Chapter 20 The Hope of Finishing the Project

Holding the papers, Emily turned sharply and walked out of the CEO's office. Every step she took screamed confidence and determination.

Patrick just stood there, dumbfounded. He never thought Emily would agree to tackle such a tough job with so much resolve.

"Emily, are you that eager to ditch me?!" Patrick yelled, slamming his hand on the desk, his voice dripping with anger and frustration. But Emily was already gone, not hearing a word he said.

Outside the CEO's office, Emily paused, staring at her old secretary's office. It used to be her workspace, but now it was empty. Shirley was on sick leave, making the place feel even more deserted. Emily couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia.

Just then, an HR staffer walked up to her and said, "Emily, Mr. Rivera wants you to work in the small office next to the meeting room for now." The staffer's tone was polite and respectful, making sure everyone knew this was the CEO's decision, and it wasn't up for debate.

Emily nodded in thanks and headed to the small office. It was tiny but had everything she needed to get the job done. She set down the files and dove right into work, knowing she had no time to waste.

Over the next few days, Emily threw herself into the project. She knew this was her ticket out, so she couldn't afford to slack off. She showed up early every day, diving into research, from academic papers to industry trends, hunting for clues to crack the tech challenges. But the project was way tougher than she had imagined. What seemed like simple problems were actually complex math and deep algorithm issues.

Even with her solid background in AI, Emily felt out of her depth. With Patrick reassigning the company's AI team, she was on her own, and it was exhausting. Every night, she stayed late, working overtime alone in the office.

One afternoon, as her colleagues trickled out, Emily sat there, staring at the code and data on her screen, deep in thought. She tried solution after solution, but nothing worked. Frustration and exhaustion were setting in.

But every time she thought about giving up, she remembered Patrick's cold face and his doubts about her. Those memories pushed her to keep going.

Just as she was lost in her work, her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID, hesitated, and picked up.

"Emily, got time for dinner tonight?" Marlon's gentle voice came through the line.

"No, I've got too much to do here," Emily replied, her throat dry from working all afternoon without a break.

"Don't say no just yet. I heard you're handling the TX1 new intelligent system project, right?"

"How did you know?" Emily asked, surprised.

"I have my ways! But seriously, that project must be a real headache."

"Yeah, it's driving me nuts," Emily admitted.

"Don't sweat it. I set up a meeting for you with Dr. David Garcia from the National Intelligent Systems Development Group. He's a whiz in this field and might have some solid advice for you. You can chat over dinner."

Emily felt a rush of gratitude. "Really? That's awesome! Thanks a ton."

"I'm downstairs at your office now. Hurry up and come down!" Marlon said, sounding indulgent.

"Okay!" Emily grabbed her bag and dashed downstairs, not even caring about her messy hair or the dark circles under her eyes.

When Marlon saw her, looking a bit disheveled and tired, he couldn't help but feel a pang of concern.

Up in the office, Patrick stood by the window, watching Marlon and Emily below. For some reason, it hurt to see them together. Just then, his phone rang. It was David.

"Hey, Mr. Rivera. As you asked, I leaked my schedule to the Hughes Group. Mr. Hughes jumped at the chance to invite me to dinner tonight. What's the next move?"

David was actually one of the project leaders Patrick planned to hire, though it wasn't public yet. They had history from their time abroad; David used to be outperformed by Patrick in the smart tech arena, yet Patrick has since lost his drive to pursue it further..

David thought he was supposed to spy on the competition, feeling a mix of conflict and excitement about playing undercover.

"Answer their questions as you see fit, and help out if needed," Patrick said coolly.

Even though this project was meant to push Emily to her limits, he didn't want her to leave the company. He knew if she left, any chance between them would be gone. But seeing her work herself to the bone, looking worn out, he felt heartache.

David was puzzled. Was the business world really this cooperative now?

Just as Emily and Marlon sat down at the restaurant, David arrived.

David was a middle-aged guy with a simple look but sharp, wise eyes.

Emily and Marlon stood to greet him, and the three of them sat down together.

At the table, Emily laid out the project's background and challenges. David listened intently, then fell into deep thought.

"The TX1 new intelligent system project is tough, but there are solutions," David said seriously. "The key is finding a new algorithm to boost the system's performance."

Emily's eyes lit up. "A new algorithm? Can you explain?"

David nodded and broke down his ideas.

He suggested a new algorithm based on deep learning, which could automatically optimize the system's performance by training on a large dataset.

Emily found it made a lot of sense and decided to try it out as soon as she got back.

They also chatted about various AI and intelligent system topics.

From David and Marlon's conversation, Emily picked up a lot of new insights and perspectives.

David even gave her his contact info, offering further help and support for future projects.

Emily was filled with hope and gratitude. With David's help, she might crack the key technologies faster and finish the project!

"Dr. David Garcia, I can't thank you enough for this!" Emily raised her glass.

David waved it off modestly. "If you want to thank someone, thank Mr. Hughes for setting this up!"

Emily turned to Marlon and smiled.

The three of them clinked glasses, chatting and laughing, ending the meal on a high note.
