Like A Phoenix
Caramia was beyond excited to leave this dreaded experience behind. Orion and her were finally heading to his townhouse in Crown and she craved the privacy it promised.
"Excited?" Orion chucked as they stood in the elevator.
She knew he already knew the answer, but she couldn't help the bright smile that burst out from her. She knew he couldn't deny his own excitement. With everything falling apart around them, they could find solace in a safe haven. She hoped Persephone would discover her safe haven with Caleb. They needed each other like she and Orion did.
First, they needed to get through check out then they would be free from the confines of the ton for a little while. Orion was a high standing politician in vampire society. He could never truly leave the ton while he held that position. She couldn't wonder what their life would be like if he did vacate his position.
Could he be happy just being only them? Could he desire that simple type of life where they could travel and be themselves away from politics and government? Her eyes widened in shock at how selfish she was being. Of course he'd hate that. He'd surely hate her for even thinking it. He was of this world and she shouldn't ever expect he'd give that up for her selfish, childish fantasies.
Then sick realization sank into her, belatedly realizing he could see her secret selfish thoughts.
She quickly glanced at him and as she feared he had an intense look in his eyes even though he was staring ahead. "Fan-Fantasies," she assured him nervously as she stammered. "M-Merely fantasies. I know that can never happen."
There was a small smirk upon his mouth and his emerald eyes slid to hers, searching her soul for the obvious lies in her heart. Lies he already knew, because their bond prevented any secrets. She swallowed as he looked back ahead and her heart sank. She wanted him and she would prove to him that he didn't make a mistake with choosing her to be his mate.
The flare of determination was watered down when the doors opened to reveal the hotel lobby. What if he did make a mistake? What if he grew to resent her if she was never accepted into the ton or never grew accustomed to their ways? What if he realized that--
Stop. His voice cut through her mind and she felt his hand reach down to grip hers. His eyes pierced into hers.
When he attempted to walk out or rather her drag her out of the elevator, she gulped, watching curious eyes watch them. Whispers started to circulate. She hated this. She hated them as much as they hated her, because she knew and they knew she didn't belong here... with him.
Orion stiffened and his eyes snapped to hers dangerously. Her heart pounded at anger pumped through her and she knew it was his. Before he could say a word, Lord Dimitri found them.
"Shall we check out?" he addressed Orion. There was obviously caution in his eyes and stance.
Orion took a deep breath and nodded, releasing his painful grip on her hand. Stay here. With that, Orion and Lord Dimitri walked off to deal with checking out. She watched them and realized he left her by her lonesome. Had he done it to punish her for her thoughts?
She swallowed, glancing around at the many shark-like eyes peering at her and them. She nervously shifted her weight from one foot to another until a familiar voice drowned out the others.
"It's a such a shame that the High House of Cristos have fallen from their mighty perch," Mercedes told her minions loudly. "They used to be revered, but now look at them. Ladies, look at what they've become and invited in."
Squeezing her eyes shut, she wanted to run away, but she knew it would foolish and telling. She trembled, wanting to be anywhere but here. As if sensing she was moments from breaking down, Orion and Lord Dimitri appeared. Although they appeared unaffected by the ton, she could feel Orion's anger. He placed a hand on her back and led her towards the entrance of the hotel.
"Look at them trying to be a united front," Mercedes said, rolling her eyes. "We all know the truth. We all know that Persephone ditched Lord Reginald, because she can't handle a vampire lord of that prestige. She couldn't handle that Lady Sylvie meant more to Lord Reginald than her. When a mistress has more weight, it shows that the frigid bitch was too icy to accommodate accordingly. It does seem to be a theme. It's a clear indication of what's lacking in the High House of Cristos as of late."
Orion and Lord Dimitri stiffened at Mercedes's loud assumption. Everyone was staring now. Caramia glanced about, noticing the High House of Camberia had shown up as well. Lord Reginald smirked snidely at her comments, eyeing Orion and Lord Dimitri. Lord Dimitri continued to walk on, intent to leave, but she saw his hands shaking at barely restrained fury. Orion followed suit, but she already felt his rage pumping through her. Mercedes continued her remarks, delighted by the fact she was clearly getting under their skin.
Unable to stand Mercedes and her crass, she spun elegantly away from Orion as if she was a dancer. She could feel his surprise, but she didn't let that stop her from facing the ridiculously petty vampire as she zeroed in on her.
"My oh my, you certainly think you have a firm grasp on affairs you truly know nothing about," she told Mercedes and her minions, straightening her back and lifting her chin just like Persephone. "I can assure you that if all that minuscule brain can muster then perhaps it is best you stick to the gossip rags and leave the big boy stuff to us mature folk."
"Ex-Excuse me!" Mercedes cried, drawing everyone's attention once again as she went up into her face. "You have the gall to attempt to humiliate me when your entire House is steeped in scandal."
"The fact you have to depend on theateratics to get your point across is quite telling," she chuckled at her, shaking at her. "Too quick to be defensive, too quick to garner attention. You live vicariously through the lives you read in the headlines. In the grand scheme of things, that is all you'll ever be -- a bystander, an outsider, a pretender... A cow who chews grass too loudly, munching on the nonsense that is conveniently laid out for them. You are nothing more than cattle led to the slaughter. I would feel sorry for you. I really should especially for those that are truly less fortunate than myself, but I'll gladly watch you go merrily towards your ignorant end."
With that, she turned to leave, noticing the look of pride on both Orion and Lord Dimitri's faces. She could feel Orion's immense pride within her and she knew she did the right thing to stand up to her.
"Who the hell do you think you are?" Mercedes questioned, laughing wickedly. "You are nothing but a blood digger yourself. You used Orion for his blood to save your dirty blood--"
"Are you angry over the fact a dirty human like myself managed to do what you couldn't? You couldn't secure his affections but I did," Caramia chuckled softly, giving her a pointed look. "I've survived mortal death. He could've just cured me and let me go on my way to disappear back up into human society, but he brought me into vampire society once more to be his long awaited mate. He desired me. I am a High Blood. This blood running through my veins makes my blood his blood and our blood will always be purer than yours. Our blood is still sought after no matter what scandal is brought into the fold. You will never be one of us. All you have is your words for weapons. My words are both weapons and the truth. You have nothing. You are nothing. You got one measley night in the library with a handful of fortunate moments you stumbled upon him at his weakness. I have him for the rest of our immortal lifetimes."
She turned away to see the smirk on Orion's face. He offered his hand to her and she took it. As she took a step away, she stopped and gazed over her shoulder.
"Who am I?" she repeated, gazing at her then around at everyone else watching before returning to Mercedes. "I am Lady Caramia Valient of the High House of Cristos. If you ever speak ill of Lady Persephone or my House again in my presence, your fate shall be sealed. There shall not be forgiveness for enemies."
With her head held high, she gave her attention and focus back to Orion and they walked out with Lord Dimitri ahead of them. The car door was opened already waiting for them. When they climbed into the car and the door shut, she finally breathed and Orion chuckled at that.
"Well done," Lord Dimitri praised her with high respect and warmth.
She blushed. "Persephone told me in order to survive I needed to wear a mask."
"She's right," Lord Dimitri agreed. "It's our shield. Wear it proudly."
"I hope she's okay wherever she is," she whispered.
Orion smirked. "She's fine. Both Caleb and Derrick as well as the Firm, are looking for her. She'll be safe in no time," he told her confidently. He placed an arm around her. "To think, you truly believed you couldn't belong in the ton."
She glanced up at him, offering him a small smile. His eyes searched hers for a moment before he dropped a kiss on her forehead and she sighed in contentment.
____
He didn't even look at her.
Not once.
Dove Knightley had walked in to prepare for her shift. She had witnessed the stunning exchange between Lady Caramia Valient and Lady Mercedes Delacroix. She smiled at Lady Caramia's victory, not only because she was a part of Lord Dimitri's House, but because she was glad she put that obnoxious bird in her place.
Lord Dimitri had been at the bar last night, but he hadn't shown up like he promised. She could remember the taste of him and the feel of him. How she had wanted him to mark her the way vampires did so she could in turn mark him the way fairies did! When he showed self restraint, she had allowed it, because he had promised they would discuss everything after the ball.
The ball was cut short by a fascinating display of nudity and waterworks. In the chaos, Lord Dimitri had vanished. When she couldn't find him in the crowd, her heart sank as the sick dread blanketed over her. She just knew he wasn't going to show up and she was right. He hadn't.
He just passed by her without even looking at her. He didn't acknowledge her. He just departed the hotel with Lord Orion and Lady Caramia following his lead.
So that was it then? After waiting for the right time for him, he decided she wasn't worthy to be his mate. She didn't belong to his aristocratic world.
Tears gathered in her eyes. He had made his choice. He didn't want her. He didn't want her at his side as his mate. Oh, yes, she had received the message loud and clear.
There was no point in staying at Immortal Chrysalis Hotel. She had only stayed for him so he'd know where he could find her when the time was right.
Trembling, she walked into the bar, attempting to hold back her tears and shock. Oh, yes, it was time to move on. It was time to strip off this entire facade and return to the old world. Dove Knightley didn't serve her well. Not one bit. She vowed she would never sing again. Dove Knightley, the rejected mate of Lord Dimitri Cristos of them High House of Cristos, would be buried forever within a grave inside her heart.
It was time to be who she was meant to be -- Dove Nightingale.
Yes, she was a Nightingale from the Nightingales bloodline that protected the a principal bookshop back to Skye Elysium when the veil was open. She was bloody someone for goodness sake!
That was right! Her family was entrusted to be the guardians of one of the principal entry points in Skye Elysium. Her family magic could open up the gateway if needed for Librarians, Readers, and other important members of the Elysiums to come back before the veil was open again. Shale Abbey was the only other principal entry point for the Skye Elysium and nobody but Vampire Royalty and their elite guards knew that true location within the elysium.
Yes, she would finally succumb to her family legacy. There was nothing left for her here. It was time to return home. She would prove to everyone that she was somebody worth having.
