Chapter 17: Family Secrets
Eliza stood in the middle of the living room, her arms crossed tightly over her chest as she stared at her father. His face was red, his expression tight with frustration, and the tension between them crackled like static in the air. The argument had started over something small—just a remark about her skipping family dinners too often—but it had escalated quickly, spiraling into something neither of them seemed able to control.
“I don’t understand why you’ve been so distant lately, Eliza,” her father snapped, pacing back and forth across the room. “It’s like you’re not even part of this family anymore.”
Eliza clenched her jaw, fighting back the rising tide of frustration. “I’m still part of this family,” she shot back, her voice sharper than she intended. “Just because I have my own life now doesn’t mean I’m abandoning you.”
Her father stopped in his tracks, turning to face her with a hard look in his eyes. “That’s not what this is about, and you know it.”
Eliza’s heart pounded in her chest, the weight of everything she had been carrying pushing her toward the edge. “Then what is it about?” she demanded, her voice rising. “Why can’t you just let me live my life without making me feel guilty for it?”
Her father’s eyes narrowed, and for a moment, he looked like he wanted to say something, something heavy, but he hesitated. The silence that followed was thick and uncomfortable, and Eliza could feel the anger simmering just beneath the surface.
“I’m trying to protect you,” he finally said, his voice quieter but no less intense.
“Protect me from what?” Eliza asked, exasperation dripping from her words. “From living my own life? From making my own choices?”
Her father’s face hardened, and he took a step closer to her. “From making the same mistakes your mother made.”
Eliza froze, her breath catching in her throat. The mention of her mother felt like a slap to the face—an old wound ripped open without warning. Her mother had left when Eliza was just a child, disappearing from their lives without explanation. It was a subject her father almost never brought up, and when he did, it was always with bitterness and anger. But now, his words carried a weight that went beyond the usual frustration, and Eliza could sense that there was something more, something deeper lurking beneath the surface.
“What are you talking about?” Eliza asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Her father looked away, his jaw clenched tightly as if he was struggling with himself. The room was suddenly too quiet, the tension thick enough to cut through. Eliza waited, her heart pounding in her chest, as he finally let out a long breath and turned to face her again.
“There’s a lot about your mother you don’t know,” he said, his voice low and strained. “Things I didn’t want you to know. Things I’ve kept from you.”
Eliza’s stomach twisted with unease. She had always known there was more to her mother’s disappearance than her father had ever told her, but she had never pressed for details. She had assumed it was too painful, that he was protecting both of them from reliving that hurt. But now, standing in the middle of their family cabin, it felt like the past was about to come crashing down around her.
“What things?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Her father ran a hand through his hair, his expression conflicted. “Your mother… she wasn’t the person you think she was, Eliza. She was reckless. Impulsive. She made decisions that hurt people—hurt us.”
Eliza’s chest tightened, her mind racing with questions. “What do you mean? What did she do?”
He hesitated again, the weight of his words hanging in the air like a storm cloud ready to burst. “She had an affair,” he finally said, his voice flat. “Not just once. It went on for years, and it tore us apart.”
Eliza felt like the ground had dropped out from under her. The word affair echoed in her mind, cold and jagged. “What?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Her father looked away, as if he couldn’t bear to meet her eyes. “She wasn’t happy, Eliza. She was always restless, always looking for something more. I didn’t realize it at first—I thought I could fix things, that we could work through it. But she… she didn’t want to stay.”
Eliza’s mind raced, struggling to piece together this new version of her mother. The woman she had always remembered had been distant but kind—a ghost in her memories, always just out of reach. But this? This was something else entirely. The idea of her mother not only leaving but betraying them… it was too much to process.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?” she asked, her voice trembling with hurt and anger. “Why did you let me believe she just left because she didn’t love us?”
Her father’s face softened, the anger and frustration giving way to something sadder, more broken. “I didn’t want you to hate her,” he said quietly. “I didn’t want you to grow up thinking that your mother was a bad person. She wasn’t. She was just… lost.”
Eliza’s eyes filled with tears, her heart aching with the weight of everything she had just learned. “So she didn’t just leave us. She left because she was… with someone else?”
Her father nodded, his gaze still fixed on the floor. “She left because she didn’t want to face the consequences of what she’d done. She couldn’t handle the guilt, so she ran. And I’ve spent all these years trying to make sure you never made the same mistakes.”
Eliza shook her head, her mind reeling. She felt like she didn’t even know who her mother was anymore—this woman who had made choices that had torn their family apart. And now her father, in his own way, had been trying to protect her from that same fate. But it felt suffocating, as if he’d been controlling her life from the shadows without her even realizing it.
“That’s why you’ve been so overprotective?” she asked, her voice strained. “That’s why you’ve always been so hard on me about my choices, about my relationships?”
“I didn’t want you to end up like her,” her father admitted, his voice cracking slightly. “I didn’t want you to fall into the same traps, to lose yourself chasing something that would never make you happy.”
Eliza’s hands shook, the enormity of what she was hearing crashing down on her. Her father had been keeping this secret from her for so long, shaping her life in ways she hadn’t even realized. And now, everything felt upside down—her mother, her father, and even her own choices. It was as if the foundation she had built her life on was crumbling beneath her feet.
“I’m not her,” Eliza said, her voice raw. “I’m not going to make the same mistakes she did.”
“I know that,” her father said softly, stepping closer to her. “But I couldn’t bear the thought of you getting hurt the way I was. I just wanted to protect you.”
Eliza swallowed hard, her emotions a tangled mess of anger, hurt, and confusion. She didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to process the betrayal of secrets long buried.
“I need time,” she whispered, backing toward the door. “I need to think.”
Her father reached out, but she pulled away, the distance between them suddenly feeling too wide to cross. Without another word, Eliza turned and walked out of the cabin, the cool air hitting her like a slap as she stepped outside. Her mind raced, her heart pounding in her chest as she walked aimlessly into the woods, the weight of the secrets she had just uncovered pressing down on her like a heavy burden.
Nothing felt solid anymore. Everything she thought she knew about her family, about herself, was unraveling, and she didn’t know how to stop it. All she could do was keep moving forward, even though she had no idea where she was going or how to make sense of the shattered pieces of her past.
