Chapter 82 Truth beneath the Silence
The wind continued to howl against the cliffside, but Deborah no longer felt the cold. She stood frozen in front of Luther, her heartbeat echoing louder than the waves crashing below them. Her eyes remained locked onto his, searching, doubting, trying to understand the sudden shift in her collapsing world.
The tension between them didn’t loosen just because of a single revelation… in fact, it tightened, pulling her even deeper into the gravity of him.
Luther stepped closer, slow and careful, as if afraid she might break if he moved too quickly. “You heard me, baby...” he said softly, his voice filled with a sincerity that made her chest ache. “Alaina is my cousin. She’s been beside my family since we were kids.... yes, but there is nothing between us in the way you fear. You don't have to worry about those things, baby. It won't happen.”
Deborah swallowed hard, her voice caught between disbelief and the sting of embarrassment. “Then why…” she murmured, her words tangled as she tried to steady her breathing. “Why didn’t you.......why didn’t you say anything sooner? Why let me think—”
“Because I didn’t know you were thinking that that kind of situations, baby.” Luther answered, his eyes dark yet gentle. “I didn’t know you believed something so far from the truth, I didn't know you believe the media without proper sources. And I couldn’t explain anything when everything around us kept falling apart. The kiss you saw on the summit is not true, it is fake.......it is just a show, someone is always watching us,” His hand lifted hesitantly, brushing the side of her arm with a touch that was barely there. “I wasn’t avoiding you, Deborah, I'm not cheating on you. No one can replace you in my heart, you know....... I was protecting you.”
Her breath trembled as she looked away, trying to regain the walls she once had, but they refused to rise. “Protecting me? From what? From who?” she asked, her voice quiet but heavy, almost pleading.
“Luther… you keep saying the same thing but you never explain. How am I supposed to trust you when all you give me are half-truths and danger?”
Luther’s expression softened, but his jaw tightened as if holding back the weight of the answers he carried. For a long moment he simply stood there, watching her with emotions he rarely showed, regret, longing, fear of losing her.
Then he spoke, his voice lower than the wind but more powerful than any silence between them.
“From my....... family,” he said.
Deborah’s heart dropped. “Your… family?”
He nodded slowly. “From the business, the enemies, the alliances, the betrayals, the media. From people who would use you against me without hesitation. And from the consequences of something I never wanted you to be involved in.” His eyes held hers firmly, with a kind of honesty that felt dangerous on its own. “But it’s already too late, Deborah. They’ve seen you. They know your face. They know you’re important to me… maybe more than I realized. But don't worry, I'm always here to protect you. You don't see me everyday but I have my eyes on you.”
Her breath caught in her throat, the words sinking into her like an anchor pulling her under. “I’m important to you? Even though I pushed you away?” she whispered, barely audible.
Luther didn’t hesitate.... not this time. “Yes,” he answered, stepping closer, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him. “More than you think. More than I intended. More than I can afford.” His hand cupped the side of her face gently, his thumb brushing her cheek with a tenderness she hadn’t felt in months. “And I’m done denying it.”
Deborah exhaled shakily, every part of her caught between wanting to run and wanting to fall into him completely. The confession pulled at her chest, but the fear...... oh, the fear still clawed at her ribs.
“Luther… I don’t know if I can do this,” she whispered, her hands trembling at her sides. “Everything is too much… the chaos, the danger, the lies, the confusion. I don’t know if I’m strong enough to be near you, you know.... kni—”
Luther leaned in, his forehead resting gently against hers, their breaths mingling in the cool air. “You don’t have to be strong alone,” he murmured. “I’ll carry whatever you can’t. I’ll explain everything. I’ll tell you the things I should’ve told you before.” His voice softened even further. “Just don’t..... walk away from me again. Please. You know how much I love you, baby.”
Deborah’s eyes fluttered shut, torn by emotions she couldn’t contain. For the first time, she allowed herself to lean forward.... just a little enough for him to feel her answer without words. Enough for him to know she wasn’t turning away.
A faint, almost relieved smile touched his lips.
“Come with me,” Luther said quietly. “There’s something you need to see. And once you do… everything will make sense.”
Deborah hesitated, fear knotting in her stomach, but the truth was she had already chosen the moment she stepped out of that car. With a slow nod, small, fragile, but real.....she agreed.
Luther’s fingers interlaced with hers as he guided her back toward the car, the warmth of his hand grounding her even as she felt the storm waiting ahead.
But neither of them knew… That storm had already begun.
Because when Deborah’s phone buzzed in her pocket, she glanced down instinctively.
A single message from Caelum flashed across the screen:
\[Where the hell are you?you are not in your office.\]
\[There is news about son of Fundano.\]
Deborah froze.
Luther saw the fear drain the color from her face. “What happened?” he asked sharply, tension immediately snapping through his body.
She swallowed hard before whispering the words that would change everything.
“About......fundano's long lost son.”
And just like that, the world around them shifted again..... this time not because of love, but because of some things waiting for her in the valmere mansion.
