chapter 23 Opening New Doors"

Setting: Angelo’s apartment, cozy and dimly lit. The faint sound of music plays in the background as they sit on the couch together, surrounded by textbooks and empty coffee cups.

Angelo ran a hand through his hair, glancing over at Celeste. She looked beautiful, even in her comfy oversized sweater and leggings, but there was a tension in the air that he couldn’t ignore.

“Celeste,” he began hesitantly, “I wanted to talk to you about something.”

She turned to him, her expression shifting from curiosity to concern. “Sure. What’s on your mind?”

Angelo took a deep breath, his thoughts drifting to Elena. “You know how we’ve been kind of distant lately? I think part of it is… well, I’ve been running into my ex, Elena, a lot more than I expected.”

Celeste’s brow furrowed slightly. “Oh. I didn’t realize you were still in touch with her.”

“Not intentionally,” he replied, his tone light but heavy with unspoken emotions. “It’s just that we have a few mutual friends, and she’s popped up here and there. She’s nice, and we share a lot of memories, but it’s complicated.”

Celeste nodded, her eyes watching him closely. “What’s complicated about it?”

Angelo hesitated, weighing his words. “I guess it’s hard to move on from someone you cared about. Even if I’m with you, there’s a part of me that still remembers the good times we had. But that doesn’t mean I want to go back to her.”

“Do you still have feelings for her?” Celeste asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

“No,” he said firmly, meeting her gaze. “I mean, I don’t think so. It’s just… sometimes I miss the comfort we had. But that’s different from wanting to be with her. I’m happy with you, I really am. I just wish I could figure out why I feel so lost sometimes.”

Celeste bit her lip, processing his words. “I get it. Breakups are hard. But I hope you know that you can talk to me about it. You don’t have to carry that weight alone.”

“Thanks, Celeste,” Angelo said, his heart warming at her understanding. “And it’s not just Elena. I’ve been hanging out with Lila a lot too. She’s really great and has this infectious energy. It’s nice to have someone new to talk to.”

Celeste’s expression shifted slightly, a flicker of jealousy crossing her face. “Lila? I’ve heard about her. Is she someone you want to be close with?”

Angelo noticed the change in her tone. “It’s nothing like that. She’s just a friend. I feel like she understands me in ways that I haven’t felt in a long time. We’ve been working on some projects together, and it’s just refreshing to have someone who can relate to my struggles.”

Celeste nodded, but her eyes held a hint of worry. “I just want to make sure you’re okay, you know? It feels like there’s a lot going on in your life right now, and I don’t want to lose you to anyone else.”

“You won’t lose me,” he reassured her, reaching out to take her hand. “I care about you, Celeste. You’re my priority. I just… need to navigate these feelings and friendships. I want you to be part of that.”

Celeste squeezed his hand, her expression softening. “I just need to know that I’m still important to you, especially with everything changing.”

“You are,” Angelo said firmly, his gaze locked onto hers. “You’re the most important person in my life. I don’t want you to ever doubt that.”

Celeste smiled, relief washing over her. “Okay. Just promise me you’ll keep communicating, even if it’s tough. I don’t want secrets between us.”

“Promise,” Angelo said, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. “Thank you for understanding. I’ll do my best.”

They shared a moment of silence, the warmth of their connection filling the space between them. Angelo felt grateful to have Celeste in his life, even amidst the confusion surrounding his past and present.
