Chapter 160 MARKED

Chapter 160 MARKED

The door was cold under Alex’s palm.

He’d been standing there for half a minute.
Long enough to count his own heartbeats.
Long enough to hear Mia’s breathing behind him and realize it was matching his.

That wasn’t normal.
Ten minutes ago she was just noise in a room.
Now her breath was a second drum in his chest.

The bond.
It was already there.
Faint.
Like a wire pulled taut between them.

Behind him, the packhouse held its breath.
Twenty-three wolves.
No one spoke.
In the council room, Ivan and his men made muffled sounds through the rags.
But out here, in the hall, it was quiet enough to hear dust settle.

The plan was simple.
Walk out.
Get in the car.
Drive until the road ended or until he found Sara.

Then Mia’s hand touched his arm.

Small fingers.
Cold.
Shaking.

"Alex. Wait."

Alex turned.

She looked like she had when it was her first time shifting, when she had realized that she was something other than human that she had believed to be for years.

Chin up.
Eyes too big.
Trying to be brave and failing and doing it anyway.

Someone had washed her face.
The dirt was gone.
But the bruise on her cheekbone was still purple, blooming out under her eye.
The split in her lip was still red.

"What is it, Mia?" Alex asked.

He kept his voice low.
If he used his Alpha voice right now she’d flinch.
And he’d just gotten her back.
He wasn’t going to scare her.

One of his Bratva men who he had summoned from the city, Jake was by the stairs, pretending not to watch.
Two of the she-wolves were by the kitchen door, hands over their mouths.

Varro stood near the fireplace, old and bent, watching like this was the last thing he’d ever see.
Even through the wall, Alex could feel Ivan listening.

Mia took a step forward.
Then another.
Her hands were fists at her sides.

"I need to do something, I have finally decided, being a coward might get us killed but this will make us stronger together," she said. "So, before you go."

Alex frowned. "What do you—"

She didn’t let him finish.

She moved.

One second she was in front of him.
The next she was on her toes, arms locked around his neck, and her teeth were in him.

It wasn’t an attack.
It wasn’t wild.

It was deliberate.

Her teeth sank into the thick muscle where his neck met his shoulder.
Right over his pulse.
Right where the old books said an Alpha wore his mate’s mark.
Right where every wolf in the room would see it for the rest of his life. His mate just gave him the permission to go feral, she just accepted that they could die together because that was the curse with being a hybrid.

Pain came first.
Hot.
Sharp.
Clean.
Like a knife and like coming home at the same time.

Then the wolf howled.

Not out loud.
Inside.
A sound that shook his ribs and rattled his teeth.

Alex didn’t move.
Didn’t make a sound.
He stood in the middle of the hall, in front of his entire pack, and let his Mia mark him.

He could taste her.
Salt from tears she hadn’t cried yet.
Copper from where she’d bitten her own lip earlier today.
And under it, her.
The fear that was finally starting to cool.
The rage that was finally finding a target.
The love that was big enough to be terrifying.

Fifteen seconds.
Maybe twenty.

Her jaw was locked.
Her body was trembling.

Then she pulled back.

Her mouth was red.
His blood.

And on his neck, right above his collar, were her teeth marks.
Two perfect arcs.
Broken skin.
Claiming.

The hall went silent.

Not the quiet from before.
This was the kind of quiet that came after a gunshot.
The kind that meant something had changed and everyone knew it.

Alex looked down at her.

His heart was trying to beat out of his chest.
Not from pain.
From what she’d just done.

She’d just claimed him.
Publicly.
In wolf law, that meant something.
That meant mine.
That meant touch him and you answer to me.

"Why?" he whispered.

Mia lifted her chin.
Her eyes were wet but they didn’t fall.
Not yet.

"Because he’ll come back," she said. Her voice was steady. "Ivan. He will. And if we’re marked, if we’re bonded, he can’t break us. He can’t take us."

She put her hand on his chest.
Right over his heart.
Her fingers were ice cold.

"Now we have each other," she said. "For real.
No one can say I’m not yours.
No one can say you’re not mine."

Something in Alex cracked.

Years of being the Alpha who lost his family.
Years of being the man who walked into rooms and people looked away.
And this girl, with blood on her mouth and a bruise on her face, just gave part of it back to him.

Pride hit him so hard he had to breathe through it.

He reached for her.
Fisted his hand in her hair at the back of her neck.
Pulled her up to him.

And he answered.

His teeth found the soft skin where her neck met her shoulder.
The place every wolf in the room would see.
The place that said she is mine in a language older than words.

He didn’t break the skin.
Didn’t need to.
The intent was enough.
The weight of it.
The promise.

He held her there for three heartbeats.
Let the wolf memorize her scent.
Let the man memorize the way she didn’t flinch.
Let the father memorize the way she leaned into it.

Then he let go.

The bond snapped into place.

It wasn’t words.
It wasn’t pictures.

It was her.

Her fear, spiking, then smoothing out because he was here.
Her anger, hot and bright, aimed at the man in the next room.
Her heartbeat, finding his and syncing with it until he couldn’t tell where he ended and she began.

And from her.
Not words.
A feeling.
Alex? Is that you?
I can feel you.

"Oh," Mia whispered.
Her knees buckled.

Alex caught her.
Held her up.
His thumbs wiped the blood from her mouth.
His blood.

"Smart girl," he said. His voice came out rough. "Goddess, you’re so fucking smart."

Behind him, someone made a sound.
Varro.
Like a sob.
Like a prayer.

Jake had his hand over his mouth.
The she-wolves were crying.
This was the kind of thing they told pups about.
The kind of thing that got carved into walls.

Alex turned.
Slow.

Let them see.
The mark on his neck.
The mark on hers.
Matching.
Public.

"Now they know," he said.
His voice filled the hall.
It wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.

"Touch her, you touch me.
Touch me, you die."

No one answered.
No one moved.

"Good," Alex said.

He looked at Varro.

The old man was staring at the marks like he’d seen the Moon Goddess herself.
"Varro."

Varro blinked. "Yes, Alpha?"

"Bind them."
Alex nodded toward the council room.
"All of them. Hands. Feet. Mouths.
Cut the phones. Cut the internet. Cut the landlines.
I don’t want Ivan calling anyone.
I don’t want his men breathing without permission."

His men moved.
Ropes.
Zipties.
Duct tape.

From the next room, Ivan laughed.
Even with the rag in his mouth, Alex could hear it.
Like this was all a joke to him.

Alex walked to the doorway.
Looked in.

Ivan was on his knees.
Tied to a chair.
Blood on his shirt from where Alex had hit him.
Grinning.

He looked up when Alex came in.
Mumbled something through the rag.

Alex crouched.
Put his hand on Ivan’s cheek.
Thumb pressed into the bruise.

"You took the wrong thing from me," Alex whispered.
Just for him.
"And now I’m going to take everything from you.
Your men.
Your money.
Your name.
And then I’m going to take Sara back."

He stood.
Walked out.
Didn’t look back.

Mia was still shaking when he got to her.
Adrenaline.
The bond.
The crash after.

Alex pulled her in.
Held her until her breathing matched his.
Until her heart stopped trying to run out of her chest.

Then he tilted her face up.

She was so small.

And she’d just done the bravest thing he’d ever seen.

He kissed her.

Not soft.

Hard.
Claiming.
A wolf telling the world mine.

It lasted three seconds.
When he pulled back, her eyes were glassy.

"That’s so no one ever questions it," he said. Low.
Just for her.
"So no one ever thinks they can touch you and get away with it."

Mia nodded.
A tear finally fell.
But she was smiling.

Alex turned to Varro.

"Take care of her," he said.

Varro nodded once. "I will."

Alex stepped in close.
Voice dropping.
So only Varro heard.

"Or I’ll have your head."

Varro didn’t blink.
"I know."

Alex held him there for three seconds.
Then let him go.

He looked at his men.
"Two minutes.
Four cars.
Every vehicle that left this territory in the last six hours.
Every warehouse. Every safehouse.
We don’t stop until we find her."

"Yes, Alpha," they said. In unison.

Alex walked Mia to Varro.
Handed her off.

She clung to him for one more second.
Whispered in his ear.
"I can feel you. It’s warm. Like a blanket."

Alex kissed her forehead.
"I know, baby.
It means I’m coming back.
And it means I know where you are."

He let her go.

Walked out the front doors.
Into the sun.

The bond was a warm coal under his skin.
Mia behind him, safe.
He could feel her breathing.
Could feel the way her fear eased when he stepped outside.

In front of him: the road.
And somewhere down that road, Sara.

The wolf wasn’t waiting anymore.
The man wasn’t either.

Alex rolled his shoulders.
Felt the mark burn.
Felt the strength.

Marked.
Claimed.
Bonded.
Stronger.

And he ran.

Behind him, the door closed.
Behind that door, Ivan screamed into a rag.
In front of him, the hunt.

The first car peeled out.
Then the second.
Alex was in the lead.
Windows down.
Wind in his hair.
Mia’s heartbeat in his chest.

They were coming for her.

Three miles out, Alex felt it.
A tug.
East.
Faint.
Like a string tied to his ribs and pulled.

Sara.

He didn’t know how he knew.
But he did.

He pressed the gas down harder.
