Chapter 4 the devil doesn't bargain
"I'll do it” Ursula said.
“Just save my mom, please”
“Good girl” Ethan smirked.
Ursula hated his guts.
Ethan pulled out his phone.
“Come to the city hospital. I found a surrogate”
In an hour, an old man who looked like he was in his seventies accompanied by a younger man draped in a black suit appeared with a black jacket of files in his hands.
Ethan pointed at Ursula.
“Okay”
The man handed the documents to her.
She tried to scan them as much as she could.
Clause 1a The signee agrees that Ethan Blackwood will have full authority over the signee's body.
Clause 1b The signee agrees that they will hand over authority over their womb
Clause 2a The signee agrees to walk away after childbirth and…
“I don't think you should be wasting a lot of time for someone whose mother is on the line”
Ursula looked up at Ethan and scribbled in the way her weak hand would let her.
The lawyer took the file out of her hands.
The doctor walked in with a file for Ursula to sign showing that she gives permission for the surgery to be carried out on her mom.
Ursula's heart raced as she signed. A little bit of relief..
Mom would be angry but she would be alive and that's all that matters.
“Isn't she strong enough to be discharged?” Ethan asked the doctor.
“We were just waiting for her to wake up….Oh, I must say you're such a kind man to help this girl out for free.
Thank you”
Ethan smiled at Ursula.
After what seemed like thirty minutes, two nurses came in to prepare Ursula to be discharged.
Her body still felt sore but they told her that she'd be fine.
Her legs still vibrated.
They changed her back into her clothes.
Ethan walked away from the ward and asked his butler, Anthony to support Ursula out of the ward into the waiting room.
Ursula watched as her mother was wheeled into the theatre.
The theatre lights turned from green to red.
She searched the eyes of everyone for someone to comfort her.
Ethan was too occupied with his phone.
His butler and the lawyers kept discussing the documents.
Ursula sat on the cold sterile floor with her knees folded to her chest.
Mom, I can't wait to tell you how sorry I am for raising my voice at you…and also how my whole life is about to change.
After an hour, the doctor came out.
Ursula stood up.
Ethan stared.
“Doctor, how's she? Can I see her?”
The doctor glanced at Ethan and back at Ursula.
“I'm sorry…but she couldn't survive it”
“Oh my God…” Ursula fell to the ground wailing.
“Noooooo”
“Get up, we need to go” Ethan commanded.
“Do you understand what it means to lose your loved one?” Ursula barked, her face red.
Ethan gnashed his teeth.
“You should watch your mouth..we had an agreement..be professional about it or I'll sue you to court.”
Ursula struggled to catch her breath.
Her hands were vibrating.
Her nose was runny.
“Can I at least see her?” Ursula turned around to go into the theatre but Ethan pulls her by the wrist.
“There's nothing there for you but a corpse. Face your new life”
He pulled her out of the hospital.
The lawyer and his butler followed.
They got into the car just before paparazzi could surround them.
Ursula pressed her forehead against the tinted glass as the car sped away. Her cheeks burned.
Somewhere behind them, in a sterile room, her mother lay cold.
Ethan sat beside her, scrolling through his phone as if nothing had happened. His presence filled the car.
When she finally found the strength to look at him, he turned his head slowly, blue eyes catching hers.
“Stop crying,” he said.
“You’ll exhaust yourself before you even get to my house.”
Ursula swallowed back the sob that wanted to escape.
Ethan smirked faintly
“Your new home.”
Her throat tightened.
When the gates finally swung open, Ursula’s eyes widened despite herself.
The mansion loomed like a kingdom, tall windows reflecting the flood of golden lights, black cars lined up like soldiers.
Wealth. Power. Everything she wasn’t.
The car rolled to a stop.
Ethan stepped out first without offering her a hand.
She followed, legs trembling.
Servants appeared at once, bowing.
“Welcome back, sir.”
Their eyes moved briefly to Ursula in curiosity.
Her face flushed hot. She wasn’t welcome here. She knew it.
Inside, the house swallowed her whole, crystal chandeliers and endless staircases.
It felt like stepping into another world, one she didn’t belong to. “Anthony,” Ethan said, shrugging off his coat. “Show her the room.”
Her knees almost gave way.
Anthony gently touched her elbow, guiding her up the staircase.
She wanted to resist, to scream, but her body was too weak, her soul too broken.
At the top of the stairs, Anthony paused before opening a door.
His expression softened briefly, almost like pity.
“Miss Ursula…you should rest. Tomorrow, everything begins.”
Her voice cracked.
“Tomorrow?” Before he could answer, another voice drifted from down the hall.
A woman’s voice. Silky. Sharp.
“Anthony, is he back?” Ursula turned, blinking through the haze of tears.
A tall, elegant woman appeared from the upstairs, draped in silk, blonde hair falling like a waterfall, blue eyes burning with curiosity.
She was striking, flawless, too much for Ursula to take in.
The woman’s gaze slid past Anthony and landed on Ethan, who had just stepped inside.
“So it’s true,” she said softly, her lips curving in a smile that was far from warm.
“You brought someone new.” Ethan’s jaw tightened.
His blue eyes narrowed, his expression unreadable. Ursula didn’t know who this woman was or why the air suddenly felt heavier.
But Ethan did.
And the way he looked at her told Ursula this was only the beginning.
