelo and Briar at the table under the large oak tree. They were bent over their project, laughing and sharing ideas, and despite the sunshine, a dark cloud loomed over her. Every smile Briar flashed at Angelo felt like a dagger, twisting deeper into her chest.
She had always known Angelo was passionate about his studies, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that he was slipping away from her. It was like a fog was rolling in, clouding the connection they once had. They had plans, dreams they had built together, but lately, he seemed lost in his own world, captivated by Briar in a way that made her stomach churn.
Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to look away, focusing on her phone instead. But the noise of their laughter seeped through the screen, pulling her attention back. What did she have that I don’t? The thought nagged at her, igniting a simmering jealousy. Briar was new, fresh, and exciting. Celeste couldn’t help but wonder if she had become mundane in comparison.
She scrolled through social media, trying to distract herself, but images of happy couples only made her feel more isolated. Was she not enough for him? The question echoed in her mind, amplifying her insecurities. It was frustrating to watch Angelo become enthralled with someone else while she felt invisible.
Celeste bit her lip, forcing herself to concentrate on the screen. It was ridiculous to feel this way. She should be supportive, right? After all, they were working on a project about identity and self-discovery, something that should bring them closer. But the more she watched, the more her heart ached.
Maybe I’m just being paranoid. She tried to convince herself, but the pit in her stomach wouldn’t go away. What if he’s finding something in Briar that he’s missing with me?
She remembered their conversation at the café. Angelo had seemed distant, lost in thought, and although he had reassured her that he cared, something felt off. She had brushed it aside, but now, watching him interact with Briar, it felt like a confirmation of her fears.
Celeste glanced at the clock on her phone. They had been working together for hours, and she felt a pang of frustration. Why wasn’t he texting me?
With a sigh, she stood up and decided to approach them. She couldn’t just sit back and watch. What if I’m overreacting? She reasoned. Maybe it’s just a project. I should show him I trust him. But as she walked closer, her heart raced with uncertainty.
“Hey!” Celeste called out, forcing a smile as she approached their table. “How’s the project going?”
Angelo looked up, his face lighting up at her presence, but she noticed the way Briar’s smile faltered slightly. Did she notice? Celeste felt a twinge of satisfaction at the thought.
“Hey, Celeste! We’re just brainstorming some ideas,” Angelo replied, his voice warm but with an edge of distraction.
Briar chimed in, her tone friendly yet competitive, “We were just discussing how past experiences shape our identities. It’s been really eye-opening.”
Celeste nodded, but she felt a wave of defensiveness rising within her. “That sounds interesting. I hope you’re not getting too close with Briar. I mean, it’s just a project, right?” She forced a light laugh, trying to mask her discomfort.
Angelo frowned slightly, his brow furrowing. “Of course, it’s just a project. We’re just trying to get it right.”
Why did he seem defensive? The thought made her heart sink. Is he really just trying to get it right? Or is there more?
Briar caught her gaze, her expression unreadable. Celeste felt an unspoken tension in the air, a challenge that made her feel like she had to prove something. “Well, I can help too if you need it. I mean, I’m also interested in identity. It’s something we should all explore together, right?”
Angelo smiled at her, his eyes softening. “That would be great, actually. The more perspectives, the better.”
But as he spoke, Celeste couldn’t shake the feeling that he was more excited about Briar’s input than hers. What if I’m losing him?
“Great! Let me know when you’re working again, and I’ll join,” she said, forcing cheerfulness into her voice.
Briar nodded; her expression friendly but guarded. “Of course! We’d love to have you.”
As Celeste walked away, she couldn’t help but feel the weight of uncertainty pressing down on her. She wanted to trust Angelo, to believe in their relationship, but watching him with Briar felt like watching a train wreck in slow motion. What if he finds something in her that I can’t give him?
Her heart raced as she replayed the moments she had witnessed, the way Briar’s laughter lit up Angelo’s face, the spark in his eyes. What if it’s too late?
Determined to hold onto her relationship, Celeste resolved to confront Angelo later. She needed to know where they stood, and she wouldn’t let Briar come between them without a fight. I won’t lose him without a fight.
