Chapter 78

Vita looked over at the still body that was lying on the floor. Tristan was no longer the man she had fallen in love with those years ago. Vita wiped her face. Her tears were not for the man lying there but for the man who had just left.

“Goodbye, Tristan,” she whispered.

Vita turned and headed back up the stairs. She needed to find Deak. Vita wanted to know why he had left her there alone. What did she do wrong?

Deak was sulking as he walked. He was frustrated; it sickened him knowing she was scared of him.

“Deak!” he heard Vita yell behind him.

Deak’s heart raced as he heard Vita’s voice resonate inside him, causing his wolf to purr with excitement. Deak continued to walk, although it pained him with every step he took.

“Deak, you better stop right this instant,” she demanded.

Deak chuckled at the threat. But he did what she wished and stopped.

Vita ran up to him; her chest was hurting with how fast she had to move to catch up. She stood right before him, but he refused to look her in the eye.

“What was that?” she asked him.

Deak shrugged.

Vita was losing her patience with him. What was he doing? Why was he acting like this? “I call B.S. Why did you leave me back there?” She pushed at his chest.

Deak loved feeling the touch of his mate, whether she was angry with him or not. Just the feel of her closeness sent tingles through his body.

“I wanted to give you some space,” Deak answered.

Vita’s eyebrows furrowed as she looked at him, confused. “Why would I need space from you?”

Deak took a step back. “When I looked at you, you had fear in your eyes and face. I caused that.”

Vita extended her hand out and placed it on Deak’s chest. “I had fear for you, not because of you. I know you would never hurt me.” Vita moved her hand up to touch Deak’s cheek.

Deak closed his eyes as he leaned into her touch. Deak reached up and placed his hand over hers. He was glad that she was here. He didn’t want to be the reason for her pain.

Vita smiled at Deak, but the smile faded when she saw something familiar resting on his wrist. Vita’s heart began to race as her anxiety started to fill her system. No, no, no, no, no. This wasn’t happening.

“Deak, what was the last thing Tristan said to you before you… before you killed him?” she asked.

Deak followed Vita’s eyes and saw the new black band dangling from his arm. Tristan’s last words echoed through his head.

“If I can’t have her, you certainly can’t either,” Deak whispered as his eyes widened at the threat. Tristan had gained the upper hand, even after death.

Deak started to step back away from Vita.

Vita shook her head as she continued to move closer. "No, don’t. Please don’t leave; we can figure this out. We can fight this.”

“I don’t want to hurt you,” he exclaimed.

“You won’t. I know you won’t. I trust you.”

Deak turned away. “My wolf, he has so much strength. What if I can’t fight the anger and rage?”

Vita walked around to face him. “You are stronger than you think. Please, we can fight this together.”

Deak shook his head. “I would rather die than hurt you or break your heart.”

Vita lifted her chin and stood her ground, “Then prove it. Don’t leave; stay with me, and we will fight this together. Being a part will only make this harder.” Vita was getting angry; everything he had done for her, rescuing her from the witches, going up against Tristan. He fought for her and didn’t even know her. And now he was going to throw it all away? For what? Vita had been afraid of her true feelings for Deak, but after everything he’d done for her, she wasn’t about to let him walk out of her life now. Vita walked up to Deak and jumped into his arms, forcing him to catch her. She leaned in and pressed her lips firmly against his. The tingles raced as the fire in her belly ignited when Deak returned her kiss with as much passion.

Vita pulled away and rested her forehead against Deak’s. Never had Vita felt a kiss so fantastic as this one. She looked at Deak when she finally caught her breath and said, “Deak, you fought for me when you didn’t even know me. You cared for me, even when I was weary of you and unsure of wanting this relationship.” Vita then wrapped her hand in his hair and pulled his head back. Deak’s eyes lit up with fire and need as he stared at her. “Now it’s my turn. I’m fighting for my mate. I’m fighting for you. Even if you try to run, I won’t stop until I reverse this spell or curse, and we can be together.”

Deak’s heart filled with joy. He was about to tell her yes when he felt a vibration in the side pocket of his pants. Deak groaned as he fished out his phone from his pocket and looked at who was calling him.

“This had better be important,” he snarled into the phone.

“It’s time for you to come to my office so that we can go over the details of your uncle’s will,” the lawyer spoke.

“Now isn’t a good time.”

“I think now would be the best time. You can even bring your little witch mate along with you.”

Deak rolled his eyes into the back of his head and then closed his eyes. He didn’t want anything his Uncle tried to leave him in his will. The Lycan King was dead; couldn’t Deak live in peace without a constant reminder of his uncle coming to haunt him?

“Fine, I’ll be there soon,” Deak spat out through gritted teeth and hung up.

Deak let out a heavy sigh and leaned his forehead against Vita's.

“What’s wrong?” she asked as she rubbed the back of his head.

He sucked in the scent of his mate to help calm his nerves. He was relieved when he started to calm down.

“I have to go to my uncle’s lawyer’s office. Will you come with me?”

Vita leaned back and looked at Deak for a minute before answering. “Igen (yes).”

Deak growled as he leaned and kissed his mate on the neck in appreciation for her answer.

Vita’s body shivered at the kiss. No one had ever made her feel the way that she was feeling. It scared her, but she knew that if she ran from this, she would regret it for the rest of her life. She decided to throw caution to the wind and ride this out until the end.

What was the worst that could happen? she asked herself.
