Chapter 25

Alpha Kaye's POV.

The next morning, I went to the conference room to continue the meeting, and it started immediately I walked in.

“Good morning, everyone.” I started, and the guards interrupted us as they brought Anabel in.

“You may excuse us.” I said to the guards, and they retreated from the conference room.

My eyes scanned the faces in the room and settled on Mrs. Brown.

“I believe this pack has gone through a lot in the past few months and is still going through a lot.” I paused to catch my breath.

“But I would not like us to make any rash decisions. Anabel here, has committed no crime.”

“No, Alpha Kaye. She helped a criminal escape, she is definitely a criminal too. And she must face the wrath of her action.” Mrs. Brown gritted as she glared at Anabel.

“Would punishing her bring back Jasper? Why don't we think? Think about the greater good?” My voice was hoarse and steady as my gaze moved from one person to another.

“What do you think we should then, Alpha Kaye?” One of the members asked.

“We should let her go, that's what I think.”

“Never!” The oldest snapped as he thudded his palm hard on the table. “That would never happen. What should happen to the soul of those we lost? Jasper should be dead by now, he should have paid for his crime, but this witch here didn't allow that to happen.” He added.

“That is true, we can't ignore the blood of those that were slain. Especially Ryan, he was a good member of this pack.” Another said, and I shook my head, pitifully.

“Don't even mention that bastard's name.” I retorted.

Murmurs filled the air as the members exchanged confused glances and settled their gaze back on me.

“Yes, you heard me right.”

“Why can you call him that? Is this because he's dead? He did all he could for this pack.”

“Really? Is that how you see it?” I scoffed and took a second of silent in my heart to mourn these ignorant. “You don't see things from my angle.” I continued.

“Why don't you make us see things from your standpoint, then?” Mrs. Brown asked in a more challenging tone that got my blood boiling.

“A note was found in Ryan that day, and it strongly suggests that he was involved with the killing.”

“Pardon my speech, Alpha Kaye.” Mrs. Brown apologized, and I knew her next statement won't be the nicest I've heard from her. “How can you consider him to be such because of a mere letter? If he was truly involved, then why is he dead as well? He would have at least saved himself.”

Agreement murmurs in Mrs. Brown's favor filled the air.

Actually, there was a point in what she said. How come I never thought of that? He wouldn't have involved himself in it and still get killed?

“His fiancée confirmed it to me, I didn't just come to a rash conclusion. Besides, what if he was betrayed by whomever he allied with? It happens.”

“I think Alpha Kaye is right. Ryan had been acting suspicious a few days before the incident. He might actually be involved in this.”

“Then why didn't you charge him for treason?” A lady asked.

“And the person he conspired with?” I asked and they all raised their brows.

“What do you mean by that, Alpha Kaye?” Another asked with his head puked and curiosity clouded his voice.

“If I charge him for treason now, the mastermind behind this would get a higher hand in this game. That would make him the king.”

“You mean Jasper? I'm sure he is the mastermind.”

“That isn't what we came here to talk about today. Let's come back to Anabel's punishment.” Mrs. Brown snorted.

All eyes fell on Anabel. As our eyes met, I felt my heart skip a beat as I was really short of hope to save her.

I turned back to the council.

“What has this council decided to do to Anabel?” I asked in a hoarse and shakily voice.

“I think she should serve some term in the prison.” One suggested.

“That's the best.” I asked almost immediately in a lively voice, and the eyes stared at me in suspicion.

“No.” Mrs. Brown fixed her gaze on me as she spoke. “She deserves to die because she had endangered the life of every single person in this pack the moment she let that criminal escape.” She growled.

I felt like punching on her, but it would only cause more problems.

“Why don't you let us take a vote?” I asked, and they all seemed to second the suggestion.

“If you want Anabel to serve her term in prison, please, raise your hands.” I said, and only few hands flung in the air.

Too little to save my dear Anabel.

“Is she going to die even before I tell her how I feel about her?” I thought as I looked at the hands lifted in disbelief.

“That means this council had decided to have Anabel have a death penalty.” Mrs. Brown's voice said, cutting through my thoughts.

I could feel beads of tears building up in my eyes, I couldn't believe I would be the one to announce the death of the woman I love so dearly.

“Alpha Kaye? We're waiting for you to make the proclaim.” One said.

My eyes met with Anabel's, she was sobbing her beautiful eyes out, slightly shaking her head for me not to make the proclaimed. But this is why I'm the Alpha, this is why they chose me to be their King. To make the right decisions without being bias.

“By 12pm tomorrow, if Jasper is not back to the Pack to serve his punishment. Anabel should take his place, she would be prosecuted.”

I could not face her and left the conference room in a hurry, but I halted as I heard her voice call out to me.

“Alpha Kaye!” She cried out with all her strength.

But I could only tilt my head; I didn't have the courage to face her.

“This would be the last time you hear my voice.”

A tear rolled down my cheek.
