Chapter 22
Chapter 22
In the room, Jane cried herself to sleep, forgoing supper.
Forget it. How could she have the stomach to eat now? What's more, her eyes were swollen from excessive crying. They were so big that they looked like large, red candy jawbreakers.
Sometime during the evening, Claris, Gwen, Anne, Susu, and Lydia, came to check on her severally, giving her a few sliced loaves of bread, as well as a delicious serving of medical soup to replenish her energy. After all, as someone who fell into a two-day coma, they had to ensure, she, a patient, ate her filling, no matter how little she could take in.
What's surprising is that the Laird was also absent for supper.
Their Laird wasn't the sort of cruel leader who would starve guests or even prisoners. So many had several guesses concerning the absent duo, wondering if they had a lover's prattle, or perhaps Jane was rejected by the Laird, causing her to stay absent while he the laird stayed annoyed, avoiding supper in hopes of not seeing her for the time being.
Yes.
Even if their Laird was overly tolerant of her, many still did not believe their Laird would be interested in an outsider. Firstly, he had a destined partner, who they were sure was a Werewolf like themselves. So how can Jane be accepted?
No way! Many ladies who were turned down by the Laird over the years, inwardly scoffed, thinking the shameless vixen was probably crying over her failed attempt to seduce their Laird.
No matter how good-looking Jane was, no one thought their Laird was the one to make the first move.
Hmph!
What a lowly wanton woman! Their laird would never fall for her!
Delilah was in a fine mood.
She grabbed an apple on her plate, biting into its juicy exterior, thinking that God has eyes.
Recalling the embarrassment Jane caused, Delilah was pleased to see that the Vixen finally got a taste of her own medicine.
Hahahahahahahaha~
She knew rumors could never be reliable.
If the Laird can also yell and reject the scheming bitch like this, didn't this mean he had no feelings for her?
Delilah felt like dancing around the hall and offering sacrifices to the heavens for opening the Laird's eyes.
Only she is good enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with him as his beloved.
Like so, a new rumor began to spread, with the headline as Jane being an unwanted woman.
One shouldn't look down on the famous superpower women in this era had -- Gossip.
With no TVs, radios, phones, or the internet, how else do you expect people to pass their time?
Gossip was a deep-rooted part of their lives, be they werewolf or human. So it wasn't surprising how the women chewed their mouths while serving the burly men who came back from training.
The men who trained and lived in the castle all ate their meals in the main hall while being served ale and food by the clanswoman assigned to work within the castle walls.
Only a handful of women were allowed to sit with them. Delilah was considered one of these women since she had a status in the Mackay lands akin to nobility.
Delilah was pampered since young, and excessively spoiled by her parents. Anything she wanted, she got. Well, almost everything.
The Mackay Laird was the one thing she couldn't get despite her father's powerful position in the clan. Her parents didn't live here but in another fortress, Mackay site. The only reason her parents sent her here was that she cried and made a big fuss, swearing she would never speak to them again if they didn't send her to Alexander's castle.
Like that, the night went by swiftly. Surprisingly, Jane had a good night's rest, despite the fatigue. If anything, the crying only made her fall into an even deeper sleep. What's more, sleeping on a bed, rather than on a horse was far better for her aching body.
As a guest, her bed was one of the finest in the castle. Regular peasants slept on beds stuffed with dried-up stalks of wheat and straw, that pricked many when they rolled.
For guests and those with higher positions, the mattress was filled with clothes, fabric, or dried-up sheep's fur. The main issue mostly came with the pillows that were stuffed with feathers.
A majority of the feather's pointed end is typically cut off to prevent it from bursting through the pillow case and stabbing the sleeper.
However, no matter how one cuts and blunts the pointy ends, there’s always a little bit of sharpness that pricks through the pillows now and then.
Jane slapped her cheeks and jumped out of bed, swearing to not be defeated by her crying heart.
Like she always says: There's no use crying over spilled milk. What's done is done.
From now on, she would treat Alexander as a friend, hiding her blossoming love for him. After all, once she saves him, she should be able to go back to her own time, right?
At least that's what she concluded from her many deductions. That crazy tour guide should've sent her here to rescue Alexander. Only then can she be free to mend her then-broken heart far away in a place he would never reach?
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
Who?
