I shot up from the couch, heart still pulsing as I gathered my bearings from that toe-curling orgasm. I had to drag my mind back into the cabin, back from swimming into indecent thoughts about Declan as another series of pounding on the door echoed.
“Open this door!” the man on the other side growled. He sounded mad as hell, agitated even. I was still processing what he said earlier when he started kicking the door. This cabin had been up for some time and won’t stand long against an angry werewolf’s tantrums.
Groaning, I stomped towards the door, pulling it open, and shoved whoever was behind it without another thought. My intruder flew across the lawn, quickly steadying himself by clawing his hand on the ground.
His boots and hand drew a long line on my lawn. My eyes narrowed to slits at the mess he made on the perfect green front view of the cabin.
He was an unmated werewolf, barely standing five feet tall, wearing a flannel shirt, denim jeans, and a cowboy hat, his eyes glowing bright silver as he stood up and peered at me.
“Who the hell are you?” I fired, crossing my arms in my middle.
His smoldering eyes licked the length of my legs, crawling up into my torso, settling on my breast. I had no bra under this satin top, but I’m not apologetic about it. He was the one who invaded my privacy in the first place.
If he expects me to be coerced by that look, he’s in for a setback. That look annoyed me even more.
“I’m going to have you,” he grunted and sprinted to eliminate the distance between us.
He gave me no time to process what he said, instead, he showed me what he wanted to happen. In two seconds, he was in front of me, jumping at me like a man who had just escaped famine and saw his first crumble of food.
Confusion spiralled down my spine, but I had to protect myself from his attack. I sprinted to the side as I shoved him away from me. He landed on the other side of the porch, his face remained hungry and determined.
“You’re trying to overpower the wrong girl,” I murmured as I walked to the lawn. The grass was cold against my bare feet, and the cool wind of the morning caressed my skin. I welcome the cold, because this man was making my blood boil.
Not hearing anything I said, he rushed towards me again, aiming to capture me in his arms.
Extremely frustrated, I countered his attack with an offense of my own. I darted from the lawn, meeting him mid-air with a punch on his forehead.
He flew towards the cabin, the porch breaking at his weight as he fell on it, as his cowboy hat flew to the ground. My sight tunneled at the damage he had done to my cabin. I hate it when anyone breaks things in my place.
Determination and annoyance oozed out of me as I went to his slumped body on the porch.
“You.” I crouched down on his side, gripping his hair as I forced him to look at me. “What the hell is wrong with you? You got a death wish?”
He blinked the stars twinkling around his head, staring at me as if seeing me for the first time. “What? Who are you? What am I doing here?”
If he thought acting dumb would lessen my anger, he’s damn wrong. He knocked on my door at the wrong time. I was having a ‘me time’ for fuck’s sake!
My grip on his hair tightened. He winced, hissing in pain. “You tell me, dumbass. You weren’t supposed to be here. No one was supposed to find this place!”
I chose this cabin as a safe house for a reason. It was isolated from the town’s people. It was high up in the mountains where I could have peace of mind when I needed to think.
He gaped at me like an innocent kid. Then a gust of wind swept by the cabin. It was like a switch had been flipped on him, then silver swirled in his eyes again. He motioned to stand, but I pushed him down with a hand on his head and a knee on his chest.
“You’re not destroying any more of my cabin,” I growled, securing him down.
“I need to mark you,” he murmured, his wolf clawing out of his cage.
“Control your wolf. I won’t be this lenient once he comes out,” I warned him.
He kept shaking his head, an inner battle taking place inside his mind. “What’s happening? Your scent… it makes me dizzy.”
I glowered at him. “What do you mean?”
He blinked, forcing his wolf to calm down. “I was staying at a friend’s cabin a mile away from here. But your scent, it led me here.”
What he was saying doesn’t make sense, but those eyes, that battle between his wolf and him for control happening inside him, was real.
A rogue’s stench is so strong you couldn’t scent it from a mile away, but no regular wolf smells like that.
“We were having breakfast, then the sweetest smell drifted in the air. There was this urge…” he mulled over his thoughts. “I just knew I had to find it.”
What bullshit is this man talking about? If he was lying, then why was he trying to take control over his wolf, who was stubbornly trying to crawl out?
“Get your wolf under control,” I pressed, trying to figure out what was happening. “Don’t fucking move,” I commanded as I stood up and put distance between us. I had to get my mind to work. I would know a lie when I see one, and he wasn’t lying.
“My wolf,” he murmured, grunting as he sat up, still shaking his head. “He never behaved like this before.” Then he looked at me. “You… what are you?” He made it sound as if something was wrong with me.
Offended, I huffed, “Me? You’re seriously asking me? You’re the one who knocked on my door, remember?”
“I know… I know, but what is that scent? It’s driving my wolf mad crazy.”
Driving his wolf crazy? His voice echoed in my head, reminding me of how I feel whenever I am around Declan. Was it possible that he could smell me like that? But how? I haven’t heard of anything like that before.
The rustling in the treeline grabbed my attention, then three bulky men emerged from different parts of the treeline.
Their eyes were glowing silver, hunger rolling off them. They looked at me as if I were the last tiramisu on the buffet table.
If I didn’t believe what this guy was blabbering before, I am quickly changing my mind now.
