Chapter 96
Genevieve
I swirled the wine in my glass and took a slow sip. The taste was bitter, sharp against my tongue but I kept my expression steady.
I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing me falter.
Across the table, Alonzo’s brows drew together. That familiar dark look clouding his face. His patience was running thin.
Celina sensed it too. She laid her manicured hand over his and whispered something meant to soothe him.
He didn’t even glance at her. His eyes stayed on me.
“Seems like your date is going to be very entertaining tonight,” he said finally, his tone smooth but dripping with venom.
Or maybe it was some threat.
I didn’t know. I don’t want to know.
But his words made shivers run down my spine.
Walker chuckled.
“Well, I’m sure it will be. Genevieve’s quite an interesting woman.”
I saw it instantly—the twitch in Alonzo’s jaw.
The way his gaze hardened when Walker used my first name so casually.
I downed the rest of my drink in one go, the wine burning a path down my throat.
“Thank you..” I nodded. “I find you perfect.. You’re exactly how my father described you.”
I said it deliberately. I wanted Alonzo to hear every word.
I couldn’t forget he said he was bored of me. He didn’t want to see me again.
“My dad asked me to postpone the date but I had already seen her face. And I wanted to meet her personally.” Walker added.
I realized then that Walker must be someone important to him—someone he couldn’t afford to humiliate in public.
Otherwise, Alonzo would’ve already dragged me out of that restaurant by my wrist.
For once, I believed I didn’t have to be afraid of him.
His silence almost felt controlled, calm. I should have known better.
Alonzo leaned in, elbows on the table, his face close enough that I could smell his expensive cologne. His eyes bored into mine. I started getting negative vibes from him.
“Oh really?” His lips twitched. “And what exactly is Miss Genevieve? Are you a stripper at the club?”
The words hit like a slap.
My smile vanished. Walker froze beside me. Celina pressed her lips together to stop a laugh.
Her eyes rolled.
My hands clenched into fists under the table. I wanted to throw my drink at him.
But Alonzo kept shamelessly staring at me. as if he had asked a perfectly reasonable question.
“I’m a doctor,” I said through my teeth. My nostrils flared with anger.
“Oh, sorry.” he murmured. His eyes traveled over me again. It was a little humiliating. “My mistake. You just gave me a different impression.”
The meaning behind his tone made my blood burn. I grabbed another glass of wine and swallowed it in one go.
“You guessed wrong,” I said, setting the glass down hard. My voice was sharper than I meant it to be. “I’m a professional doctor.”
A few people turned to look. Alonzo only smiled, a lazy cruel smile that told me he was enjoying this.
“It’s alright..” Walker leaned closer. “You looked too sexy for being a doctor..” He whispered.
I smiled and nodded.
But I already knew what Alonzo was doing. When he’d said this date would be entertaining, he meant this. He wanted to watch me lose control.
The food arrived and I focused on my plate. I wanted to eat and leave before he said another word.
I took a quick bite. The food caught in my throat. I coughed, trying to breathe.
“Gene,” Walker said quickly. He rubbed my back in slow circles to calm me.
It should have helped. But then I felt it—Alonzo’s stare.
Cold. Heavy. Possessive.
That look was darker than any insult.
If a gaze could burn, I would have turn into ash. I just jerked Walker’s hands away from my back.
I was already wearing a backless suit and his palm was caressing it too much.
I stared at Alonzo.
He wasn’t saying a word, but his silence said everything.
His jaw was tight. His hand clenched around his glass so hard I thought it might crack.
Walker held my hand. He had no idea he was walking on the edge if the knife.
“Don’t worry.. It’s a yes from me. I would ask your dad to set a date for next month for our marriage. I liked you..”
He spoke politely.
My eyes widened. Next month? Did dad talk to him about it.
But it shouldn’t be my concern right now.
Because the entire atmosphere felt too cold. Icy. Almost making me shiver.
I jerked my hands from Walker’s hand and the wine glass before me slipped on my clothes.
“Oh.. Sorry.., I am so sorry..” I said and rushed to the bathroom. I ran to the bathroom as fast as I could.
That sudden change in everything. It felt so strange.
I splashed water on my face. My heart pounded so hard that I was scared it would jump out of my ribcage.
I stared at my wet face in the mirror. A little pale.
My breath is heavy.
And then, the door behind me creaked open.
I stared at its reflection in the mirror. I froze the moment I saw a tall figure standing at its door.
Alonzo.
