Chapter 22: Waiting for Answers

The late afternoon sun hung low in the sky as Eliza stepped off the bus and walked toward her dorm. The familiar sight of campus usually brought a sense of comfort, but today, it only filled her with dread. Her mind was still swirling with everything that had happened at the literary conference—Professor James, the kiss, the tangled emotions that seemed impossible to sort through. She had thought the time away would help her find clarity, but instead, it had left her feeling even more confused.

As she approached her building, Eliza’s steps slowed when she saw someone waiting near the entrance. Her heart sank as soon as she recognized him—Alex. He was leaning against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes scanning the street until they landed on her. His expression was unreadable, but the tension in his posture was unmistakable.

Eliza felt a lump form in her throat as she approached. She had known this conversation was coming—she had felt the growing distance between them, the strain of her own indecision—but seeing him here, waiting for her, made it all too real.

“Hey,” Alex said softly as she walked up, his voice carrying the weight of everything unsaid.

“Hey,” Eliza replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

For a moment, they stood there in silence, the air between them thick with unspoken tension. Eliza wanted to say something, anything, to ease the heaviness, but the words wouldn’t come. She could feel the weight of her choices pressing down on her, the guilt gnawing at her insides.

“Can we talk?” Alex asked, his tone more serious now.

Eliza swallowed hard and nodded, knowing she couldn’t avoid this any longer. “Yeah. Let’s go inside.”

They made their way up to her dorm room, the silence between them growing more oppressive with each step. Once inside, Eliza closed the door behind them, her nerves fraying as she turned to face Alex. He stood in the center of the room, his arms still crossed, his eyes locked on her with an intensity that made her stomach twist.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” he said quietly, his voice steady but strained. “You’ve been avoiding me. I think we both know why.”

Eliza’s chest tightened, her guilt swelling. “I wasn’t avoiding you,” she lied, though the truth of it was all too obvious. She had been avoiding him—avoiding this conversation—because she didn’t know how to explain what had been happening, both with him and with Professor James.

“Don’t do that,” Alex said, his voice sharp with frustration. “Don’t act like nothing’s going on. You’ve been pulling away from me for weeks, and I’ve tried to be patient, but I can’t do this anymore. I need answers, Eliza. I need to know what’s really going on.”

Eliza’s heart raced, and she felt the walls closing in around her. She had spent so much time burying her emotions, trying to sort through her tangled feelings in silence, that now, faced with Alex’s directness, she didn’t know where to begin.

“I…” She hesitated, searching for the right words. “I’ve been confused, Alex. About a lot of things.”

His eyes narrowed, his frustration simmering just beneath the surface. “What kind of things?”

Eliza felt her throat tighten, her heart pounding in her chest. She had thought about telling him the truth—about Professor James, about the kiss, about the growing tension she had been feeling for weeks—but the words felt too heavy. How could she admit that she had let things go too far? How could she tell him that she didn’t know if her feelings for him were real anymore?

“I don’t know if I’m ready for a relationship right now,” she said finally, her voice trembling. It wasn’t the whole truth, but it was a part of it—a small piece of the confusion that had been gnawing at her for so long.

Alex’s face tightened, the hurt flashing in his eyes. “That’s not what this is about, Eliza, and you know it.” He stepped closer, his voice growing more insistent. “I need to know if there’s someone else. Is there? Is that why you’ve been pulling away?”

Eliza’s breath caught in her throat. There it was—the question she had been dreading. She could feel the truth sitting on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn’t bring herself to say it. If she admitted what had happened with Professor James, it would destroy everything. It would break whatever fragile connection she still had with Alex, and it would make the guilt unbearable.

But the way Alex looked at her, his eyes searching for answers, made it impossible to lie.

“I…” Eliza’s voice cracked, and she looked down at the floor, unable to meet his gaze. “There’s someone I’ve… I’ve been confused about.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and damning.

Alex’s expression darkened, his hands balling into fists at his sides. “Who?” he asked, his voice low and tense.

Eliza felt her heart shatter in her chest. She couldn’t say it. She couldn’t tell him about Professor James, not like this.

“It doesn’t matter,” she said, her voice breaking. “What matters is that I don’t know what I’m feeling anymore. About anything.”

Alex stared at her, the hurt and anger in his eyes intensifying with each passing second. “It matters to me, Eliza,” he said sharply. “If there’s someone else, I deserve to know.”

Eliza shook her head, tears stinging her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I never meant for this to happen. I never meant to hurt you.”

“But you did,” Alex said, his voice cold. “And you’re still not telling me the truth.”

Eliza wiped at her eyes, her heart breaking under the weight of her guilt. She wanted to tell him everything, to come clean about the kiss and the confusion she had been feeling for weeks, but she couldn’t. She wasn’t ready to face the full consequences of her actions—not yet.

“I don’t know how to fix this,” she admitted, her voice barely audible.

Alex let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “Maybe you can’t fix it. Maybe it’s already broken.”

Eliza’s chest tightened, and she felt like she was drowning in the weight of her own emotions. “Alex, please—”

“No,” he interrupted, his voice hard. “I’ve been waiting for answers, Eliza. I’ve been waiting for you to tell me what’s really going on, and you can’t even do that. I don’t know what’s happened between us, but I can’t keep waiting around for you to figure it out.”

Eliza felt the tears spill over, her chest aching with the knowledge that she was losing him—losing everything.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered again, though she knew it wasn’t enough.

Alex shook his head, his jaw clenched tightly. “So am I.”

Without another word, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving Eliza standing there in the silence, her heart shattering into pieces.

The door clicked shut behind him, and Eliza sank to the floor, her hands shaking as the tears finally came in full force. She had been waiting for answers, too—for clarity, for some way to make sense of everything that had happened. But now, sitting in the wreckage of her choices, she realized that the answers she had been searching for were no closer than they had been before.

And now, she had lost Alex—lost the one person who had always been there for her, who had loved her despite all the chaos.

She didn’t know how to move forward from here. All she knew was that the lines she had crossed, the boundaries she had broken, had left her standing alone in the ruins of her own decisions.

And there was no way to undo it.
