Chapter 19: Impulsive Decision
Eliza sat on the edge of her bed, her heart pounding in her chest as she stared at her phone. Alex’s message still blinked on the screen, waiting for her confirmation. She knew she should talk to him—clear the air about everything that had been simmering between them. He deserved that much. But the thought of facing him, of trying to explain the tangled mess of emotions she’d been feeling, made her stomach churn.
Instead, her mind kept drifting back to Professor James’s invitation. The idea of going to the literary conference with him, of spending an entire weekend immersed in her passion for writing while basking in his praise, was intoxicating. It was everything she had ever wanted—validation, recognition, and the chance to be seen as a serious writer. But it was more than that. There was something else simmering beneath the surface, something she couldn’t ignore.
Her pulse quickened as she thought about how close they had come to crossing a line that shouldn’t be crossed. And yet, she couldn’t deny the pull she felt toward him—the way he seemed to see her in a way no one else did. It was dangerous, but part of her was drawn to that danger.
Without fully realizing it, Eliza stood up, pacing back and forth in her room. The pressure of making a decision—about Alex, about Professor James—was suffocating her. She needed to do something, anything, to escape the chaos in her mind.
Impulsively, she grabbed her phone and opened her messages. Her fingers hovered over Alex’s name, but instead, she found herself scrolling down to Professor James’s number. Her heart raced as she typed out a message, her emotions swirling too fast for her to process.
Eliza: I’ve thought about it. I want to go to the conference with you.
Her breath caught in her throat as she hit send. She knew, deep down, that this was more than just a professional decision. It was an emotional one—one that would push the boundaries of their relationship even further. But in that moment, she couldn’t bring herself to care. She was tired of feeling confused, tired of trying to hold everything together. This felt like something she could control, something she could grasp onto, even if it was risky.
Moments later, her phone buzzed with a response.
Professor James: I’m glad to hear that, Eliza. It’ll be a great opportunity for you. I’ll send you the details soon.
Eliza’s stomach twisted with a mix of excitement and guilt. She had made her choice. But it wasn’t just about the conference—it was about him. The reality of what she had just set in motion began to sink in, and with it came a wave of anxiety.
Her phone buzzed again. This time, it was Alex.
Alex: I’m outside your dorm. Ready to talk?
Eliza froze, her mind racing. She had just made a decision to go away with Professor James, but now she had to face Alex. She felt like she was being pulled in two completely different directions, and she had no idea how to reconcile the two.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and stepped outside. Alex stood there, leaning against the railing with his hands in his pockets, his expression serious but calm. He gave her a small smile when he saw her, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes.
“Hey,” Alex said softly, pushing off the railing as he walked toward her. “You ready to talk?”
Eliza nodded, though her heart was pounding in her chest. She wasn’t ready. She didn’t know how to explain what she was feeling, and now that she had made her impulsive decision to go to the conference, the guilt was overwhelming.
They sat down on a bench near the dorm, the cool night air wrapping around them. Alex glanced at her, waiting for her to speak, but Eliza could feel the weight of her decision pressing down on her, making it impossible to find the right words.
“Alex,” she started, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’ve been… confused lately. About a lot of things.”
He nodded, his eyes searching her face. “I know. And I’ve been trying to give you space, but it’s hard, Eliza. I don’t know where I stand with you anymore.”
Eliza felt a lump form in her throat. She wanted to be honest with him, to tell him everything, but the truth felt too heavy. She wasn’t sure if she could admit what was really going on—her growing feelings for Professor James, the connection that had started to blur the lines between professional and personal.
“I care about you,” Eliza said softly, her hands trembling. “But… things have been complicated for me lately. I don’t know if I’m in the right headspace for a relationship right now.”
Alex’s face fell, the hurt flashing in his eyes before he quickly masked it. “Is there someone else?”
The question hit Eliza like a punch to the gut. She hadn’t expected him to be so direct, and the guilt she had been trying to bury surged to the surface. She could feel the truth sitting on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn’t bring herself to say it.
“I—” She hesitated, her heart pounding in her chest. “There’s no one else… not really. I’m just confused.”
Alex looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. “I can’t keep doing this, Eliza. I need to know where we stand. If you’re not ready for something serious, I need to know now.”
Eliza swallowed hard, her chest tightening. She knew she had to make a choice, but the weight of it was suffocating. The words she had said to Professor James, the commitment she had just made, echoed in her mind. She had already taken a step in one direction, but now, faced with Alex’s earnest gaze, she felt like she was betraying him.
“I’m sorry,” Eliza whispered, her voice breaking. “I don’t think I can give you what you want right now.”
Alex’s jaw clenched, and for a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence between them was heavy, filled with all the things Eliza couldn’t say—the confusion, the guilt, the fear that she had already crossed a line with Professor James that she couldn’t come back from.
“Okay,” Alex finally said, his voice tight. “If that’s how you feel.”
Eliza’s heart ached as she watched the hurt flash across his face. She wanted to reach out, to explain everything, but she knew it wouldn’t make things better. It would only complicate them further.
“I hope you figure out what you want,” Alex said quietly, standing up from the bench. “But I can’t wait around forever.”
Eliza nodded, her throat too tight to speak. She watched as he walked away, disappearing into the night, and with each step he took, the weight of her impulsive decision settled deeper into her chest.
She had made her choice. She was going to the conference with Professor James. But as she sat there in the quiet aftermath, the excitement that had once accompanied the thought of the conference was replaced by a deep sense of dread.
There was no turning back now. And whatever came next, Eliza knew it would change everything.
