chapter 45 "The Truth Beckons

Celeste’s POV:

Later that evening, as Briar and I pored over the symbols in the book, I felt a growing unease. The symbols seemed familiar, like echoes from a dream I couldn’t quite grasp.

“Do you think any of these have meaning to us?” Briar asked, her brow furrowed in concentration.

“I don’t know,” I replied slowly, tracing one of the symbols with my finger. “But they feel… significant. Like they’re tied to us in some way.”

Suddenly, my phone buzzed with a message. I glanced at the screen, my stomach dropping. It was from an unknown number.

“Briar, look at this!” I exclaimed, showing her the screen.

It read: “You’re getting closer to the truth. But remember, some secrets are meant to stay buried.”

Setting: The tension within the group escalates as they gather for their research session, each person grappling with their emotions and the implications of their discoveries. The atmosphere is charged with uncertainty as they dig deeper into their past lives and the mysteries surrounding the caller.

Briar’s POV:

The following evening, we all reconvened at Lia’s house, armed with notes and findings from our research. I could feel the weight of anticipation in the air, each of us silently aware of the stakes. The faint smell of popcorn wafted through the air, a failed attempt to lighten the mood.

“Okay, let’s start with what we found,” Lia suggested, trying to break the silence. “Briar, you and Celeste looked into the symbols, right?”

“Yes,” I replied, taking a deep breath to steady myself. “Most of them are linked to protection spells and binding rituals. They seem to be a part of the history surrounding our past lives.”

“That makes sense,” Celeste added. “It could explain why the caller is trying to manipulate us; they want to break that bond.”

Angelo leaned forward; his eyes narrowed in focus. “And the names we found?”

“Some of them were tied to people who lived in the same area as us in our past lives,” Lia interjected. “They were involved in… well, conflicts that ended badly. There’s a pattern of betrayal and loss.”

Angelo’s POV:

As the discussion continued, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. The more we uncovered, the more the tension in the room grew, especially between Briar and me. Every time I caught her gaze, I felt a rush of emotions—fear, hope, and an inexplicable connection.

“Guys, we need to be careful,” I said, breaking the flow of conversation. “The caller is watching us. They’re not going to just sit back and let us figure this out.”

“Maybe we should involve someone else,” Celeste suggested, glancing around the group. “Someone who can help us navigate this. Mrs. Amato might know more than she’s letting on.”

“I don’t know,” Briar replied, her voice trembling slightly. “What if she’s part of this? What if we can’t trust her?”

“Then we’ll figure that out when the time comes,” I urged. “But we can’t face this alone.”

Lia nodded; her expression serious. “Okay, let’s keep that in mind. For now, we should stick to our research and try to connect the dots.”

Celeste’s POV:

As we moved into deeper research, I felt a growing sense of urgency. The symbols and names we uncovered seemed to weave a tapestry of our past lives, filled with betrayal and unresolved conflicts.

“Look at this,” I said, flipping through the pages of the ancient book we had found. “This symbol represents a bond that was broken. It’s almost like a warning.”

Briar leaned in closer, her brow furrowed. “Could it be that the caller is trying to exploit those broken bonds? Maybe they want to force us into repeating the past.”

I exchanged glances with Angelo, who looked troubled. “If that’s true, then we need to figure out what caused those bonds to break in the first place.”

“Let’s go back to the names we found,” Lia suggested. “Maybe we can find out more about them, who they were and what happened to them.”

Briar’s POV:

As we dove deeper into the history, the tension thickened, creating an almost palpable energy in the room. My heart raced with each revelation, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were being watched.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed with a message. I glanced at the screen and felt my stomach drop.

“Guys, it’s from the caller,” I said, my voice shaking.

“What does it say?” Celeste asked, her eyes wide.

“You think you’re getting closer, but the truth is far more sinister. If you want to know, meet me at the old mill tonight. Alone.”

The room fell silent as the weight of the message sank in.

“No way,” Angelo said, shaking his head. “We’re not doing that.”

“But we can’t ignore it,” I insisted, my pulse racing. “This could be our chance to finally confront them and get answers.”

“Briar, this is dangerous,” Lia warned. “We don’t know what they’re capable of.”

“I have to go,” I said, determination setting in. “I have to know who they are and what they want.”

Angelo’s POV:

I could feel the panic rising in my chest as Briar made her decision. I didn’t want her to go alone, but I knew arguing wouldn’t help.

“Then we go together,” I declared, my voice firm. “If you’re facing this caller, I’m not letting you do it without me.”

Briar opened her mouth to protest, but I interrupted her. “We’re in this together, remember? You’re not alone in this fight.”

She looked at me, and in that moment, I saw a flicker of gratitude mixed with fear. “Okay,” she finally relented, her voice barely above a whisper.

The others nodded in agreement, rallying behind us.

“Let’s prepare,” Lia said, her determination shining through. “We’ll need to be ready for anything.”
