Chapter 28 The Switch
Waking up in bed, the first person I saw was Carlos. He was sitting on the couch, his eyes on me as if he were waiting for me to wake up.
"Good morning princess." He said with a smile on his face,
Even though he was looking directly at me, I looked around looking at the room to confirm if he is actually talking to me.
Turning my attention to him, he was already walking towards me. "Did you sleep well last night?" He asked once he sat on the bed next to me.
Still, I said nothing. I was confused but mostly scared because I know Carlos and he’s never nice to me. Last night, Carlos left me at the terrace alone, he didn’t talk to me afterwards nor did he even bother coming back to the room. Not that I want him in the room but I just knew he didn’t come because of me. And now at of nowhere he’s being nice…. Something is definitely wrong.
"Yes," I replied trying to make my voice sound as casual as possible
"Good. I brought breakfast for you." He pointed at the tray of food on the center table. "Hungry or not food is served." He added with a bit of laughter in his voice
I glanced at the tray and then at him "Umm…. Why did you bring breakfast for me?" I couldn’t help but ask. It’s unlike him to do that.
"Because you’re my wife and I’m free and able to do all the best things for you." He replied.
That is definitely not true. He’s up to something. He can’t just be this nice to me for no reason at all, can he?
Noticing my shocked look, he asked "Why do you look so shocked? Can’t I do something good for my wife?"
"You can obviously but I just find it a little strange. I mean, last night you were upset and…."
He quickly interjected, "Don’t talk about last night!" He commanded.
I quietly nodded
He smiled and said "Anyways, I’ll leave you to enjoy your meal. Call me when you need me." He plant a kiss on my forehead, stood up and walked out of the room.
While he’s gone, I couldn’t contain the fact that he was being so nice to me after what happened yesterday. It just doesn’t seem right to me.
He’s supposed to be angry, in fact, the normal “him” would have been very upset and I would have been regretting it but here we are right….. it just doesn’t seem right to me.
I took the covers off and walked up to the tray of food when I suddenly heard Carlos yelling from downstairs as if he were not the same man who was happy and all giddy two minutes ago.
Something is really up with him and I have to figure out what it is as soon as possible.
I started with the croissant and walked up to the window looking at the beautiful view. The voice of Carlos yelling increased and I could tell he was really not in a good mood. There is something about him that just feels really off, One minute he’s in a very good mood and the next it’s like an abomination. I don’t seem to understand what’s going on with him but one thing is certain, something is up with him.
I watched him as he walked out of the house and approached the guards. From the look on his face, I could tell that it was a heated conversation. Something must have happened last night or perhaps this morning that is making his very upset but what I don’t understand is how he’s not venting it on me like he normally would.
As I keep looking at him, he must have felt someone staring at him because he looked around and then looked up. Suddenly a smile grazed on his lips and he waved at me.
That does it. Something is up, Carlos doesn’t smile. He’s probably just being nice because he wants something but what exactly can he want from me that would make him pretend to be this nice to me?
I waved back at Carlos then turned away from the window to think about it and make sense of it but nothing just seemed to be making any sense.
What could I possibly have that makes Carlos pretend to be nice to me? I have nothing, absolutely nothing. And even if I did, he is powerful enough to take it without pretending. So why the act?
That question kept echoing in my head, but no matter how hard I thought, I couldn’t come up with a real answer. Nothing made sense.
Just as my thoughts spiraled deeper, the landline rang.
I froze.
It was the first time I had ever heard it ring. I didn’t even think it worked. My heart jumped as I rushed over and picked it up. "Hello?" I said, cautiously waiting for a response but I got none, although I could tell someone was on the other line as I could hear the slow, steady sound of breathing.
"Hello?" I tried again, louder this time but still nothing.
I was just about to hang up when the door flew open. Carlos stepped in. His expression darkened the second he saw me holding the phone.
"Who’s on the phone?" He asked
"I… I don’t know, no one answered" I stammered.
He quickly snatched the phone from my hand and pressed it to his ear, never taking his eyes off me. He didn’t say a word. Just listened as he watched me like I had done something wrong.
Then, without warning, he ended the call and set the phone down.
"Did they say anything to you?" He asked.
"No," I answered quickly.
He stared at me, suspicious, silent as if hr was trying to read my thoughts.
"Whoever it is, I’ll find out," He said coldly. "And if I find out you’ve been in contact with anyone outside this house, you’re going to regret it."
My throat tightened as I gave a small nod.
Without another word, he turned and walked out, leaving a heavy silence behind him and a warning I wouldn’t forget.
