No Rest For The Weary
No Rest For The Weary
Finally the chaos from the Annual Summit could fall away. Yes, of course, his sister needed to be found, but he was quite certain the right people would discover her first. It was best he didn't know where she was in case the High House of Camberia tried anything drastic, which he could see happening.
His townhouse in Crown was the perfect and secured place for his mate. He was happy that Caramia could finally loosen up and let their bond strengthen naturally without interference from the ton. However, she did prove that she was capable of withstanding the sharks of the ton. She did it with finesse and heartless contempt. She was brilliant. The ton wasn't worthy to know her compassion and sweetness.
For the short time Persephone had been with her, his sister had effectively guided her with one of the strongest lessons. Caramia now had her 'mask' -- her shield. He would be forever in his sister's continuous debt.
The little lights that lit the small garden in the back of the townhouse shimmered like lightening bugs. Caramia was outside in the back of the garden, sitting beneath the canopy of swirling perpetual nightscape of stars and silvery violet clouds. The ceiling of Starlet Province was a magical canvas of stars, shimmer, and billowy clouds. Daytime hours the stars glowed brighter in the dark sky. Shooting stars trailed across. It was beautiful, magical, and most importantly, peaceful.
As he made his way outside to join her for what he presumed was hot tea in the kettle, he reflected on the events of late. He found his mate young and almost lost her due to his ego and pride. His sister had stood up to that vile vampire and his disgraceful House. His best friend was chasing her down to bring her to safety, but he knew that he may not see either of them until they High House of Camberia was dealt with. He, as he was certain his father would as well, would help Derrick with seeing to their demise once the vampire figured out he could amass an army against them.
War was inevitably coming until then he would enjoy the peace and his mate.
"I wonder where they all are right now," Caramia mused, cupping her hands around her mug. She glanced up at him as he approached the table she was seated at. "Hot apple cider?"
Orion eyed the empty mug placed next to the kettle. He poured himself some hot apple cider, watching the curls of steam swirl about the top of his mug.
"Even your father mysteriously had to leave," she remarked, recalling how a vampire had approached him in the hangar just before they were supposed to board.
He noticed the look of shock that washed over his face before it fell to fear and panic as he regarded the paper in his hand. He had never seen his father react like that to anything. He was always very calm and collected. It was a rarity to for him to show true fear.
He didn't question him when he said he needed to leave them and that he would see them back in Crown at a later date. Not wanting to meddle into his affairs, he and Caramia watched him depart without even grabbing his suitcases.
"They'll be fine," he assured her.
Everyone was displaced, but they all would find their way and carve their own path. He truly believed that. His eyes gazed up in the sky for a moment before he heard a noise behind him.
He frowned, knowing that he had dismissed everyone for the day. Nobody should be in their home nor out in their garden with them.
"What's wrong?" Caramia whispered, feeling the shift in his mood.
He glanced behind to peer into his townhouse. The small pool of water right outside the back door looked inviting and undisturbed. Something felt off. Something just wasn't right. He could feel eyes upon him, watching and waiting.
"We have intruders," he told her grimly as he saw a couple figures suddenly appear. They were much closer than he anticipated. Was the High House of Camberia that ridiculous to target them so soon?
He was about to attack when their golden armor shimmered in the shards of light from the magic and stars above. He frowned, eyeing their clothing in surprise. They had hooded capes with ornate swords strapped to their side. A golden medallion with a fancy but oddly familiar crest carved into it caught his attention.
These vampires looked like they were straight from an epic fantasy novel. Not to say that so called mythical creatures didn't exist, he was indeed one of them. They literally looked like from another time and place.
"Are you the blood son of Lord Dimitri Cristos?" one of them questioned.
Orion eyed the three vampires in front of them warily. "What of it?"
"We are here to escort you to the castle," he started. "We are locating your father and you shall be reunited with him there."
He shook his head. "I'm not leaving here."
"You must," one of them insisted. "It is your duty."
Duty? He raised an eyebrow rundown question. "My duty is to my House." He smirked. "To honor and protect my mate," he said, standing in front of where Caramia was seated. "I don't even--"
"We do not have time for this," one of the vampires cut in as she glanced around. "I'm surprised we found you first. They'll be hunting you down even if you shall or shall not come under our protection."
Before he could question her, Caramia got to her feet and attempted to step around him, but he blocked her from doing so. He continued to shield her body with his.
"Who will be coming?" she asked the female vampire.
"The darklings and their vessels," she spoke, addressing Caramia. She frowned, gazing at his mate. "You look oddly familiar."
She glanced at her companions who nodded in agreement. Then they heard shattering glass within the townhouse. Orion glanced above and noticed silhouettes in the windows within the townhouse.
"We must go," the female vampire told them as she approached Orion and Caramia. "Your uncle is the King of the Vampires in all of the Elysiums. He's calling your father home."
Orion frowned at that. "My father--"
"Is not who you believe him to be," she interrupted him. She glanced at the others before staring directly into Orion's eyes. "His true name is Prince Dimitrius Calla. He is born from the old world. He is the younger brother of King Sylvain Calla. Our king is dying and has left no heirs. Your father is next in line for the throne and you shall be the crowned prince."
His mouth dropped open in shock. Wait, how was that possible? His eyes flicked to the obvious destruction of his townhouse. There must be some weight to what they were saying.
"They believe they found your bodies upstairs, but they will realize it isn't you," she told him. "They will torch this place. There is nothing left for you here. They will never stop hunting you down." Orion swallowed, glancing at Caramia in concern. "Come with us and you shall discover the truth or be hunted by the ones destroying your home."
Caramia reached for his hand and he felt her squeeze it reassuringly. Orion felt guilt seep into him. He had wanted her to finally relax and be at peace while she adjusted to her new life, but now he wasn't even certain if life would truly be the same again.
I'm with you wherever you go, she promised. Once again, she squeezed his hand in assurance.
Orion just sighed then nodded his head. "Fine. We come only to gain answers and clarity," he finally consented. "That is all."
"That'll do for now," one of her male companions told him. "Come. We need to move quickly."
With that, he could no longer promise Caramia peaceful solitude. They followed the others to the hidden underground path that led to streets of Crown. He wasn't even surprised they already knew of it. All he truly cared about at the moment was that he needed Caramia safe and he needed answers.
