Chapter 13

Alpha Kaye's POV.

My feet staggered back as my eyes darted frantically from one corpse to the other. Instantly, I took a defensive stance, ready to attack whoever it was that did this, but nobody came out.

I howled aloud as I can and sent an announcement through the mind link to all guards.

“Gather in front of the conference room now.”

The guards rushed to the front line of the conference room. They took their stand and seeing the look on my face, they knew something was wrong.

“How did this happen?” I asked with my teeth gritted.

The guards stood still with not sound emerging from them.

“Am I not talking to anyone? What the heck happened here?”

One of the guards stuttered to answer me.

“What do you have to say?” My eyes fixed on him.

“We… don't get what you're...... talking about, Alpha.”

“The dead members of the council, how did it happen under your watch?” I asked and they all looked surprised.

“Who was supposed to be at guard today?”

Two hands raised among the guards, and they walked to the front.

“We were supposed to be at guard.” They chorused.

“So why were you absent here?” I asked as a surge of energy washed down, and I felt my paws coming out.

“We were summoned by the chief guard for an important meeting.”

My eyes fell on the chief guard, “Is that true?”

“Yes, Alpha. It was only a brief meeting, I never thought any of these could have happened.”

My temper somehow softened, I turned to look at the corpses and back to the guards.

“Take care of the corpses. Call their families as well.”

I made to leave but stopped abruptly and looked back at the chief guard.

“Did you suspect anything fishy of recent?”

“No, Alpha.” He said with his gaze on the floor.

“Let me know if you suspect anything.” I said and left for my room.

I walked into my room, I was going to take a nap, but I couldn't help but pace around the room. Not only that, but I kept on pacing around the room, for hours, thinking about what happened.

“How can that happen under my watch?”

“What would the people think about me? What would they call me, incompetent?”

“No! I need to get to the bottom of this.”

A lot of thoughts ran through my mind as I continued pacing around the room. The door opened, grasping my attention at its peak. One of the guards walked in.

“Good morning, Alpha.” He greeted with a bow and his eyes fixed on the floor.

“What is it you want? The chief guard sent you here?”

“No, my Alpha. I came on my own.” He said in a low but firm voice.

I sat on the edge of the bed with my legs crossed.

“What do you want to tell me then?”

“I saw this while I was carrying the corpses out.” He said as he stretched out a letter to me.

I took it from him, my eyes glistened as my eyes scanned the context of the letter.

“What?” I gasped.

I looked at the guard, “Did you read this?”

“No, my Alpha. I only thought it might be useful.”

“Very well then. You can take your leave.”

He bowed and retreated from the room. I picked the letter again and read through the letter. I can hardly believe the context.

“How can an elder of the council be plotting against his pack?”

I wondered hard who it could have been.

I passed a message to the guards that brought the letter through the mind link.

“Meet me at the study area once.”

I grasped the letter and went to the study. After a few minutes, he walked in and stood before me.

“Who did you find this letter on?” I asked with a deep and demanding tone.

“It was Ryan, my Alpha.”

Ryan is the youngest of the council, and he had been always faithful to the pack, how could he betray us?

“You may leave. And if you see anything else you think I should know, don't hesitate to bring it to me.”

“Of course, my Alpha.”

He exited the study room.

I turned the chair and looked out through the window. A little smile of relief played on my lips as the beauty of the girl gazed my eyes. She was back to her farming and this made me happy.

My eyes fell on the letter, and this got me thinking again. Why would Ryan do this?

Was he forced, or is there something I don't know about?

I think I might get an answer if I get to talk to his mate, Alice. They were supposed to be wedded in two months time, I wonder how she would be feeling right now.

I got up and retreated from the house. I got in the car and drove off to Alice's house. On getting there, I met her wailing and crying.

The people consoling her noticed my presence, got up and bowed to me. I waved it off and approached her, I tried to console her.

“I'm sorry for what happened to you. I would want you to get over it soon.”

“We were supposed to get married in two months time, Alpha Kaye.” She said, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“I know. I'm sure there must be some explanation for this.” Her eyes glistened at the sound of my words.

“An explanation? What do you mean?” She sniffed.

“He left something. But I don't think it's something we can discuss with others around.”

She looked at her friends, and they all exited the house.

“What is it you are talking about?” She asked as she readjusted her position.

I brought out the letter from my pocket and handed it to her.

“It was found on his body.” I said as she went through the letter.

Her hands went to her mouth as she gasped, surprised, and more silent tears rolled down her cheeks. She went on her knees.

“I'm sorry, Alpha Kaye. I don't know what came over him. Please, pardon him.”

Of course, I know what he did is treason and is punishable under the Pack's law; if alive, death is the penalty but if dead, burning him with chains and craving his crime on his grave would be the punishment.

“No, Alice. Please, sit up.” I helped her up.

“I didn't come here for that, and I don't intend to charge him with treason.”

“So, why did you come?”

“I need something of greater deed from you.”

“What?” Her voice was clouded with curiosity.

“Do you think Ryan can do that?”

Her eyes! There was something different about it. Something I could not explain, but I intend to find out.
