Chapter 46

As the sun had set below the horizon, the estate where the ball was being held shimmered with the soft glow of twinkling fairy lights. Laughter and loud chitchat filled the air, and the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. Then, amidst all the well-dressed guests, Lilith appeared, a vision in her beautiful gown, sparkling like constellations against the deepening sky. Her radiant smile drew eyes as moths to a flame, and by her side was Kent, charming and unassuming, his laughter ringing with sincerity.

"Look at her, pulling out her charm," Matilda whispered in distaste to Donna, who stood beside her, clenching her fists at the oncoming waves of jealousy that were threatening to spill over. Donna's beautifully tailored gown seemed to fade into the background compared with Lilith's effortless, graceful demeanor.

"It is rather pathetic, really," Donna responded, her tone acidic with the bitterness rising. "As if she would even understand the severity of my struggle."

Matilda leaned in closer, her voice thick with conspiratorial intent. “Remember that time she stood up at the charity event? Everyone practically fell at her feet. It’s suffocating, watching her thrive while we’re left in the shadows.”

Don't remind me," a spark of anger suddenly flared in Donna's chest, fighting the memories of Kent's affection, so easily turned to Lilith as a river changes its course. It consumed her, longing and resentment lit on fire. The warmth she once believed she could hold on to slipped from her fingers at every second Kent laughed or shared with Lilith, throwing her further into despair.

"Let's get a drink," Matilda said, her eyes circling the room with an air of determination. "Perhaps a little liquid courage can help us navigate this… display."

Together, they swam through the sea of guests, an aura of mischief surrounding Matilda as she kept her focus on the vibrant scene. The tension hummed beneath their sophistication, each step drawing them closer to temptation.

As they reached the bar, Donna's eyes swung sideways, through the crowd of people, to the sight of Finn entering the hall, dashing in his fitted suit, commanding the attention of all. A moment that should have filled her with joy instead twisted her gut. She felt the pang of longing she knew so well, threaded through with anger-anger he seemed so blissfully unaware of her plight as his gaze seemed to gravitate toward Lilith.

"Let's go talk to Finn," Donna said, her determination flared to life even as her heart sank with a realization of how easily he seemed to overlook her. Each and every chance that came my way to turn his attention away would feel like some sort of minor victory.

"Sure!" replied Matilda with the same eagerness at disrupting whatever silent admiration Finn did for Lilith. "Let's remind him what he's missing."

Approaching Finn, the two girls initiated the conversation, both flashing bright smiles. But the moment Finn turned his attention from the crowd, his eyes darting toward Lilith, Donna's heart faltered.

"Hey, Donna! Matilda!" Finn said, his smile warm yet distracted. "You both look amazing tonight!" But his gaze drifted once more, lingering on the gathering of admirers around Lilith, who shimmered with laughter and grace.

"Thanks, Finn!" Donna replied quickly, her voice just a tad above the pitch she wanted it to be. "So, what brings you in all by yourself? Shouldn't you be keeping company with Lilith or something?"

Finn laughed lightly, but there was a tinge of confusion in his eyes. "Oh, actually, I was just thinking of—

Before he could get the sentence out, Donna surged forward. "We should dance! You wouldn't want to miss out on the fun we're having here." Her tone was almost begging, desperate beneath the façade of bravado.

But before she could pull him in, Finn's gaze shifted again. "I should… I mean, I might need to talk to Lilith. She seemed a bit left out earlier," he said, his voice trailing off as he headed in her direction.

"No, wait! Finn!" Donna called out, though he didn't hear as, amidst the din in the ballroom, her heart plunged deeper into despair. She stood there visibly deflated as her chance at reclaiming his interest started slipping away. Matilda shot a glance at her-her eyebrows raised-a quiet sense of the underlying tension.

"What just happened?" Matilda asked with surprise, though a wide grin spread across her face to reveal the chaos that had unraveled. "He's headed toward her like a moth to a flame."

"Give him a moment, he'll realize what a mistake that is," Donna said, trying to regain her composure as frustration swirled within her. "He's always cared too much about what glittered instead of what mattered."

As Finn neared Lilith, she caught the hint of his approach and turned to greet him. Their eyes met, and a smile broke across her face. “Finn! I’m so glad you’re here!” she exclaimed, exuding a warmth that cast a spell over him.

"I just wanted to apologize for what happened some days ago," he began, his words sincere. "It's just that the whole place is so overwhelming and you were so busy. I didn't want to interrupt."

"Don't worry about it! I'm just happy to see you," Lilith replied, her lightness unbothered by the undercurrents of envy swirling from Donna and Matilda across the room.

Meanwhile, Donna stood, her fists clenched at her sides. "Can you believe this? Is he seriously ignoring me for her?" She felt a rush of heat, the flicker of a thousand insecurities igniting within.

"Let's do something," Matilda said, yanking Donna's attention back from the spectacle that was unfolding. "Let's cause a distraction. It's what everyone remembers—a splash, some drama!"

“Okay, but what?” Donna replied, her mind racing with possibilities. “She needs to be taken down a notch.”

“I have an idea,” Matilda hissed, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “We’ll spill something on her! Cause a scene big enough to pull all attention away from her and Finn. Make him see how ridiculous she really is!”

The energy shifted, and Donna felt both thrill and trepidation. “I’m in. Let’s show her she’s not untouchable,” she whispered fervently.

With newfound determination, they slinked closer to the bar from the side, with Matilda plotting out their impending chaos. Time slowed as they positioned themselves near Lilith, who was fully engrossed in conversation with Finn, their laughter echoing softly.

"Now!" Matilda whispered urgently as they approached. All at once, Matilda faked a trip, and the drink spiraled in a supposed perfect disaster aimed at Lilith.

"Oops!" exclaimed Donna melodramatically, raising her voice above the roar of the crowd. The liquid splattered across the sparkling gown of their target, coating the fabric with the vibrant colors of her drink-as bright as the chaos in Donna's heart.

The crowd erupted into a gasp of surprise as the attention fell on the unfolding scene. Eyes wide with wonder, whispers of disbelieving buzzed around, like a swarm of startled bees, engulfing the shocked expression of Lilith.

"What have you done?" Lilith asked, though in a moment she regained composure, looking down at the mess, her eyes blinking in disbelief. "Really, Donna?

Her tone was a mix of disbelief and disappointment, showing the tension that had been brewing beneath the surface. The world around them seemed to hold its breath, enthralled by the drama.

Finn stepped back, shock and concern crossing his face. "What just happened?" He turned quickly toward Donna, shock etched across his features as he took a step toward Lilith, whose embarrassment glimmered beneath the unforgiving spotlight.

"I was only trying to get your attention," Donna said, biting her lip to suppress the surge of anger. "Maybe if you weren't so busy playing the part of the perfect princess, you might notice a little effort from your actual friends."

"Forget it, I'm fine," Lilith replied, her voice steady though tinged with hurt. "Accidents happen; it's no big deal."

Should I get you a napkin?" Finn asked, his protective instincts kicking in as he moved closer to Lilith, concern etched in his tone.

"No, it's alright. I can handle it," she reassured with a soft smile, her gaze darting between the two girls as an unfamiliar sense of unity began to surface amidst the turmoil.

As Finn leaned protectively towards Lilith, Donna felt a hollow ache worse than before. "You can't just ignore me," she said, her voice faltering, as the waves of embarrassment washed over her. "You're so quick to her side!"

"Why are you so invested in this?" Finn finally countered, frustration now lining his voice. "I had no idea you took it that personally. I was merely being kind.”

“Yes, That's

why you ignored me and you're talking to my enemy with longing. It's truly kind.”
