Finally Happy
Finally Happy
We filed back into the meeting hall. The tension was suffocating. Every pack member who'd waited outside pushed in. Wanting to hear. Needing to know.
Darian's hand was locked with mine. His grip tight enough to hurt. I didn't care. Needed the anchor. Needed the reminder that whatever came next, we'd face it together.
Theron and Vex stood behind the table. Formal. Official. Their faces still gave nothing away.
"We've reviewed the evidence," Theron began. "Testimony from all parties. The documents. Everything presented."
She paused. Let the silence stretch. Deliberate. Cruel.
"Regarding the petition filed by Celeste Landon to enforce the engagement contract between her family and Darian Voss, we rule as follows."
My heart stopped. The room held its collective breath.
"The original agreement between the Voss and Landon families is acknowledged as legitimate. The debt incurred is real and documented. However." Theron's eyes moved to Marcus's documents. "The specific terms of that debt have been misrepresented. There is no blood oath. No personal collateral. No binding requirement for marriage."
Relief flooded through me. Not complete. Not yet. But something.
"Furthermore," Vex continued, "Celeste Landon's actions in this territory constitute fraud. Staging an attack. Harboring an unauthorized vampire. Spreading false information. These actions nullify any claim she might have had to enforcement of the engagement. She has demonstrated herself to be an unreliable petitioner."
"Therefore," Theron said, "her petition is denied. The engagement between Darian Voss and Celeste Landon is officially dissolved. No marriage requirement exists. No personal obligation remains."
The room erupted. Pack members cheering. Talking. Celebrating. Connor held up his hand for silence. Got it eventually.
"However," Theron's voice cut through the noise. Sharp. Commanding. "The financial debt remains. Darian Voss, you received significant aid from the Landon family. That must be repaid. We're establishing a payment plan. Ten years. With interest. Managed through the High Council to ensure fairness."
"I accept those terms," Darian said immediately. "Whatever amount. Whatever timeline. I'll pay it."
"Good. The Council will send you documentation within the week." Theron's expression softened slightly. Just barely. "Regarding the mate bond and the pregnancy. We find no evidence of manipulation. No evidence of entrapment. The timeline supports your claims. The testimony is consistent. The bond appears genuine."
She looked directly at me. "Lyra, we acknowledge you as Darian Voss's mate. We recognize your pregnancy as legitimate. We support your right to remain together and raise your child as you see fit."
Something broke inside me. Relief so intense it hurt. Tears sprang to my eyes. I couldn't stop them. Didn't try.
"This ruling is final," Vex added. "Documented. Binding. Celeste Landon has no further claim on Darian Voss. Should she attempt to challenge this or interfere again, she'll face formal sanctions from the Council. As will her family."
Theron gathered her documents. "We'll remain tonight. Depart tomorrow. We need to file formal reports. Document everything properly. But the decision stands. You're free to move forward with your lives."
She looked at Connor. "Thank you for your hospitality, Alpha. For your cooperation during this process. Your pack has handled this situation with integrity."
Connor nodded. "Thank you for your fair ruling."
The representatives left the main table. Headed toward the guest quarters Connor had prepared. Leaving us in the hall. Leaving us with the verdict. The freedom. The future.
Pack members surrounded us immediately. Congratulating. Celebrating. Some apologizing for doubting. For believing Celeste. For not trusting sooner.
I barely heard them. Could barely process. Just held onto Darian while the reality sank in.
We won. We actually won. We were free.
Elizabeth pushed through the crowd. Pulled me into a hug. "I told you. I told you it would work out."
"I didn't believe you."
"I know. But I believed enough for both of us."
Marcus appeared next. Grinned at Darian. "Congratulations. You're officially free. And officially broke for the next ten years."
"Worth it," Darian said. "Every coin. Every year. Worth it."
Connor approached last. His expression was warm. Proud. "You did well. Both of you. You fought. You didn't give up. You proved what you are."
"Thank you," I said. "For everything. For believing in us. For supporting us. For—"
"You're family," Connor interrupted. "That's what family does."
The celebration continued around us. Pack members bringing food. Drink. Music starting. Someone suggested a proper bonding ceremony. Making it official in pack tradition. Not just vampire law.
But I was exhausted. Emotionally drained. Overwhelmed by everything. By the win. By the relief. By the knowledge that we'd actually survived.
Darian sensed it through the bond. Pulled me aside. "Let's go. Get some air. Some quiet."
We slipped out while everyone was distracted. Walked toward the edge of the settlement. Toward the forest where we could breathe. Where we could process.
The sun was setting. Painting the sky orange and pink and purple. Beautiful. Perfect. Like the world was celebrating with us.
We sat under a tree. Darian pulled me against his chest. His hand went to my stomach. Rested there. Protective. Possessive. Awed.
"We're really free," I said. "Really together. Really going to be parents."
"Yes. All of it. Everything we fought for."
"I'm terrified."
"Good. Me too. But we'll figure it out. Together. Like we figured out everything else."
I turned to look at him. His gray eyes were soft. Happy. More peaceful than I'd ever seen them.
"I love you," I said.
"I love you too. You and this baby. You're my family now. My future. Everything that matters."
We sat there as darkness fell. As the celebration continued in the distance. As the bond hummed contentment between us.
Everything had changed. The threat was gone. The Council had ruled. We were free to build our life. To prepare for our baby. To actually be together without fear. Without complications. Without doubt.
"We should start planning," Darian said. "For the baby. We need supplies."
"One thing at a time. Right now I just want to sit here. With you. And process the fact that we actually won."
"Fair enough."
We stayed until the stars came out. Until the celebration quieted. Until we were ready to face people again. To accept congratulations. To plan our future.
When we finally stood and walked back, Darian stopped. Pulled me close. Kissed me. Soft. Sweet. Full of promise.
"Ready to go be parents?" he asked.
"Not even a little bit."
"Perfect. Neither am I. We'll be terrible at it together."
I laughed. Actually laughed. For the first time in weeks. "That's the most romantic thing you've ever said."
"I'm full of romantic things. Just wait until the baby keeps us up all night and we're both exhausted and covered in various fluids. I'll be incredibly romantic then."
"I can't wait."
And I meant it. Couldn't wait to be exhausted. Couldn't wait to be covered in baby fluid. Couldn't wait to build this messy, imperfect, beautiful life together.
We walked back hand in hand. Toward the celebration. Toward our pack. Toward our future. Together. Finally. Completely. Free.
The war was over. The battle won. The threat eliminated. Now came the good part. The part where we actually got to be happy. Got to be family. Got to focus on the baby growing inside me instead of fighting for the right to exist.
Seven months until the baby arrived. Seven months to prepare. To build a home. To figure out how to be parents. To actually live instead of just survive.
It felt like forever. Felt like not nearly enough time.
But we'd figure it out, just like he had said: together. I was finally happy and certain that we loved each other.
What else could I ask for?
THE END.
