Lia pov
Lia had always been the most reserved of the group, holding her emotions close, a wall of stoicism that hid the turbulence within. But beneath that calm exterior, fear was starting to gnaw at her. She had witnessed so much pain, so much loss, and though she had always tried to focus on the mission, her resolve was cracking.
The trial had thrown her into a whirlwind of contradictions. One moment, she was sure they could defeat the Caller and break the curse. The next, she questioned whether any of this would ever end. What if they were all just pawns in the Caller’s twisted game, destined to repeat the same cycle of suffering?
And then there was Angelo. She couldn’t deny the connection she felt with him, even if it terrified her. She had always prided herself on keeping her distance, but his grief, his determination—it drew her in. And that only made it worse. If they survived, what kind of life would they lead? Could she trust him, or would he betray them in the end?
As the group moved forward, each step was heavy with the weight of their internal battles. The trial, the curse, the Caller—all of it was designed to strip them bare, to force them to confront their deepest fears, regrets, and desires. And in this dark, twisted labyrinth, it wasn’t just the external dangers they had to fear. It was the battles raging within themselves that threatened to tear them apart.
They were no longer just fighting to survive. They were fighting to hold on to who they were—and who they could become.
As the group stands in the heart of the chamber, the weight of their choices pressing down on them, the sands in the hourglass continue to fall.
Time feels like it’s slipping away—each grain a symbol of the moment they can never get back, each passing second a reminder of the consequences of their actions.
Briar looks at the others, seeing the weariness in their eyes, the uncertainty in their faces.
The silence stretches on, heavy and oppressive. It’s clear to her that this isn’t just a physical trial; it’s a test of their spirits, of who they are and what they’re willing to sacrifice.
“What now?” Max’s voice is barely above a whisper, but it cuts through the tension in the room.
Angelo clenches his fists, his eyes dark with frustration. “We need to face what we fear. But I’m not sure I can trust what’s ahead. This... this is a game. They’re not telling us everything.”
Lia, her face pale but resolute, steps forward. “We have to move forward. We’ve come this far. Running now would be pointless.”
Elena’s gaze flickers to the hourglass, the sand slipping faster and faster.
“We need to figure out how to stop it,” she says, her voice hard with determination.
Briar stares at the pedestal, as if searching for a hidden clue.
“The sands are falling, but the hourglass hasn’t tipped yet. We still have time. Maybe the key is in the balance. Maybe we need to stop the sand from falling altogether.”
Suddenly, a voice, faint but clear, echoes through the chamber. “Balance must be tipped. One life, one sacrifice.”
The group turns, startled by the voice’s sudden intrusion.
The air grows thicker, colder, as if the chamber itself is reacting to the words.
“We don’t have time for riddles,” Angelo growls, but even he can sense the truth in the words.
Briar’s mind races. “What if... what if we’re not supposed to stop the hourglass? What if we have to let it run its course? To make the sacrifice the Caller wants, but not on our terms?”
Max frowns. “You mean—sacrifice one of us?”
“Not necessarily,”
Briar replies, her voice firm with a newfound resolve. “It’s not about who, but what. We’ve been tested time and time again. It’s time to prove we understand what we’ve been through.”
Elena looks at her, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. “Are you sure this is the right way?”
Briar glances at each of them, her heart heavy with the weight of what they must face.
“The only way forward is together. If we let the sands fall, and let go of our fears, we may just pass the trial. But it means we have to face our demons head-on.”
The tension in the room shifts. Each of them knows this trial is more than just about surviving—it’s about confronting the past, the choices they’ve made, and their deepest desires. And for Briar, that means looking into the abyss of what she has to lose.
They stand there in silence, knowing that every moment they hesitate could cost them. They know that what lies ahead will either break them or make them stronger.
The sands continue to fall, the air thick with the weight of the trial, and the group knows this is their moment. But what will they choose?
