Chapter 45
Lilith fell into a deep sleep, the world around her melting into nothing as she fell into a dream. She found herself in an open, endless meadow with colors of gold and green, the result of a low sun, casting delicate rays of light dancing across the landscape. Birds chirped melodious songs in the distance while a soft breeze blew with the sweet scent of blooming wildflowers. It was a very beautiful day, just like most days she had spent at her mother's garden.
She floated across the meadow, lighter than air, a figure materializing in the distance-an image she had dreamed about countless times before. It was her mother, who was standing beneath a great willow tree; its sweeping branches swayed elegantly in the wind. A rush of warmth washed over Lilith as she approached, her heart swelling with joy.
"Mom!" Lilith called, an exuberance in the tone of her voice that spilled from her very soul.
Her mother turned, with a soft smile lighting in her face that Lilith had missed so much. "Lilith, my love!" she exclaimed, opening her arms.
In one stride, Lilith bridged the gap between them, her arms embracing her mother as though this was a reunion long due. Her eyes welled with tears as she dug her face into her mother's shoulder. "I missed you so much," she whispered amidst the warmth of her mother's closeness.
"I've missed you too, sweetheart," her mother replied, drawing back to look into Lilith's eyes. "But I'm here now, if only for a little while. There's so much I want to share with you."
Lilith nodded, her heart fluttering in that peculiar mix of joy and unease. "I wish I could see you every day. Sometimes it feels like I'm losing you all over again."
You will never lose me, my love," her mother said softly. "I'm always with you, even if you can't see me. Our love transcends time and space. But right now, there are important things we need to discuss."
Lilith felt a shiver run down her spine, the gravity of her mother's tone pulling her back into reality. "What is it? Is something wrong?
Her mother stepped back slightly, her expression changing to one of concern. "It's about Kent."
Lilith's heart was racing, a wave of emotions running through her. "Kent? What about him?"
"Your heart is invested in him, yes?" her mother asked, cocking her head slightly. "But there are shadows he holds within him, shadows that he does not reveal. He may not be who you think he is.
Lilith's brow furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean? Kent is trying so hard to be better. I believe in him! He has been through so much, and he is not like the person he was before.
Her mother's eyes softened, filled with a mother's love. "It is good to believe in people, sweet girl. But sometimes, what we see on the surface can be deceptive. Kent is struggling with aspects of himself that he hides away, even from you."
"But he's a good person!" Lilith protested, her voice tinged with desperation. "He's doing everything he can to be better after what happened in his past.
I know you want to protect him, but love cannot blossom in darkness," her mother returned serenely. "You have to listen: there is something about his past that can raise question marks on what kind of man he is now. This isn't about judging him guilty; this is about the truth. Secrets have a way of turning love into shadows when they are not faced.
A lump formed in Lilith's throat as her emotions began to swirl inside her like a storm. "But how can I encourage him to share these things if he's so afraid? What if he doesn't want to pull me into that darkness?
Her mother took her hands; the touch of their skin sent an echo deep into Lilith's heart. "You need to let him know you love him, even at his worst. You accept him fully. At the same time, you do need to take care of your heart. You must be strong for yourself, too.
I wish you were here to help me," Lilith confessed, her voice trembling, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I don't know how to talk with him about this without hurting him.
Her mother said, "I may not be present in body, but my spirit is always with you," in a soft and melodious voice. "Remember, the conversations you have with him are not about blame or anger. Speak from your heart. Tell him you want to understand, that it's okay to be vulnerable with you. Show him the love that refuses to shrink in fear.
I'm scared, Mom," Lilith said, her voice cracking. "Scared he'll push me away. Scared I won't be able to help him.
"There's strength in vulnerability, Lilith. Trust the bond you have; that will lead you both. He needs to feel that sharing his burdens won't get him to lose you," Mom pointed out, her face gravely serious. "Of course, love does ask for trust and truth. You just cannot be his light if he refuses to show you his darkness.
Lilith absorbed her words, her heart heavy from the meaning of what had been said. "What if he's not ready to share? What if I lose him before he's able to confront what ghosts him?
If that were to happen," said her mother, who took a firm but softening tone, "that would have been his decision, and not yours. You will be able to provide him love and support, but you are not to force him open. That is a prerogative he must make himself.
Lilith felt an emptiness well up inside her, a mix of fear and sadness weighing heavily on her heart. "I just don't want to lose him, Mom. He means everything to me."
I know, sweetheart, and love is tender," her mother said as she took Lilith in her arms, embracing her. "But take this dream for what it was to remind you that no matter what the outcome is, your self-worth isn't tied in to another person's journey; you have to continue following your inner light.
"What if the darkness consumes him?" Lilith's voice was shaking; even the notion cut a piercing ache through her breast.
"Then you'll be able to stand beside him, as long as one can do with compassion and love," she said, stroking Lilith's hair softly. "Yet, always part of yourself will be well-guarded. Never let it out of your sight-never let who you are be hidden from view, as are your dreams, your happy moments."
I don't want to feel so helpless," Lilith whispered, her heart in the ache of such turmoil. "Why does love have to be so much pain and uncertainty?
Because love is complex," her mother replied in a soft voice, comforting Lilith by wiping away the tears. It requires you to be open, trust others, and be fearless in facing uncertainties together. The pain one finds along the way is a test of how strong and tough it may be. However, do not be afraid of this; rather, learn to live with it since at the end of the day, it brings joy, hope, and companionship.
Lilith took a deep, shuddering breath, absorbing the warmth of her mother's presence. "How can I carry on without you?"
"You carry me with you always, in your heart," her mother replied, her voice a tender echo. "I'm proud of the woman you have become, Lilith. Trust yourself, trust your love for him, and know that I will always be watching over you.
Suddenly, the dream began to swirl and shift around them, in colors of the meadow, blurring into softness. "No! Please don't go!" she cried in anguish, as panic surged higher in her body.
"Remember, my angel," her mother's voice whispered, so soft yet powerful. "Your love is a beacon. Guide him gently, but be gentle with yourself, too. Whatever happens, you are never alone.
And just like that, the landscape faded, her mother's figure dissolving into the echoes of her memory. As the dream collapsed around her, Lilith felt the emptiness creep back in-a stark reminder of her reality.
She awoke with a gasp, back in her room, the sun cutting through the curtains and lighting the space she had called hers. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and she brushed them away, feeling a deep sense of loss, yet a flicker of determination kindled by their conversation.
"Mom," she whispered into the morning silence, "I'll do my best. I promise."
In that moment of lucidity, she felt the burden of her emotions and the strength of her resolution. She would go to Kent with ope
n arms and an open heart, prepared for whatever shadows lay ahead for them.
