Chapter 53
Lilith! You have to see this!" Kent's enthusiastic voice cut through the twilight-the gentle rustling of leaves was just around this small clearing.
"What is it?" she asked, curiosity bubbling as she turned from where she had been collecting wildflowers. The sun had dropped low on the horizon and had left a soft, golden glow over the landscape.
Just trust me! Come with me!" He beckoned her to him, his eyes aglow with excitement.
She dropped the flowers into her apron and ran to join him. "Should I be afraid?" she asked, jesting. "You know your last 'big reveal' was a cat stuck in a tree!
"Alright, that was a good adventure!" He retorted teasingly, shrugging off her teasing. "But this is different! It's…well, you need to see it for yourself!"
Lilith laughed as Kent pulled her hand, taking her deeper into the woods. Evening shadows danced around them as the sun surrendered to the night, and she felt a flutter of thrill in her stomach. The anticipation-the mystery of what he had discovered-wrapped around her like a gossamer thread.
Eventually, they reached the top of a small hillock. "Here! Look!" Kent pointed dramatically toward the sky.
Lilith's gaze rose, and her breath caught in her throat. Before her stood a gorgeous wooden telescope, an elaborate contraption much more so than anything she had ever seen: brilliant engravings snaked up and down its sides while ornate carvings adorned the base. "Kent! Is this yours?"
"Not precisely, but tonight it's ours!" said he, beaming yet. "See?" It was a controllable excitement on his face that had infected her right away.
"How is it meant to work?" she went closer and he placed it delicately on its stand, adjusting with his quick hands.
He asked with sudden eagerness, his tone tinted with tenderness: "Just look through it, paying extra attention to the stars, mind you. It's magic, I promise.
"No one in our village could ever dream of such a marvel!" Lilith exclaimed, peering through the eyepiece. The world around them faded and was replaced by shimmering orbs of light twinkling against the inky sky. "Oh, it's. incredible! It's as if I could reach out and touch them!"
Kent stood beside her, watching her every reaction with attentive warmth. "Isn't it? Those stars-they're ancient, some of the oldest in the cosmos. And right now, they're all ours."
As she pulled her eye away from the telescope, a grin spread across her face. "I can see why you were so eager to share this. It feels like I'm discovering a hidden treasure!
Every star-kissed kiss under the stars, pure in a treasure kept for reminiscence," he answered with an alteration in tone. Of course, he sounded more serious this time, like some serious current beneath what sounded rather like ripples on his skin, running butterfly murmurs down into her stomach.
"Lilith turned to Kent with the brightness in her voice subdued: "Kent! You actually do believe that we would be kissing here?
"Why not?" He moved in closer, the sparkle in his eyes very blue and serious. "The stars have witnessed all our forefathers' tales of wonder. They're a great backdrop to whatever we create together."
She looked deep into his eyes, the depth of his sincerity embracing her like a caress. "You make it sound so romantic."
Because it is," he replied softly, his eyes drifting to the sky for inspiration from the shimmering constellations. "Each star tells a story, and I want to create our own chapter, right here."
She was moved by his words; the warmth bloomed in her heart. "What do you have in mind?"
"First, a kiss for every star you see," he smiled, low and playful, and drew her closer.
"I allow, but I choose the stars!" she said jocularly, her laugh dissolving the tension surrounding them in mere air.
"Deal! Me or you?" he challenged, the sparkle of naughtiness dancing in his eye.
Lilith tilted toward the constellation of Orion and her heart began racing as she said, "That one—that's Orion's Belt. A warrior that confronts the night."
"Fearless and bold," he added, his lips drawing close to hers, "Like someone else I know.".
With a surge of bravery, Lilith leaned in and tenderly pressed her lips against his in a soft, exploratory kiss. It was as if time ceased to exist around them and the world melted—the hushed whispers of trees and the faraway call of a night creature were merely shades of gray as it funneled down to those two lost in a magic moment.
"Not bad for a start," mused Kent, as his lips parted from hers.
"Let's try again!" she giggled, pointing to the bright star that marked the heart of a certain hunter. "That one! It's so bright; it's like it's shining just for us!"
Kent obliged, leaning in again, capturing her mouth in a kiss that was more passionate this time. They shared breath and laughter, their hearts entwined like the constellations above.
“Okay, I’m definitely counting that one as two kisses!” he declared, pulling back just far enough to tease a grin from her.
“Two? Such a generous policy!” she exclaimed, her cheeks aflame with warmth.
Stars can be generous," he mused, pulling her in once more and planting soft, lingering kisses that with each heartbeat were deepening. They explored each other's warmth, the kisses waving between them like the stars' very own magnetic pull.
I could get used to this," Lilith said breathlessly, pressing her forehead against his as they paused to catch their breath. "Finding constellations and kissing beneath them. It's an adventure I could dream of forever.
"Good, because this is only the beginning. We have so many stars yet to kiss under," he promised, his hands gently cradling her cheeks as he leaned in again, this time capturing her lips in a deeper, more tender kiss that sent shivers racing through her.
"You really mean it?" she asked when their lips finally parted, her heart fluttering wildly with hope.
Of course. I want to find each star with you. Each story, each moment, the sparks flying between us." He kept his eyes on hers, an edge of tenderness behind them that was both comforting and adored. "And I think someday our tales will be told among those stars.
Lilith's cheeks colored with the thought, a heat coiling in her chest as she reveled in the magic of this moment. "Then let's keep exploring," she said, grinning so brightly, enthralled by his words.
"Then next, look at the Pleiades!" He pointed toward another cluster of stars. "Seven sisters, forever intertwined, just like us.
“Seven! You’re ambitious!” she remarked teasingly, leaning back against the blanket they had spread out as they began their adventurous exploration.
“Just making sure it’s memorable,” he quipped, and they leaned toward ea
ch other again, sharing sweet kisses in between searches for constellations.
