Push beyond limits

Push beyond limits
The training ground in Lena’s realm was wreathed in shadow and ash, the scarred earth still bearing marks of Kaelith’s countless battles. Erin stood in the center, chest rising and falling in uneven breaths, sweat dripping down her temple. The storm flickered faintly around her — lightning crawling along her arms like restless serpents, her wolf growling low beneath her skin.

Kaelith circled her like a predator. His eyes were sharp as blades, voice a whip.
“Again. Merge them — or you’ll never control it. Right now, you’re half a wolf, half a storm, and nothing whole.”

Erin bared her teeth. “I am trying!” The storm flared, a crack of thunder splitting the air, but it slipped out of her grasp, uncontrolled. Her knees nearly buckled from the backlash.

Lena, leaning lazily against a jagged stone, flicked her hand to steady Erin before she collapsed. Her crimson eyes glimmered with something between pride and mischief.
“Careful, pup. You’re starting to fry yourself. I don’t want to explain to Marcia how I let you burn into ashes.”

Erin shot her a glare, panting. “Not helping.”

Kaelith’s growl cut through the air. “The storm obeys no weakness. And neither does the wolf. If you can’t make them one, then you’ll break in half. Choose which half dies.”

He lunged without warning, claws flashing. Erin’s wolf reacted first — she shifted partially, fur bristling along her arms as she met his strike. But lightning surged at the same time, wild and unpredictable, arcing past him and scorching the earth.

“Sloppy!” Kaelith snarled, striking her shoulder hard enough to send her sprawling. “You’re fighting with yourself instead of with me.”

Erin’s chest heaved. Frustration, anger, and raw power all coiled together until she thought she’d explode. She dug her claws into the ground, pushed to her feet, and screamed as she let the storm flood through her veins again.

This time, Lena moved — stepping into the fray, her hand slicing the air to redirect Erin’s lightning toward Kaelith. “Focus, little wolf. Don’t release it. Channel it. Let it bleed into your claws, your teeth — let it become you.”

Her voice was sharp but steady, pulling Erin back from the chaos.

Erin closed her eyes for a heartbeat. She felt her wolf’s growl vibrating in her bones, the storm pulsing in every vein. Instead of letting them clash, she forced them to overlap — to merge. Her claws shimmered with lightning. Her breath came out in sparks.

Kaelith’s eyes lit with fierce approval. “Better. Now fight me!”

The clash was brutal. Erin struck with storm-charged claws, faster and harder than before, her wolf instincts sharpened by the storm’s rage. Kaelith countered with devastating precision, testing every weakness.

She was thrown down, again and again, but each time she rose faster, stronger, the lightning crawling more naturally across her fur and flesh.

Finally, she landed a strike — her clawed hand wreathed in stormfire tearing across Kaelith’s chest, forcing the ancient warlord to stumble back a single step.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Kaelith’s lips curved into something rare — the ghost of a smile.
“Now you begin to look like someone who can survive.”

Erin collapsed to her knees, trembling from exhaustion, but there was triumph burning in her eyes.

Lena crouched beside her, brushing a loose strand of hair from Erin’s damp face with mock gentleness.
“Not bad, pup. Almost makes me think you won’t die in the first five minutes of a real war.”

Despite the ache in her body, Erin managed a shaky laugh. “Coming from you, I’ll take that as the highest praise.”

Erin had barely collapsed onto her bed after another exhausting round with Kaelith when her door creaked open. She sat up groggily, expecting Lena with her usual smirk and sarcastic quips.

Instead, it was Zara.

“Zara?!” Erin blinked, rubbing her eyes. “How in the world did you even—”

Zara grinned, sliding inside with the stealth of the hunter she was. “Slipping past demons isn’t as hard as they think. You’d be surprised how lazy the patrols get when they think no one’s crazy enough to sneak in here.”

Erin gaped, then let out a laugh. “Of course you would.” But the laugh faded as she noticed the faint glow of a fresh mark etched on Zara’s neck — intricate, dark, undeniably demonic. Her jaw dropped. “Wait. Wait, wait, wait. What is that?!”

Zara’s smirk widened, and she tilted her head, almost proudly. “Oh, this? Just a little souvenir. Lena decided she didn’t want me wandering too far.”

Erin’s eyes nearly popped out of her head. “LENA. MARKED. YOU?!”

Before Zara could reply, a familiar voice drawled from the doorway.
“She did, and I have no regrets.”

Lena strolled in, perfectly composed, crimson eyes gleaming with mischief. “Surprised, pup?”

Erin slapped a hand over her mouth, trying — and failing — to suppress the grin stretching her face. Then she burst out laughing, pointing between the two of them.
“Oh my god. You actually went through with it. Zara, you got claimed by the Demon Princess herself! And Lena—” she wheezed, “—you’re soft. Completely, hopelessly soft!”

Lena arched a brow, feigning offense, but the corner of her mouth twitched. “Soft? I’ll have you know I’m feared across realms. Entire battalions tremble when they hear my name.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Erin teased mercilessly, “and yet one mortal hunter bats her eyelashes and suddenly you’re branding her like she’s your favorite toy. Admit it, Lena. You’re whipped. You are hopelessly in love with my friend.”

Zara snorted, crossing her arms smugly. “She totally is.”

For once, Lena was the one flustered, color rising faintly in her cheeks. She shot Erin a glare that was half-deadly, half-embarrassed. “Keep talking, pup, and I’ll throw you back into Kaelith’s ring without supper. Try me if you want to.”

Erin just grinned wider. “ It was totally worth it.”

The room filled with laughter — Zara’s bright and mischievous, Erin’s teasing, and Lena’s low growl that couldn’t quite hide the warmth beneath it. For a moment, the looming war and training vanished, replaced by something softer: family, found in the unlikeliest places.
