Silent Hopes

Silent Hopes
Maya and Lily pushed through the heavy wooden doors of the lecture hall, the faint echo of their footsteps swallowed by the large space.

The day was gradually going by but things in Lily’s life felt they were going at a standstill and she had no control over what was happening.

The massive room, with its high arched ceiling and rows of polished oak benches, was nearly empty except for a few early arrivals flipping through last-minute notes.

Lily could hear Maya talking beside her, but her mind was lost in an abyss of her own creation, making it hard to even concentrate.

“I can’t believe we have to sit for this exam today,” Maya said, hugging her textbooks tight against her chest.

Her eyes darted to the darkened corners of the hall as if expecting the shadows themselves to bring more bad news.

“I’ve barely read a single chapter. Every time I tried, I just kept thinking about Lucas, Liam, and Graham" Maya said and she dropped her head in a dramatic way.

Lily’s eyes flickered to her best friend and she caught on to what Maya was saying.

Lily sighed, her delicate fingers fidgeting with the frayed edge of her denim jacket.

“I know. This whole thing feels like a nightmare. I mean, they were defending my honour. Ethan was completely out of line, and now he’s twisting everything.”

Maya’s brow furrowed as they took their seats near the middle of the hall. She leaned closer, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper.

“I know right!! Ethan’s charges are beyond ridiculous—attempted murder? Assault with Intent to kill? It’s insane. And because Ethan’s dad has connections in the High Moon Council, it’s all getting traction.”

Lily’s eyes were distant as she stared at the grand chalkboard at the front of the hall, her thoughts miles away.

The words she had heard only the night before kept replaying in her mind, Ethan’s voice slick with smug satisfaction.

“One date, Lily. That’s all it takes. You go out with me, and I make these charges disappear.”

“Lily?” Maya’s voice broke through the haze. She placed a hand over Lily’s trembling one. “What’s wrong? You look like you’re about to faint.”

Lily hesitated, her lips parting, eyes darting around to make sure no one else was within earshot.

“Last night… I went to confront Ethan. He—he said if I went on a date with him, he would drop the charges.”

Maya’s eyes widened with horror.

“What?! Are you serious? That vile, manipulative snake! He wants to blackmail you into going out with him?”

Lily nodded miserably.

“I know. It sounds insane. And a part of me keeps thinking… what if it’s the only way? If it keeps Lucas, Liam, and Graham out of trouble…”

Maya slammed her textbook onto the bench with a sharp thud, drawing startled glances from two students sitting up front.

“Absolutely not. Lily, you can’t even consider it. You know the Lucas and Liam would never let you do this. They would rather face the High Moon Court head-on than have you forced into something like that.”

“But Maya,” Lily said, her voice almost a whisper, “what if it’s the only way to fix this? They’re in so much trouble, and the charges are stupidly outrageous. If they’re convicted, it could mean exile… or worse.”

Maya squeezed Lily’s hand tighter.

“Don’t you dare think for a second that this is your responsibility alone. Ethan is playing games because he knows you care about them. He’s a coward who hides behind threats. And as much as I wish Lucas and Liam’s influence as Alpha twins could sweep this away, the High Moon Court was created to judge high-ranking wolves specifically so no one could use power to dodge justice.”

Lily’s head dropped, her hair falling around her face. Her voice cracked.

“I just don’t know what to do.”

Maya’s expression softened. She gently tucked a strand of hair behind Lily’s ear.

“You don’t have to know right now. Let the lawyer work it out. And we’re not alone in this, okay? We’re a pack. We stand together.”

A long, tense silence fell between them as they pulled out their exam papers, the room slowly filling with classmates who chatted nervously about multiple-choice questions and essay prompts.

Suddenly, the roar of an engine cut through the air outside the hall’s tall windows.

Lily glanced up absently, then froze as a sleek black Mercedes with tinted windows rolled past. The crest on the door—a silver wolf wrapped around a balanced scale—made her breath catch.

“Maya,” she gasped, gripping her friend’s arm. “Do you see that car?”

Maya squinted through the glass.

“Yeah, it looks fancy, but… what about it?”

“That insignia,” Lily explained breathlessly, “belongs to Hawthorne & Associates—the law firm that specializes in defending high-ranking wolves. Robert Hawthorne himself must be driving. He’s the only one who uses that car.”

Maya’s eyes lit up with cautious hope.

“Why do you think he’s here so early?”

Lily nodded slowly.

“I think he’s on his way to meet them right now. Maybe… maybe this is the break we need.”

Maya let out a shaky laugh, relief washing over her features.

“See? I told you things would work out. Hawthorne is the best lawyer in the realm. He has never lost a high-profile case.”

Lily’s heart still hammered with anxiety, but the faintest smile crept onto her lips.

“I hope you’re right, Maya. Because I don’t think I could survive if something happened to them.”

The exam proctor called the class to attention. Maya gave Lily’s hand one final reassuring squeeze before letting go.

“No matter what, we’ll get through this together.”

As they bent over their papers, the faint rumble of the black Mercedes disappeared down the long, tree-lined avenue outside.

Lily closed her eyes for a moment, whispering a silent prayer that Robert Hawthorne would be able to do what none of them could—and that somewhere, the tides were already beginning to turn.
