Calm before the storm.

Alex pov

It was as if everything had stopped, even time itself, had freezed. But it was more calm, before the storm.

I mentaĺly counted down from 3,2,1…

Before all hell was let loose. But the thing was that I was not there when it did.

I was still in a trance, from watching andrian throw the key to the hungry monsters before I felt myself being dragged out of the room in a hurry. The sound of gunshots firing behind our back, echoed throughout the building.

“Common keep up, if you want to live” andrian words reached me, but I was not making sense of it all.

Nothing that has happened in the past 20 hours made sense.

But one thing that made sense is that I have failed as the heir to my fathers legacy.

No matter how it turned out, the truth still remained that the key is now with one of the evil monsters, and the secret wealth of my father would be plunged all because I was stupid enough to fall for a boy.

“Leave me alone” I suddenly said, stopping myself from being dragged by andrian.

"What are you doing Alex?, one of them will come out of that encounter, and when he does, they will come after us. You precisely.

His words shook my heart. I almost reconsidered my choice, but his hurtful words from earlier, flashed through my mind.

“Even if I die. What do you care andrian. Like you said, all our moments are fake.”

“Hey Alex…” He started, but I instinctively reached for his waits, hoisting the gun and pointing it at him.

My breathing hard.

“Tel me why i would not shoot you?” I asked, trying real hard to avoid the tears that clung to the edges of my eyes.

“Alex, you are tense and probably shaken with what is happening…”

“You are not answering my question!!” I screamed in frustration.

I have never held a gun before in my life.

Hell, I didn't even know if I was holding it correctly.

“Please Alex don't kill yourself. Remove the nozzle of the gun away from your body” Alex said.

Shit. I was even holding the wrong side of the gun.

“Stay back, and don't think for a moment I would not shoot you. Besides, I hate you now”

I changed the position of the gun while pointing it at him this time.

“I will not do anything against you, Alex, but we need to really keep moving, if not…” He trailed off.

I shook my head vehemently. “I am not leaving here without Viper.” I said, determined to go and find him.

But as I turned to move back into the building…

I froze.

At the entrance stood, a bloodied Rufus.

He was covered with blood from head to toes, and from his hard glare, he wouldn't mind spilling more blood. He cocked his gun, pointing it at andrian, who was now with nothing to defend himself.

“Father…”

“Don't you ever call me that name again. You ungrateful egret. I ceased to be your father the day your mother died.”

I watched as Andrian's face contorted into an ugly expression. He was affected by what his father had just said. But why would I care if he was or not.

I was torn and confused. I was stuck in the middle of all this. But not knowing what to do, I let my instincts drive me.

“You killed my father” I stated the obvious while pointing my gun at him. “You were among the coup planners. I saw your message”

“Little boy, a coup, like you said is a coup. It's was a necessity that needed to be done.” He answered simply.

“Killing him is what needed to be done?” I scoffed. “You are a cold-blooded murderer”

“Hahaha. Kid, if that is all you've got before your death, then you must know that you are a fool. I have been called worse than this.”

He laughed at my words like it was some sick lame joke.

“You will not dare…,father” andrian finally spoke after being quiet for a while.

The way he pronounced the father with so much venom and hate. I had to turn.

“You will not dare kill him, father” he released, this time with a clear voice.

“And I why would I not dare?,” he said while cooking his gun at the same time.

“Because of me. You'did want nothing more than to kill me. I have disobeyed you all the time. Not follow your evil ways. And especially because I have found love. Something you didn't have with my mother.”

I could see andrians fathers mouth twitching, for a moment. The only expression I had seen on his face since he came out of the building.

“Yes, like you always tell me duty first before love. You put my mother above your duty. That was why you had to sabotage her car before she drove out. That same night, she was involved in a ghastly accident. Your phone rang, you picked…but you didn't go.

You let her die, all so your useless ego could be fulfilled. And you would take over all her family's assets.”

“You are saying rubbish…”

“Don't lie to me , murderer. After all, that's why you married her. For her family's wealth. A family of music geniuses, who have more enterprise wealth than you could imagine. with my mum being the only daughter of her family. It was normal that all those things would go to you”

“Tell me, Father, did I lie or not. Am I speaking nonsense or not?”

Andrian's father finally sighed, lowering the gun a little. “ I would not do anything to harm you, son. Even though you have sinned and committed an abomination”

He looked at me with disgust at the end. I know what he was saying. I was not a fool. he was talking about my relationship with his son.

He continued “if there is anybody that failed here. It's you, son. You got attached to your subject. Your mission, and I can see that it has clouded your judgment.”

“Don't say that like you cared for me. You never did” andrian screamed.

And for a moment, just a moment, I felt a little pity for him. But that was just a little ,before that feeling was gone.

“Son, you are my only world now. Whether I like it or not, you are my heir. How could I kill my heir?”

“That's what I am to you right, an asset” Andrian smiled bitterly. He put his hand in his breast pocket before bringing out something that made my brain go into a momentary pause.

On his hand was a key. Andrian has a hard glare on his face. “this is the real key. As you said, I hold you to your word.”

I could feel the man tense at the sight of the key. Even me. I was as shocked as hell.

“I thought…”

“So this is a fake” his father brought out a bloodied key.

“Yes” What do you take me as, to throw the real key out. I learned from the master”

“Indeed, hahahaha” His father burst into laughter. “Of course you learned from the master. I am sure that pine would vomit blood in his grave when he finds out he was fooled by a boy.”

So, Adrian had been with the fake key all this while. At this point, I didn't know what to feel or think. I just stared at the father and son duo.

“Now give me the key, son. You have done well.” His father urged.

“Noo”

But andrian shook his head.

“You would not dare defile the second time son”

“Or what!. You kill me like you killed my mum” andrian snapped back.

“Let me make something clear to you, son. Your mother was a loose end. She was aware that our matiahe was only out of duty. So it is not my fault that she died out of the same duty she believed in.”

“That's where you get it all wrong. My mum loved me. And she taught me to love, unlike you. A cold-hearted monster.”

“Now give me the key” Andrian father repeated this time, pointing the gun at me.

My heart almost jumped out of my mouth.

I was shaking like a leaf during harmattan.

Andrian expressions changed. “Alex, come here. Come to me. he wouldn’t hurt you.”

My mind was blank. But I was not stupid. My legs followed my instinct.

“You think I would not kill your abominable lover, right here and now” his father said with no atom of emotion.

“I know that. And I know that you would not do that if you are not sure that the key is safe. You know that if you do that, then I will never give you the key again. Considering your hesitation to fire, it's only one bullet that is remaining. And you don't know who to best use it on. Your unfilial son, or his lover.”

My heart shook at Andrians words.

“perfectly said, duly observed" andrian father gave a dmal laugh. "I expected nothing less from you. But It's so unfortunate. you would have made a potential and powerful Rufus. But like you said, Duty comes first before love.”

Everything that happened next happened in slow motion. The movement of Andrian's fathers hands right after his speech.

Before the sound of the gun firing.

The disbelief in andrians eyes, followed by the drop of a tear.

I didn't think twice.

Didn't hesitate.

I moved.

The only last thing was a searing hot pain that shredded my lower body. Followed by andrians scream of fear. Then, the loud voices of people that looked like uniformed trees surrounded the whole place.

All the voices were overlapping at the same time.

Andrians face was filled with unexplained fear. As he continued to shake me.

“I think he didn’t love me” That was my last thought before everything became dark.
