Chapter 16
Chapter 16
'What a strange lady.' All five thought, thinking of the way she looked at them.
Gwen wasn't the only one written in the history books. All five of them were powerful in their rights.
In this era when only men were considered eligible enough to become stable boys, taking care of stables and the soldier's majestic stallions, the 27-year-old Lydia was the exception, pushing women one step forward in this manly world.
In today's society, it was an honor to attach the horses of powerful men in clans, households, and royalty.
Horses are seen as vital transportation elements since no wagons or carriages would move without them. To train a horse, take care of its every need, and keep its health in check, while making it grow stronger into a war horse is not a task for a mere woman.
Most men would rather drink their blood than give their powerful horses to a woman to care for.
These horses accompanied them during battle and were akin to how dog lovers see dogs.
Most men have spent more time with horses than their wives. They have grown up with their special horses, and have ridden them through the meadows, open plains, forests, and other terrains during their many adventures.
Hell! These horses have seen them cry in secret and smile when they wanted to.
Some horses have even dragged them out of a bloody battlefield, never giving up on them even during a loss.
Many men in today's world might not love their wives, but they sure as hell loved their horses.
This was why they felt a woman would never understand the bond between a soldier and his war horse.
Most women only ride horses a handful of times a year or so. Their duties like laundry, cooking, cleaning, and other womanly activities, occupied their time. Hence, it was not strange that many women had no clue about how to take proper care of horses.
Women had their takes, just as men have theirs.
Splitting for wood was a man's duty. Cutting down trees was a man's duty. Likewise, dying in battle while the women and children were at home safe was also a man's duty.
Everyone had a part to play, so how can they trust a mere woman to look after their horses?
Of course, the exception was Lydia!
She was good, if not better at taking care of war stallions than most men in today's world.
It was like finding a female mechanic in the 1800s when the first engine car was invented.
Such a thing deserved to be on the front page of a newspaper. With her reputation, even visitors who stop by were more than happy to leave their horses in her care.
Of course, she trained a team of male and female caretakers, while she oversaw everything alongside a few others.
One could say she was one of the earliest true vets in history. It wasn't just horses she looked after. Sometimes, people brought their pets over too. She also did Carriage and wagon repairs as well.
As for the 33-year-old Susu, she was a talented head chef with an impressive reputation after attending several contests in Scotland and England.
The 37-year-old Claris and the 38-year-old Anne were both head maids, ensuring the castle was in order.
The reason they were put down in history books was that they were the Laid's wet nurses, who were like mothers to him.
They raised and cared for Laird as though he were their own.
'Perhaps they too would be of help to me.' Jane thought uncomfortably.
Of course, she would also do her best to be genuine to them. She truly hoped they could all get along and become friends since the thought of playing with their emotions to get what she wanted, disgusted her.
No one likes the feeling of being used.
After talking for a while, the initial tension in the air had lessened greatly, as now, everyone spoke more freely.
Pfft~
Hahahhahaha~
"Nay. Tis' not like that. We would never do such a thing as cut one's hair while they sleep, no matter how much we detest their hair."
"That's right. But how can your cousin do such a thing? She must've truly been angered to the point of madness by her beloved."
"Aye... though I disagree with her approach, I dare say her actions were quite thrilling. The girl has grit."
"That's for sure." The ladies agreed, listening to Jane's absurd story about her friend who found her husband/lover with another woman's pants down.
For them, there was nothing wrong with a man taking up another wife. The issue was the sneaky actions and disgraceful way he went about it.
What's more, t'was a slap on the woman's face for him to do so in her bedroom chambers.
Were there no places he could think of? Why must it be on her bed? Now every time she sleeps on it, she would recall the time she was cheated on.
Women, no matter the era, were all the same. They loved good gossip. And Jane was more than willing to get them to drop their guard down around her. But while the women conversed, the news of her awakening had already reached the Laird's ears.
In an open but private courtyard field, the shirtless Alexander swung his sword with vigor and the air whistled.
Swish!
The nearby men took several more steps back, watching their lord place all his frustrations in his attack.
Bam!
An entire tree from a single move. The killing intent was choking that everyone had the illusion the end of the world was upon them.
"Laird! Laird!"
A sharp cry bellowed as a scrawny figure approached the group from afar.
The good or bad news?
Everyone prayed for good news, admitting they couldn't handle any more of their Laird's choking aura.
Even if they turned into werewolves, their aura would never be half of what the Laird's own was.
His aura was so strong that it forced half of them to their knees.
"Laird! Laird!... Good news!... The lass is awake!"
