Chapter 165 Fulfilment
Chapter 165 Fulfilment
Theron’s Point of View
The sharp ring from my phone woke me up, and I lifted my arms away from my closed eyes, ignoring the mild pain in my forehead. I have always been a light sleeper; I would wake up at the slightest rustle or sound, and it is extremely difficult for me to sleep for long hours.
So, I usually lie down even though I’m awake, and now was no different, except that I was already drifting off to sleep.
I grabbed my phone from the bedside table, rubbing off the rest of the sleep out of my eyes; why won’t this man just give up? Father had constantly been reaching out to me, despite ignoring him for the last four days. He has made it some kind of ritual to call me at least twice a day, morning and night.
“Why do you bother me so much, father?” I grumbled into the phone as I sat upright, my feet searching for the furry flip flops at the sides of the bed. “I was at your residence this morning.” He answered, his tone flat, and reflexively, my eyes darted towards the bedside clock. “You were not home; you haven’t been coming to work as well. So, where the hell are you, Theron?”
“This is 6:02 am. What are you doing, looking around for me?” I threw back his question, and then he sighed deeply. “Unlike you, I don’t have a wife anymore, so there is no reason for me to go back home.”
I had moved into a hotel the same night Eden disappeared into thin air, no communication from her, even though I have called about a thousand times now. She has never been this intentional about putting space between us.
She is pregnant, and alone, she even took snow ball with her.
No one knows where she was, not even Lola, her best friend, or so I assume.
I couldn’t stay home either; it didn’t feel the same without her, and her absence was making me more irrational, impulsive, and I was slowly teetering towards the brink of madness; sleeping in those sheets that were filled with her scent might make it worse.
It feels like withdrawal syndrome, and I didn’t have the luxury of patience to wait until the two weeks she gave me were exhausted.
I am going to find her.
“Let’s meet.” Father’s voice annoyingly interrupted my thoughts.
“No.”
“Please, Theron. Meet me just once.” The words barely finished when I retorted sharply.
“I don’t want to sit down and listen to you defend the actions of your wife and son; there were never any necessary consequences for their actions since they are family.” My fingers ran through my hair from habit. “Please just leave me alone.”
“No, son, it will be different this time, I assure you.” He declared, his voice unwavering. “Just think of it as a final favor towards me, I won’t ask for anything anymore.”
Father was a lot of things, and I have seen him at almost every season of his life; when he was young, growing, and inexperienced.
A man who was just graced with a wife and a child, then he moved from that to even something beyond— a world-renowned doctor. I have seen him speak to various heads of state, address powerful governmental bodies, and never in my life have I ever seen him so ashamed and unable to meet my eyes.
“I spoke to a junior resident in the hospital; her name is Felicia.” I started the conversation, since he couldn’t; he was so eager to meet me, and the very moment he did, he suddenly was unable to speak. “She confessed to swapping the evidence in court, and the one who put something in Eden’s drink; all because her mother threatened.”
Surprisingly, even after giving all the horrific details, he didn’t seem surprised. “I know.” He finally spoke, but my eyes narrowed. “Giselle confessed to me on the day she requested my help to find Thorne.”
As usual, he wasn’t going to do anything about it.
I could charge her to court if I wanted, submit every evidence and witness I have, but I know if Father was involve she would never be convicted, after all, she is his wife—who wouldn’t take their wife’s side?
“Your mother agreed to turning herself in, once I helped her find your brother, and stop you from killing him.” Something in what he said seemed to annoy me greatly.
“Do you think if I wanted Thorne dead, he would still be alive?” My eyebrows raised. “I know where he is being kept in the hospital; I could go back to finish what I started.”
“I didn’t mean it like that.” He answered, sucking in another deep breath. “The thing is, your mother agreed to turn herself in this morning, and as we are speaking, she is with Attorney Wilson at the police station, going through the process together. Thorne, on the other hand, is going to rehab; he did a lot of drugs and alcohol during the period he was away. I figured it could be one of the things that has messed him up.”
I could see the pain in his eyes as he explained.
“I should have done this a long time ago, but I guess I was too blinded by the love of my family that I didn’t notice just how toxic the environment was for you—” He stopped abruptly and then snickered. “Didn’t notice? I actually did, I only turned a blind eye to it, because I thought if you kept forgiving them, I could hold the family together.”
I leaned back, as I assessed him closely, he brought out a document and passed it to me, checking me out suspiciously. I reached for the document, my eyes scanned the cover page, and they quickly darted towards father again.
“Divorce agreement?” curiously, I asked. “Yes,” He nodded gravely. “Your mother and I got divorced this morning as well.”
I flipped through the document, getting to the end of the page where both of their signatures stood boldly.
“You love her, don’t you?” I queried again. “Yes, but I don’t think I can even bear to look at her after everything she has done.” He confessed as he retracted the document from me. “I don’t want to hate her; she is free to come back when she’s gotten her act right, but I will be with her through the trials after which we bid each other goodbye.”
Thick silence lingered in the air, as I watched father’s helpless face, he nodded dryly as if he was trying to encourage himself. “I only ask that you please take back your resignation. I didn’t tender it to the board; I never will, so you can take as much time as you need.” He then pushed his seat back. “Thank you for your time.”
He was about to leave when my voice stopped him. “Father,” he turned towards me. “I will assume the position of Chairman; you can start making preparations for it.”
My phone rang as soon as I got into the car. Why won’t this damned device stop buzzing? I grab my phone from my pocket.
“Dr. Theron, good morning.” I heard Adams' cheerful voice from the other end of the phone. “I have good news, I have successfully located your wife. I sent you some pictures to your email, please kindly check it and let me know if there is anything else you want.”
“Good.” My upper lip curved into a smile. “Never let her out of your sight. I will pay you double what we agreed on initially.”
My fingers swiped through the pictures that were sent to my email, the soft golden hair glowing in the streets as she tried to cross; her brown eyes not looking at anything in particular.
She was as innocent as the first day I met her.
