We spent the next two days preparing. Connor and Lucien organized witnesses. Marcus reviewed the documents. Elizabeth and Elara helped me practice my testimony. Everyone had a role. Everyone had a part to play.
But at night, Darian and I stayed at Elizabeth's house. In the guest room. Together but not really together. Still too much between us. Too much unsaid. Too much fear.
The bond hummed constantly. Pulled at both of us. Demanded more than we were giving it. Demanded reconnection. Real reconnection. Not just proximity.
On the second night, I woke to find him awake. Sitting in the chair by the window. Staring out at nothing.
"Can't sleep?" I asked.
"No. Too much in my head."
I sat up. The moonlight cut across the room. Made shadows. Made everything feel unreal.
"Come here," I said.
He looked at me. Hesitated. "Lyra—"
"Please."
He stood. Crossed the room. Sat on the edge of the bed. Close but not touching.
The distance was wrong. Felt wrong. Made the bond ache.
I reached for him. Put my hand over his. "I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For running. For not trusting you. For making everything harder than it had to be."
"You had reasons."
"Bad reasons. Fear reasons. Reasons that almost cost us everything."
His hand turned. Threaded his fingers through mine. "We're still here. Still fighting. That's what matters."
"Is it enough?"
"It has to be."
We sat in silence. Just holding hands. Just existing together.
Then Darian spoke. Quiet. Raw. "I was terrified when you left. Thought I'd lost you forever. Thought I'd never get the chance to fix it. To prove I chose you."
"I was terrified too. Still am."
"Of what?"
"Of failing. Of not being enough. Of the Council taking you away. Of raising this baby alone."
"You won't be alone. No matter what the Council rules. No matter what happens. You won't be alone."
The words should have comforted me. Should have eased the fear.
But I needed more than words. Needed more than promises. Needed him.
I pulled him closer. He came willingly. Let me guide him until we were face to face. Until I could feel his breath. Until the space between us was almost nothing.
"I need you," I whispered. "Need to feel you. Need to know this is real."
His eyes darkened. "Lyra—"
"Please."
He kissed me. Finally kissed me. After weeks of distance and pain and fear. Finally reconnected.
The kiss was desperate. Hungry. All the longing and need we'd been holding back pouring out at once.
His hands moved to my waist. Pulled me against him. The bond flared. Hot and bright and demanding.
I pushed him back onto the bed. Climbed over him. Straddled his hips. Looked down at him in the moonlight.
"Are you sure?" he asked. His voice was rough. Strained. "The baby—"
"The healer said it's safe. Said we can... as long as we're careful."
"Careful," he repeated. Like the word was foreign. Like careful was the last thing either of us felt right now.
I leaned down. Kissed him again. Slower this time. Deeper. Poured everything I couldn't say into it. All the fear and love and need.
His hands slid under my shirt. Warm against my skin. Traced up my sides. Found my breasts. Gentle. Reverent.
I broke the kiss. Pulled my shirt over my head. Tossed it aside. The cool air hit my skin. Made me shiver.
Darian's eyes roamed over me. Taking in every detail. The changes pregnancy had already started making. My breasts fuller. My body softer.
"You're beautiful," he said.
"I'm different."
"You're carrying our baby. You're fucking miraculous."
He sat up. Pulled me close. His mouth found my breast. Sucked gently. Then harder when I gasped.
My head fell back. Pleasure shot straight through me. Sharper than I remembered. More intense. Everything was more sensitive now. More responsive.
His hands moved to my pants. Worked them down. Awkward angle. Difficult position. But we managed. Got them off. Got me bare except for underwear that was already soaked.
"Darian," I breathed. "Please."
He flipped us. Suddenly I was on my back and he was above me. Looking down with those gray eyes that saw everything. That knew everything.
"Tell me if anything hurts," he said. "If I need to stop."
"You're not going to hurt me."
"I might. I'm barely in control right now."
"Good. I don't want you in control. I want you desperate. I want you as desperate as I am."
He groaned. Kissed me hard. His hand slid between my legs. Found me wet and ready and aching.
His fingers circled. Teased. Made me arch against him. Made me beg.
"Please. Please. I need—"
"I know what you need."
He pulled back. Stripped off his own clothes. Fast. Efficient. Then he was bare and I could see all of him. Hard and ready and perfect.
He settled between my legs. The weight of him was familiar. Right. Home.
"Slow," he said. "We go slow."
"I don't want slow."
"Too bad."
He pushed inside. Inch by inch. Careful. Watching my face for any sign of discomfort. Any sign he needed to stop.
But there was no discomfort. Just fullness. Just the perfect stretch. Just him filling the empty spaces that had ached for weeks.
"Fuck," he breathed when he was fully seated. "I missed this. Missed you. Missed us."
"Move. Please move."
He did. Slow at first. Careful. Like I might break. Like the baby might protest.
But I was fine. More than fine. Was perfect. Was exactly where I needed to be.
I wrapped my legs around his waist. Pulled him deeper. Urged him faster.
He resisted. "Slow, Lyra. We need to—"
"Faster. Harder. I need you. Really need you."
Something in him snapped. The careful control broke. He drove into me. Hard. Deep. Exactly what I needed.
The bond exploded. Connected us completely. I felt his pleasure mixing with mine. Felt his love and need and desperation. Felt everything.
It was overwhelming. Too much. Not enough. Everything.
"Yes," I gasped. "Like that. Exactly like that."
He found a rhythm. Hard and fast and perfect. His hand moved between us. Found where we were joined. Circled. Pressed.
I came apart. Fast. Intense. Pleasure crashing through me like a wave. Making me cry out. Making me shake.
He followed. Drove deep and held there. Filled me. Marked me. Claimed me all over again.
We stayed like that. Connected. Breathing hard. The bond humming satisfaction.
Finally he pulled out. Rolled to his side. Pulled me against him. His hand went to my stomach. Rested there. Protective.
"Are you okay?" he asked. "Did I hurt you?"
"No. I'm perfect."
"The baby—"
"Is fine. Everything is fine."
He kissed my shoulder. My neck. My jaw. Gentle now. Tender. "I love you."
"I love you too."
We lay in the darkness. Reconnected. Real. Together in every way that mattered.
"We'll get through this," he said. "The Council. Celeste. All of it. We'll get through it."
"Together."
"Together."
The word felt true now. Felt possible. Like maybe we actually could survive this. Could build something real. Could be the family our baby deserved.
I let myself believe it. Just for tonight. Just for now. Let myself trust that love was enough. That the bond was enough. That we were enough.
The next morning, Elizabeth knocked softly before entering with breakfast. Her eyes took in the scene. Clothes scattered on the floor. Darian and me tangled together in the bed covered only with the sheets. She smiled. Knowing. Pleased.
"About time," she said. Set the tray on the table. "You both look better."
My face heated. Darian laughed. Completely unbothered.
"We reconnected," he said simply.
"I can see that." Elizabeth moved to the window. Opened the curtains. Light flooded in. "Connor wants to see you both in an hour. Final preparations before the Council arrives tomorrow."
Tomorrow. The word hit hard. Reality crashing back.
"We'll be there," I said.
Elizabeth left. Closed the door behind her.
Darian pulled me closer. "One more day. Then we face them."
"I'm scared."
"Me too. But we'll face them together. And we'll win. Because we have to. Because our baby deserves parents who fought for each other."
"What if fighting isn't enough?"
"Then we'll keep fighting. Until it is."
