Chapter 10: Don't Try to Guess the Old Lady's Mind

Grandma Harris mostly stayed at the nursing home but always set aside a few days to keep an eye on her grandson.

When Preston Harris was young, Grandma Harris watched over his studies. Now that he was grown, she started pushing him to settle down.

After accidentally meeting Sophia once, the old lady decided she wanted Sophia as her granddaughter-in-law.

Fortunately, Preston lived up to her expectations and married Sophia.

Grandma Harris, carrying her bag, happily ran into the elevator, eager to visit her granddaughter-in-law.

The old lady knocked on the door with a bright smile. Sophia, having stayed up late working on a project, answered the door with dark circles under her eyes.

“Hello... Grandma?”

“Oh my! Sophie!"

Sophia was wearing her work clothes, covered in paint, looking quite disheveled.

Grandma Harris grabbed her arm, feeling sorry for her and giving it a squeeze, “Why are you so skinny? Is that boy not feeding you well?”

“Grandma, no, Preston treats me very well.”

Sophia was still in a daze, slowly regaining her senses, only to see the old lady briskly heading towards the kitchen.

Grandma Harris was down-to-earth and an excellent cook.

Sophia stood nearby, wanting to help several times, but the old lady refused.

“I’m here to nourish you properly. It will make it easier for you to have children later.”

Sophia blushed instantly but understood it was normal for the elderly to push for grandchildren.

However, she and Preston hadn’t consummated their marriage.

The old lady’s words made Sophia blush even more, nervously tugging at the corner of her clothes.

Having seen it all, Grandma Harris’s sharp eyes saw through Sophia’s thoughts.

Grandma Harris poured out a bag of oysters and other nourishing ingredients, making Sophia's eyes widen.

The old lady skillfully prepared everything and approached Sophia with a smile, “Our Preston is quite vigorous.”

“G-Grandma, I still have some drafts to finish. I’ll go handle them first.”

“You go ahead!”

The old lady squinted her eyes, watching Sophia flee the scene in a panic.

Grandma Harris couldn’t help but smirk, “It seems I’ll have to step in myself.”

Preston went to the nursing home in vain and only learned from a call that the old lady was already at home.

When he got home, Preston, burdened with questions, opened the door. Grandma Harris enthusiastically invited him in, “Perfect timing, the food is ready.”

“Why did you cook again?”

“Because I want to, got a problem with that?”

Preston approached the dining table, seeing it full of nourishing dishes, and glanced at the nervous, shy Sophia, who was sipping water.

Preston frowned, “You’re really worried.”

“You don’t understand, it’s for the good of the whole Harris family!”

The old lady urged Preston to sit down. Preston and Sophia exchanged glances, and Sophia smiled bitterly, looking away.

Grandma Harris, feeling affectionate towards Sophia, kept putting food on her plate, “You’re too thin. You need to eat more.”

Sophia, too polite to refuse, ended up eating until she was stuffed.

Noticing her discomfort, Preston raised his hand to stop her, “She can’t eat any more.”

“Alright, Sophia dear, what do you want to eat tomorrow? I’ll cook for you again!”

Both of them looked at her in surprise.

The old lady put down her chopsticks and said boldly, “What? It’s so late. You expect this old lady to go out and stay somewhere else?”

The old lady looked aggrieved, “I really have nowhere to go.”

Preston couldn’t believe it. The Harris family owned numerous properties, and their family mansion had countless servants. The old family home alone had more than ten servants.

Preston realized that his family members were all quite adept at acting.

The old lady’s performance was quite convincing.

Sophia believed her immediately, not waiting for Preston to speak, and quickly put down her chopsticks, “Grandma, of course you should stay here. You can have the larger bedroom.”

This apartment was bought by Preston specifically for their marriage, a simple two-bedroom place.

“No, no, I’ll take the smaller room. This old lady is not picky!”

The old lady waited for them to finish eating and then insisted on cleaning up, urging them to go rest.

Half an hour later, Sophia stood at the door holding her blanket.

Preston had just finished his shower and looked up at the blushing Sophia standing at the door.

“Let me in first.”

Sophia hesitated but spoke up. The old lady kept pretending to pass by the door, sometimes wiping the table, sometimes wanting fruit.

Only when Preston stepped aside and Sophia entered with the bedroom door closed, the old lady excitedly exclaimed, “Success!”

Tonight, she had made sure Preston ate a lot of nourishing food, thinking it would come in handy.

Inside the bedroom, Sophia and Preston stared at each other. Sophia shyly pointed to the bathroom, “Can I use it?”

“Of course.”

Sophia put down her blanket and hurried into the bathroom.

Preston stood by the bed, looking at the small pile of blankets with a pink bunny pattern.

He wondered how Sophia managed to fool the old lady but couldn’t help but smile.

When Sophia came out, Preston had already made a bed on the floor and was lying down, resting his eyes.

Sophia carefully walked past him, moving lightly.

Preston still felt her presence; her faint scent wafted into his nose as she passed by.

That subtle fragrance seemed to ignite a fire in his heart.

Preston frowned, feeling increasingly hot.

Once the fire started, it wasn’t easy to put out. Preston turned over, trying to sleep on his side.

He slowly opened his eyes, seeing the small lump under the pink bunny blanket. Preston could imagine Sophia’s small arms and legs under there.

His brows furrowed even more.

Preston turned over twice more, unable to stop his thoughts, feeling his body burn.

“Sophia.”

“Hmm?”

Sophia's voice was soft, “Are you having trouble sleeping? Should I sleep on the floor?”

Preston couldn’t help but laugh at her suggestion, “Do I seem that ungentlemanly?”

“No, I’m just worried you can’t sleep.”

“Sleep.”

Preston forced himself to sleep. Only when he heard her even breathing did he get up and go to the bathroom, taking a long cold shower to calm down.

The next morning, the old lady was up early, preparing breakfast.

Seeing the ingredients she had specially prepared, Preston decisively took Sophia out for breakfast.

“Sophia doesn’t have time before work. We’ll eat later.”

“You little rascal, I prepared this all morning!”

Preston pretended not to hear, pulling Sophia out the door.

Sophia needed to go to her company to hand over some work. She was a company artist, running an online shop as a side job.

“Grandma prepared all morning.”

“I don’t need to be nourished.”

Preston's casual remark left Sophia speechless, her ears turning red.

“I-I didn’t mean that.”

Preston suddenly leaned closer, “I know.”

Sophia’s body tensed suddenly as Preston fastened her seatbelt, “Alright, let’s go.”

Sophia couldn’t help but regret, muttering to herself, Sophia, what were you thinking?

Sophia thought too much, her earlobes burning.

She gently pinched her fingertips. Had she just imagined Preston would kiss her?

Uncomfortable, she licked her lips. To prevent a repeat of the previous situation, Sophia quickly unbuckled her seatbelt before getting out of the car, avoiding the earlier awkwardness.

She moved so fast that when Preston looked over, the situation became even more awkward.

“I-I’ll go now.”

Sophia fled, her face inexplicably hot.

Sophia walked into the company, still trying to gather her thoughts, when she heard a scream nearby.

Startled, she looked up.

In her line of sight, a man was pulling a woman’s hair and smashing her head against the wall.

Sophia recognized the woman as one of her coworkers, Isabella!
