Rough edge

Rough edge

The estate was eerily quiet in the aftermath, a silence so heavy it pressed against my chest with every breath. The rain had stopped, leaving puddles reflecting the shattered windows and scorched walls like fractured mirrors. Damian lay on the marble floor of the main hall, blood soaking through his shirt, but his eyes found mine the instant I knelt beside him.

“I should have never—” he began, voice rough and ragged, but I cut him off.

“Don’t speak,” I said, pressing my hands to the wound on his shoulder, feeling the tremor that ran through him. “Just hold on. Please, Damian. Stay with me.”

His lips curved into a faint, pained smile. “I promised… didn’t I? You’re mine. Nothing… nothing will take you from me.”

The weight of those words pressed on me, strange and terrifying. I knew it was more than obsession—it was a declaration, an admission of how dangerously entwined our lives had become. And for the first time, I allowed myself to fully feel it: the fear, the exhilaration, the undeniable pull toward a man who had haunted every corner of my life, now lying broken yet unyielding in front of me.

The medics arrived moments later, summoned by Damian’s guards who had finally secured the estate. I watched them work, my hands never leaving his, as he was lifted onto a stretcher. Every motion, every order he barked, every protective glance he threw at me reminded me how much of himself he had poured into keeping me safe. And the reality hit me hard: the man I had resisted, feared, and despised was my anchor in the chaos that had consumed both of us.

Once stabilized, Damian was moved to the private wing of the estate, a room that overlooked the gardens, broken glass still scattered like diamonds in the moonlight. I stayed with him, refusing to leave his side, my fingers brushing the damp strands of hair from his forehead. His breathing was steady but shallow, eyes closing intermittently as he drifted between consciousness and exhaustion.

“You’re… you’re stubborn,” he murmured when his eyes fluttered open. “Even in the face of death… you stay.”

I laughed softly, a trembling, shaky sound that betrayed my fear. “And you? You throw yourself between me and a bullet. Again. Every time. How are you still standing?”

His lips twitched into a ghost of a smile. “Because… I can’t let anything take you from me. Not Carrow, not anyone. You’re mine, Mara. In ways you’ve barely begun to understand.”

The room was thick with unspoken truths, confessions we hadn’t dared voice. For the first time in months, the walls between us were down—not entirely, but enough. Damian’s obsession, his controlling nature, his dangerous intensity—it was terrifying. And yet, it was the same force that had kept me alive, kept me tethered to a man who had become both my captor and my protector.

I brushed my lips against his temple, an instinctive gesture, feeling the heat of his skin beneath my fingers. “I… I can’t imagine my life without you,” I admitted, voice barely above a whisper. “Even when I wanted to hate you… I never could.”

His fingers twined with mine, weak but purposeful, holding me like a lifeline. “You don’t have to,” he murmured, eyes locking on mine with the intensity that had drawn me to him from the very first night. “Because you never were meant to leave. You’re mine. Always.”

And in that moment, fear and desire collided, a storm as fierce as the one that had ravaged the estate earlier. I felt the pull of him, the danger, the darkness that had become our world—but I also felt the undeniable truth: love, in its most twisted, dangerous form, had claimed us both.

As the night stretched on, I stayed by his side, tending to him, tracing the scars on his arms, his back, the ones he never spoke of. Each mark was a story, a fragment of the man who had taken my life, my freedom, and remade them into something I didn’t fully understand but couldn’t escape.

Outside, the first light of dawn began to pierce through the storm clouds, painting the estate in shades of gold and gray. For the first time, the destruction seemed almost beautiful, a testament to survival, to the bond forged in fire and blood.

Damian stirred, voice husky with exhaustion and emotion. “When you wake tomorrow,” he whispered, “you’ll see… everything’s changed. The world we knew… it’s gone. But you… we… we endure. Together.”

I leaned closer, forehead resting against his, feeling the heat of his breath, the rapid beat of his heart against mine. “Then we endure,” I repeated, voice firm, trembling with relief and raw emotion. “Together.”

And in that quiet, fractured sanctuary, with the storm passed but its echoes still lingering, I realized the truth that had always been there: we were unstoppable when bound together, dangerous when divided, and the darkness that had nearly consumed us had instead forged an unbreakable bond.

Because no matter the chaos, no matter the blood, no matter the danger still lingering in the shadows of our empire, one truth remained. Damian Hale and Mara Ellis—captive, captor, lover, partner—were inseparable.

And the world, fragile as it was, would have to reckon with us.
