Chapter 52: A New Dawn

Chapter 52: A New Dawn
Eleanor
I kept moving up and down the Attorneys small back office with a cigarette between my fingers trying to think of the next step after being stupid enough to not try and find out what Albert was working on in that warehouse. Even in death he was still a pain in my ass and I couldn’t sleep better anymore. Neither my partner nor I thought of that and now they had a way to blow my plan to hell altogether.
He left me there and went to check on his customers after we seemed not to agree about the part where he asked me to lay low. Both bastards killed people I cared about. They had no idea how hard that was for me and one was holding the man who made my heart tick. There was no way I was going to let them dance on my grave. Something had to be done and fast and the priority was safety deposit box 14 of the new founders bank that was definitely on their radar.
“Has anything come up yet?”
“No. This cigarette hasn’t helped either”
“Perhaps because you’re smoking the filter” he fished out another and lit it for me, “You don’t want to listen to me right now but I suggest you sleep over it”
“The longer I wait…”
“The better clarity. Let me handle the business you were talking about” he took his seat.
I had known the attorney so long to know whenever he had a brilliant idea and that was one of those days. He kept scratching his beard.
“Spill it”
“Loyalties are on the fence right now and I have clients who can sneak in some product to start you off, we sell to their suppliers at a favorable price and cut them out. You get food from their mouth you get their attention. If they realize they are losing the market they’ll go back to dealing instead of hunting you…”
“And the banks?”
“We stage two robberies”
“I’m listening” I put off the cigarette with my hand, the nicotine had done the opposite for me and opened his big brain instead.
For the next five hours the attorney and I planned our big introduction to the crime scene. He gave the plans and I countered each with weaknesses and loopholes until we agreed on what was best and since we met perhaps it was the first time we both realized what a great team we were.
“The missing piece. Why him?”
“I spend the better part of my stay there learning from him. Trust me we bring him on board we will be unstoppable”
“Hmm”
It hurt so much he didn’t trust my intentions with Knox. He took a sip of his beer.
“Go ahead”
“It’s just hard to believe you can love anyone. Just between you and me, was he a job or you really love him. I mean I can see the resemblance with the very first gangster you fell in love with but him?”
“You think I’d fake a comma just to get close to Knox because he is the embodiment of what a mafia Don should be?”
He nodded cracking a smile. I frowned to show disappointment.
“Come on, in my defense you’ve used everyone in your life…”
“Trust me I love him. Fate brought us together”
“What happened to-you make your own fate bullshit?”
“Things change” I checked my watch, it was almost two in the morning, “Catherine must be worried sick. In the morning we have business to take care of”
“Yes. In a few hours a new dawn begins for Fort Canon city”
I hugged and kissed his cheek then grabbed my helmet and left shutting the door behind me. That night I was going to sleep like a baby and if everything was going to go according to plan then my days of running were over.

Axel was enjoying an obnoxious early morning of drinking with his silent partner at the top of the skyscraper. It was the first time he had invited him at the roof top and they had just finished having another obnoxiously quiet breakfast. The man barely said anything to him and Axel was starting to get worried about the invite. Was it a show of good faith or his death? For a man that dangerous silence meant a lot of things and disappointment could have been one of them.
In his defense Axel had tried his best, together with Jax they had followed all the leads they got in that warehouse and they had all the banks under surveillance.
“Before he rose to fame and made a fortune in politics the big man was just a normal guy, paying his taxes and following all the rules. He didn't even get a single parking ticket. Never been arrested, he was a guy you’d miss until you talked to him” the man said staring blankly in the vast fort canon skyline, the stars were still darting in the sky that was getting clearer and clearer ushering in a new day.
“How did he change his fate?”
“See that’s why I like you Axel always asking the right questions”
The gentle pat on his back gave Axel all the assurance he needed. He was not dying that night.
“He got tired of playing by the rules when he lost everything he cared about”
“The accident?”
“It was no accident. His wife and daughter were at the right place but at the wrong time. To get justice, real justice for his family he realized he needed to get his hands dirty”
He paused and took a long puff of his cigarette. Axel waited patiently for him to continue talking, he didn’t want to interrupt his show of trust by being corky. Why else would he tell him secrets that he had held in his chest since they ran into each other? Why would he let him in on the inner circle?
“To the world he was a clean man. Resilient. He started again and his story won him the gubernatorial election. But behind the scenes he was the worst of the worst. The chimera threatens to shine some light on him and we can’t let that happen”
“Why are you telling me this?”
“To assure you that you’re on the table of the new world order”
Axel wanted to jump up and down like a little girl. But he realized perhaps it was too early to celebrate.
“Wait, is it happening?”
“It might. Walk with me” he led them back inside, “In a few hours its the beginning of the end”
“I don’t understand. We don’t have the chimera yet”
“You will”
When they stepped in the room the guard switched on the TV, he checked his watch as they sat down. Axel hesitated and sat down too. They kept smoking.
“What about Jax and the iron serpents?”
“The beauty of our relationship is I always anticipate your needs”
He leaned back and on the couch and spread his arms smoke escaped his mouth and nose like a chimney. As much as he hated waiting Axel was patient with him.
“You’ve always wanted to wipe them out of existence. You’ll get that chance soon, you’ve waited all this time am sure you can wait a few days”
“My man”
“Told you. We take care of our own” he checked his watch again, “it begins!”
“What?”
“Quiet!”
The TV screen went red with breaking news followed by a picture of Eleanor Blackheart.
“All this time you could do that?”
“I wanted to give you the thrill of the chase. You failed but it’s okay. We are still going to get her. By the end of the day. She can’t run she can’t hide. Nowhere is safe”
Eleanor had just shot on top of the most wanted list in fort canon. Reason? Stealing state secrets
. Not the kind of New dawn her and the attorney anticipated
