MAELIS ARDENT POV

“Thank you,” I said to the waitress as she served our food.

“You’re welcome, just call me if you guys need anything,” she said and smiled at me, and turned to look at Lucien, who was sitting across from me. “Anything,” she said in a very endearing tone and pushed a piece of paper in front of him.

I pressed my lips together and looked at the window as I tried to control my laugh

“Enjoy your meal,” She said before walking away.

“Careful not to choke on your laugh,” Lucien said, glaring at me.

“What?” I asks laughing, “Anything…” I said, mimicking the woman’s voice, when Lucien put his utensils down, which made me laugh as I saw his pissed face. “Sorry,” I said and cleared my throat.

“Crazy,” he said as she shook his head.

He’s that attractive, I bet he had women on the side

“But tell me. Isn’t she pretty? I mean…” I said, and he just ignored me and started eating. “She got some moves. I bet you’re saving that number, huh.” I said when I felt his gaze that made me lift my head.

“Why? Jealous?” He said that made choke my food.

I heard him chuckle at me. I glared at him as he offered me a drink. “You wish,” I said as I drank the water.

“Don’t worry, I only have my eyes on you,” He said.

I felt like the place temperature just turned up that I could feel my cheeks getting hot, as if being heated. I shove a huge piece of burger inside my mouth as I don’t know what to say.

“Stop that, you’ll choke.” He said and reached his head to others' faces.

“W-what are you doing?” I said shock and moved my face away,

“You’re like a kid, you got a sauce on your face.” He said, leaned towards me, and wiped it.

“Oh…thanks,” I said and swallowed.

What the fuck is going on with you, Maelis! Get a grip!

“You don’t like tomatoes?” He said, looking at my plate.

“I’m allergic,” I said.

“Even with lettuce?” he asks,s and I bite my lips in embarrassment.

“No, I just don’t like vegetables.”

AS THE CAR stops in front of a house, I felt sadness. I took a deep breath as I got out of the car, and we both walked up to the door and knocked.

“Lucien,” Gabriel said as soon as he opened the door. “You,” he said, and looked at me.

“Where’s Rye?” I asks and he opens the door wider.

“Ma---” She called,d but beforeshe could finish, I went and hugged her.

“Let’s talk,” I said, and grabbed her walk away from the two men and went inside a room.

“Mae…I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to---” She said,

“Don’t be,” I said and lifted her head to look at me and wipe her tears. “Rye, I know you already made a choice. But, I want you to understand what you're getting yourself into.” I said, and she nodded as we sat at the edge of the bed.

“I know…” She said and took my hand.

“There is no guarantee that everything will be as we expected. We don’t know if this plan will work. Are you ready if…if you have to go back in the same world you tried to run away from before?” I said and smiled.

“Mae, I never thought I would say this. But, yes. Because this time I won’t be alone and I trust Gab, I’d rather go to war with him rather than live without him. He is the light in my life that I once lost, and I can’t lose him again, Mae.” She said as her tear rolled down her cheeks. “He’s my life, and he’s mine. And maybe if this plan will give us the chance…even the smallest chance to live our lives away from all of this, then we are ready to risk it, but we will do it together.” She said and squeezed my hand.

“You really love him,” I said, and she smiled and nodded her head.

“So much, Mae, he’s…he’s a part of me that I can’t live without.” She said, I care for her cheeks and smiled.

“I’m sorry for trying to take him away,” I said. “I’m happy that you’re finally able to find happiness again, Rye. I still remember how we dreamed this, and I’m happy that even just one of us was able to have it. I will do my best to make this work, but you have to promise me that you will be safe, okay?  Live a happy life, do everything that you always dream of, see the world beyond this, and forget all the pain in the past…forget me, forget the Arcana.” I said a tears rolled down my cheeks.

“Mae…” She said and pulled me into a hug and sobbed on my shoulder.

“I wish you the best that this life could offer, you deserve it, Rye,” I said as is carelss her back.

“I love you, Mae,” She said in between her sobs. I smiled.

“I love you too. I’m happy that you found the person who will love you and protect you.” I said and pulled away from her hug.

“I hope the same for you, Mae,” She sai,d and I chuckled, shaking my head.

“Love is not something that I can have; I don’t have a place in my life,” I said, and sighed. “There is no place for love in my world; I could barely do it to myself.”

“Don’t say that,” She said and shook my hand, “You deserve to love and be loved, and I know that you will. You don’t have to find a place for it in your life or world place, it will place itself in it. And it is one of my prayers for you to find it, because I know that you deserve it more than anyone.

“Arcana’s is not allowed to love, and as long as I belong to them, I don’t have the right to myself, not even to my heart. It’s hard to fight the Arcana, that why I’m planning to just join them for the rest of my life.” I joke that made us both laugh. “It is hard to find someone who will be willing run away from all of this, that’s why I’m happy for you, for finding one.”

“Maybe you don’t need the love that will run away with you,” She said, which made me frown a little. “Maybe what you need is the love that will fight with you, a love that will fight for you.”
