Chapter 52: Flames of Truth
Chapter 52: Flames of Truth
Tim clung to Jack in Sarah's living room, smoke seeping through the cracked barricades, the distant roar of flames growing, town hall burning, someone screaming inside, sharp and desperate. Jack cradled him, hands gentle on Tim's hurt arm, love fierce after the supplier's man went down. The tied-up thug groaned on the floor, Lisa still breathing slow, Sarah's shotgun steady by the door. Tim's chest tightened, Jack's "not losing you," shop nights, their bond, then the screams cut deeper, smoke thicker, pulling him out.
"We've gotta help," he said, pulling Jack's arm, firm, love steady, chaos calling.
Jack resisted, holding Tim back. "It's too hot, stay," he said, his voice rough, eyes on the tied man, supplier's shadow beaten, but fire new. Tim shook his head, stepping free, shop memories, Jack's grin, their hands.
"No, someone's trapped," he said, grabbing Jack's shirt, tugging him toward the door. Sarah moved, shotgun up.
"Go, I'll hold here," she said, kicking the thug quiet, Lisa safe, house steady, fire loud outside. Jack nodded, slow, love pulling, Tim leading.
"Together," he said, following, their bond tight, getting along in the mess.
They bolted out, smoke stinging, town hall a mile off, flames orange against the night, screams clearer now, "Help!" a man's voice, raw, trapped. Tim ran, Jack close, his arm throbbed, blood dry, but love pushed, shop nights, Jack's "stay," now this, running side by side.
"Who's in there?" Jack asked, breath fast, boots pounding gravel, chaos loud, their hands brushing as they moved.
"Councilman, heard it on the radio," Tim said, coughing, fire growing, bond deepening, getting along, steady in the heat.
They hit the hall's edge, flames licking walls, windows black, smoke pouring, screams inside, weaker now. Tim grabbed a plank from the yard, smashing a low window, glass flew, heat hit, Jack pulled him back, then leaned in.
"Here!" he yelled, voice strong, shop strength, their teamwork, love solid. A man crawled out, councilman, suit torn, coughing blood, Tim dropped the plank, grabbing his arm, Jack the other, pulling together, steady, fire roaring behind.
"Got you," Tim said, his voice firm, Jack's grip tight, bond deep, chaos binding them.
They dragged him clear, collapsing on grass, flames crackled, hall crumbling, councilman gasping.
"Carter, set it," he rasped, smoke black above. Tim's arm stung, Jack's hand on his back, warm, sure.
"You're good," Jack said, soft, shop nights, their hands, now this, love steadying them, getting along easy.
"You too," Tim said, leaning into him, fire chaos, their pull, bond deeper, stronger in the heat. The councilman coughed, alive.
"Thanks," he said, weak, Tim and Jack together, love real, saving him, steady against the blaze.
Jack brushed Tim's hair, gentle, smoke thick, flames loud. "We did it," he said, his voice low, shop grins, their bond, now this, deepening fast. Tim nodded, hand on Jack's chest.
"Yeah, us," he said, love pulling, chaos fading, getting along, steady, fire lighting their tie. Sarah's truck rolled up, dust puffing, she'd followed, shotgun down.
"He'll talk," she said, nodding at the councilman, hall burning, truth out, their bond solid, Tim and Jack close, hands brushing, love deep in the mess.
Meanwhile, Mia crouched in Pete's truck, parked off a back road, state cops swarming Carter's warehouse miles away, lights flashing, chopper gone quiet. Her pics, Carl's blood, Reggie's gun, drugs, aired on TV, supplier's name, Carter Imports, out, riots shaking town. Pete leaned on the dash, radio low.
"Carter's nabbed, state got him," his cop friend crackled, Paul's flip, her proof, ring's drug flow stopping cold. Mia's chest loosened, safe now, hitman dodged.
"It's over?" she asked, braid brushing her cheek, voice steady.
Pete nodded, turning the volume up. "Yeah, Carter's cuffed, drugs seized," he said, grim but sure, town reeling, her pics breaking it, supplier down, ring dead. Mia peeked out, highway calm, no shadows.
"Paul named him, hall's next," she said, Carl dead, drugs stopped, chaos loud but fading, her fight won, town safe, truth hitting hard. The radio buzzed, "Riots slowing, folks shocked," Carter's arrest, state cops in, her pics the spark, drug flow cut, kids and jobs spared, town trembling from it all.
She stepped out, air cool, Pete followed, bat down. "You did it," he said, watching her, warehouse raided, supplier gone, ring's collapse real. Mia nodded, Carl's blood, Reggie's smirk, drugs out, TV airing it, state moving, her proof ending it.
"Yeah, safe now," she said, firm, town reeling, truth raw, hitman lost, her fight bigger, won slow, chaos settling.
"Jack and Tim, they'll hear," Pete said, radio humming, supplier's fall loud, her pics tying it, town breathing, danger gone, truth steady.
Mia leaned on the truck, stars clear, town quieting. "They'll make it," she said, soft, Carter arrested, drugs stopped, ring's web torn, her shots shaking it, state cops cleaning, town hall's dirt next. Pete grabbed his phone.
"Councilman's talking, fire's his," he said, chaos tying back, her proof sealing it, supplier down, town safe, reeling hard.
"Good, truth's out," Mia said, pics aired, ring dead, her fight done, safe at last, town trembling, kids and streets free.
Back near the hall, Tim and Jack sat on the grass, councilman safe, flames dying, smoke thinning, hands brushing, love deep, shop nights, their pull, this chaos binding them.
"We're good," Tim said, leaning into Jack, his arm hurt, Jack's hold steady, getting along, bond strong. Jack nodded, arm around him.
"Always," he said, love real, fire fading, changing them, deepening it. Then Sarah ran up, face pale.
"Secret's out, run or face it," she said, councilman coughing, truth loose, their love bare, Tim tensed, Jack's grip tightening, choice sharp.
Sirens wailed in the distance, coming closer. The fire trucks were finally arriving, though the town hall was nearly consumed by flames. The councilman had stopped coughing and was now sitting up, his face streaked with soot and determination.
"I've been keeping records," he told them, voice hoarse from the smoke. "Everything Carter did, everyone he paid off. It's all backed up online. I sent copies to the state police tonight before Carter's men came for me."
Sarah nodded approvingly. "That's why they tried to burn you with the evidence."
Tim and Jack exchanged glances, understanding flowing between them. This was bigger than just them now. The whole corrupt system was coming down. Carter's drug ring, the dirty officials, all of it exposed in a single night.
"Mia's photos were the beginning," the councilman continued. "But my records will finish it. Nobody walks away from this."
Tim felt Jack's arm tighten around him protectively. They had survived so much together - the supplier's threats, the attack at Sarah's, this fire. Whatever came next, they would face it together.
In the glow of the dying fire, with smoke clearing from the sky, Tim realized something had shifted between them. Through danger and chaos, their bond had only grown stronger. The shop nights, the gentle touches, the fierce protection - it had all led to this moment of clarity.
"Whatever happens next," Jack whispered close to Tim's ear, "we face it together."
Tim nodded, leaning into Jack's warmth. "Together," he agreed, as the first fire truck rounded the corner, red lights cutting through the smoky night.
