CHAPTER 44
Chapter 44
The door shut behind Emmett with a finality that echoed through the empty house. Kent stood frozen in the living room, the remnants of the argument swirling in his mind like a storm. The tension hung thick in the air, and the only sound was the gentle patter of rain against the window. Yet, the silence felt deafening, amplifying the weight of Emmett's words and the revelation of his own turmoil.
Bloodier scars than I can bear," Kent mumbled to himself, feeling the sting of secrets once again reaching a suffocating status. The screams, the chaos, the darkness of that night drowned out any hint of rational thought. In his mind, he thought he was starting anew with Lilith, but Emmett had managed to peel back a layer of pretense Kent had wrapped himself in.
With a slow, heavy sigh, Kent sank onto the couch, burying his face in his hands. Part of him was relieved that Emmett had made him confront the truth, but part of him was terrified. What if Lilith looked upon him with different eyes? Would she see him as a monster, as he sometimes did himself?
Damn it," he muttered, frustration boiling inside him like a tempest. He knew he couldn't hide from his past forever, but more than anything, he feared losing her. The last thing he wanted was to hurt Lilith, just as he had hurt Emily.
A moment later, the door creaked open once more, and Kent instinctively straightened. Lilith stepped inside, shaking off a light drizzle from her coat. Her presence radiated warmth, a stark contrast to the icy grip of his thoughts. She looked up, her bright eyes catching the dim light of the room.
"Hey, sorry I'm late," she said, bright despite the gloomy weather. "I brought some dinner; I thought we might eat together."
The simplicity of the offer sent an edge of guilt through him. How could he possibly burden her with his darkness when she wanted to share a small moment of joy?
"Lilith…" he began, but he stammered. Every time he opened his mouth to explain the gravity of his situation, words seemed to fail him.
"What's wrong?" Her expression changed from excitement to concern as she placed the takeout on the coffee table, noticing the weight weighing him down.
"Nothing," Kent lied, forcing a smile that felt foreign on his face. "Just… a long day.
Your brother?" she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly.
He nodded, feeling a lump rise in his throat. "We had a rough talk."
"About?"
Another hesitation. He wanted to confide in her. He wanted to share everything, to let her in, but the history wrapped around his emotions felt suffocating. He didn't want to drag her into his darkness, but he also hated the thought of hiding things from her.
Just old stuff," he said finally, forcing his tone to remain light. "You know how brothers can be."
Lilith crossed her arms, her gaze piercing through his facade. "You're not being honest with me, Kent. I can tell when something is eating at you.
It's complicated, okay?" His voice grew sharper, frustrated with himself for not being more forthcoming. "It's just… something happened a long time ago. Something I wish I could forget."
She stepped closer, her eyes softening as she looked at him. "You know you can talk to me, right? I'm not going to judge you. I just want to understand.
Kent clenched his jaw, feeling the chasm between them widen. "It's not just about me. It's about my past and how it affects you. It's not something I can easily explain."
"Try," she urged softly. "I can't help you if you don't let me in."
Taking a deep breath, Kent ran a hand through his disheveled hair. "It's just… Emmett and I had this fight. He reminded me of things I thought I'd moved past. I'm afraid those shadows are still lurking."
"Shadows?" she repeated, tilting her head slightly. "Kent, what do you mean?
Things I've done. Choices I've made," he replied in a voice barely above a whisper. "It's not the kind of stuff that just disappears. It's like a weight, always there, every single day."
Lilith approached him, her face somber, yet gentle. "Everybody has a past, Kent. It does not dictate what you are today. You are not those mistakes you made.
But what if I hurt you with my mistakes?" he retaliated, frustration now spilling over. "What if I turn out to be what I was? The same one who caused pain?"
She slowly shook her head and stepped closer until almost no space was left between them. "I've seen you, Kent. The man you are with me isn't that man. You're trying to be better, and that's all that matters.
"That's what you think?" He searched her eyes, desperate for reassurance. "You really believe that?"
"I know it," she answered firmly. "You're not a monster. You're someone who has hurt and learned from it. And you're still learning. Just because something bad happened in the past doesn't mean it has to happen again."
Her words wrapped around him like a warm hug, but there was still doubt lingering in his mind. "What if I can't change? What if I lose control again?"
"Don't you see?" she pressed on, her voice raising a fraction. "You're not that person anymore. The Kent I know wouldn't even dream of doing something like that. You're stronger than you give yourself credit for.
What if I'm not strong enough?" he whispered, the vulnerability spilling out. "What if I let it all swallow me up?"
Lilith stepped forward, her hand finding his, grounding him in the moment. "You won't, because you're not alone. I'm here. I'll always be here. No matter what happened before, I'm not going anywhere. We can face it together.
Fear swirled within him, a tempest that threatened to pull him under. "Lilith, you don't understand! I don't want to drag you into my darkness. You deserve better than that."
"And you think hiding it will keep me safe? You're not protecting me by pushing me away," she insisted, her voice steady as an anchor amidst the chaos. "What kind of relationship is built on secrets?
He opened his mouth to argue but found himself wordless. Emotion coursed through him—fear, shame, an overwhelming love for her that weighted upon his heart.
"I don't want to lose you," he finally said, the honesty spilling freely. "I don't think I can bear the thought of hurting you the way I did her."
"Who?" she repeated, her brow furrowing in confusion.
Emily," he admitted, the name escaping his lips like a ghost breaking free. "My past.it's complicated. I did things I'm not proud of. Things I wish I could take back.
Tell me," she urged softly, squeezing his hand, her warmth piercing the cold fog of his doubts. "Whatever happened, it's okay. I want to hear it from you. I want to stand beside you, but I need you to let me in.
Kent took a deep, shaky breath, his heart racing. It was the moment he had dreaded but also longed for. The veil of secrecy was unraveling, tugging at the threads of his identity. He shifted on the couch, finding his courage among the remnants of fear.
Emmett and I had a fight because… because I was involved in something dark," he finally began, the words spilling out like a floodgate. "I made choices that led to someone's death-a death I can never undo. It still haunts me every day, making me question who I really am."
Lilith's expression remained tender, encouraging him to continue. "It's okay, Kent. You're safe. I'm here.
"I thought I was saving Emily by keeping her away from my life, from chaos," Kent explained, the emotion heavy in his quivering voice. "And the result was to bring her closer to danger. I lost her because I could not face my demons. Now, I'm terrified of doing it again with you.
Emotional trauma can play tricks on your mind, twisting your perceptions," Lilith replied in a low, even tone. "But you have to remember, Kent: you were not responsible for her death. You can't control everything, and it's not your burden alone to bear. You're here to grow, to learn, and you deserve love despite what happened in the past. And I'm here for that part of you, the part striving to be better.
A wave of emotion washed over him, awash in sorrow and gratitude. "I don't deserve you."
Stop that," she said, shaking her head vehemently. "You do deserve love. You're not a bad person for wanting it. Everyone struggles with their past, and we cannot erase our mistakes. What matters is how you choose to live now. You showed me love, kindness, how to laugh again. Those are the important parts of you. And I want to stand by your side through that.
Really?" he asked, catching her gaze, his heart racing.
"Yes, really," she assured. "Whatever darkness you think you carry, I want to help you bring light into it. I want to face your shadows and my own, because together we are strong. It's not about what happened before, but about the steps that we take now.
Slowly, Kent felt the weight of his worries begin to ease. Her words wrapped around him, tender and reassuring, like a blanket on a bitter night. "You're incredible, you know that?"
"I'm just being honest." She squeezed his hand again. "You're strong enough to open up to me. You're not your past, Kent."
In that instant, he knew she was right. He needn't be ruled by fear or regret. He could be different. He could choose to let love in.
"Thank you," he said, his voice husky with emotion. "For believing in me, even when I can't believe in myself.
"I always will." Lilith moved closer, her other hand finding his cheek, gentle on his skin. "We're in this together. You don't have to hide from me, not one part of yourself."
"I'll try," he promised, the sincerity welling from his heart. "But I cannot promise that it will be easy."
"I don't need easy," she whispered. "I just need you—your honesty, your truth."
As they stood together, the warmth between them blossomed and lit up the shadows that had threatened to swallow him whole. Kent could feel something inside him shift-a burble of hope that somehow, maybe, he'd be able to get beyond the past after all.
"I'll start by telling you everything," he said, resignation settling in. "I want you to know me, all of me."
“I’m ready,” she said, her gaze unwavering. “Wherever this journey leads us, I’m by your side.”
Through the stormy night, as the rain drummed steadily against the windows, Kent felt a sense of clarity forming—a light breaking through the darkness. The road ahead would be challenging, filled with obstacles and pain, but for the firs
t time in a long time, he felt that he wouldn’t have to face it alone.
Together, he and Lilith could face any storm.
